MY NETWORK INSISTS ON BEING PUBLIC INSTEAD OF PRIVATE IN WINDOWS 10
I had my network set to Private (in Windows 10). I purchased a new Modem/Wi-Fi
Router. Now my PC is insisting on staying as a Public Network instead of a
Private network. Both the Modem manufacturer and my Cable provider tell me the
problem is with my Laptop.
I have researched and tried every fix I have found and none of them worked.
Does anyone know what I can do? I'm sure I have missed something, but since I
am not a Techie I need help.
Will be happy with any help I can get. Thanks.

Hi,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
I understand that the Network insists for being Public instead of Private on
Windows 10. I will certainly help you.
Method 1: Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter
There might be a problem with your network adapter, the piece of hardware that
makes it possible for your PC to connect to a network.
First, try using the Network Adapter troubleshooter to automatically find and
fix some problems. This troubleshooter will disable and re-enable the adapter
and try some other common repairs. Here's how:
1. Open Control Panel by right click on Start Button.
2. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.
3. Click Network and Internet, and run the Network Adapter troubleshooter, and
follow the instructions on your screen and check.
Method 2: Check whether Network discovery is enabled
I recommend you to check whether the Network discovery is enabled in Here's how:
1. Open Control Panel by right click on Start Button.
2. Click on Network and Sharing center.
3. Select Change advanced sharing settings option and select Private (current
profile).
4. Select the option Turn on network discovery and check the option Turn on
automatic setup of network
connected-devices under Network discovery.
5. Under Guest or Public, select the option Turn off network discovery.
6. Click on Save changes and check if the issue is resolved, if not restart the
system.

I tried both methods exactly as you explained them and neither method worked.
My network still shows as Public.

Hello,
Thank you for replying with the status of the issue.
Set your PC to Private network by following the steps below and check if the
issue is resolved.
1. Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type Settings and select the top
most search result.
2. Click on Network & Internet and select Ethernet from the left side panel of
the window.
3. Click on your network and slide the bar to On state for enabling Private
network.
4. Close the window and check if the changes are effective.

Thanks again. I ran into a problem with this one. I followed your instructions
but after I selected Ethernet I did not find my network. Instead I found a list

Try the WiFi tab instead of the Ethernet tab. I see from your picture you are
running WiFi and not Ethernet.

Once again Thanks. I tried again and this time when I clicked on Network &
Internet it automatically went to the WIFI tab. I could not a bar to slide when
I clicked on my network. I am inserting an image of what I did see. Hope this
helps. If you can think of more then I'm ready to try (though this is a bit
frustrating).

OK. I went there and the only thing I can do is set my connection to metered or
copy the properties. I went ahead and changed to a metered connection, but
doing that changed nothing.
I also checked the Manage WiFi Settings and all I can do there is Connect to
suggested open hotspots or Connect to networks shared by my contacts.
I can also pick a network to forget. Now this is weird because there are 2
networks listed and both are the same. The first is the name of my Modem and
the second is what I named my network. Could this be the problem?

Thanks, I wish it did. Instead it looks like this. I do remember seeing that
at one time and I put it as on. But that was when I set up originally. Any
other ideas? Oh, and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.
