GAMEPLAY OVERVIEW Staff and Bones is a board game for two players which may be two individuals or two families/teams. It is a simple but strategic game which involves tactics and observation. It is played on a checkered board with 25 squares arranged in a 5 x 5 grid. At the start, each player controls four game pieces - one staff and three bones, which are identified as big bone, small bone, baby bone. The object of the game is for the player to succeed in placing their four pieces in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row. The game pieces come usually in two colour variations - black vs. white. The player who moves first is alternated during the game rounds. The game pieces can be played on any of the checkered box with one exception - The staff cannot be placed in the centre grid of the gameboard (Bone centre). The game is played by two player types - single individuals (who control all the pieces) or families/teams (who collaborate with each controlling one of the pieces). This makes the game dynamic suiting all occasions but the experiences may differ in both. Among the player types, the common rule is that the staff plays first and it's position once played is fixed. And all the bones are played one after the other before they are controlled or moved to align or unite with the staff in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal way, defending against obstruction from the opponent and attacking by obstruction to prevent the opponent from uniting first. At the start of the game, the gameboard is empty and each player gets a turn to place all game pieces before movement can take place. When played among families/teams, that is, a family against another family, a team against another team, 4 or 3 members for each player is needed. In the case of 4, the 4 pieces of the game are each controlled by one person but in the case of 3, one person controls both the staff and the big bone. While the game is played, no obvious communication among team members is allowed. We suggest that the staff should be the head of the family or the head/coach of the team. The difference between the single player type and the team player type is that In the team player type, hierarchy is observed, the big bone moves before the small bone, and the small bone moves before the baby bone. So in the team player type, there exists an Exchange move where you can exchange your position with your fellow bone, and play at his position because he is vulnerable and at that time you must play. In case the staff is played in a wrong position that defies the player's strategy, There is also a resuce move which is general for both player types, The player moves one of the bones to the staff position and afterwards moves the bone and staff together. In doing so, the other bones must remain fixed till the bone rescuing the staff moves away from the staff into another position leaving the staff fixed in it's new position. Players lose a turn during the rescue move. A score pad may be required to record wins. For an extensive and more rewarding experience, pack of 8 kingdoms is put in the game. When a player wins he chooses one of the kingdoms. The kingdoms can be played on the board, and when played, it is fixed and it's position cannot be changed - but the advantage is that the opponents staff or bones cannot be played on that box, it becomes an exclusive territory to the player who can place either of his staff or bones on top of the kingdom. The kingdoms cannot be played on the bone center. The kingdoms are - Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetrum, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, Hamate. The player to win 5 kingdoms first becomes the Game winner. In the case of a draw, the 9th game round is used as a tie breaker. The game is designed to foster unity especially when played among families, teams and groups. It also used as a tool to increase the IQ of a person as it facilitates logical and strategic thinking and as a tool for teaching the concepts of teamwork over other conventional teachings. SAMUEL C.
