VOTE IN OUR POLL Teachers are set to walk off the job next month as part of a dispute over pay and working conditions - but do you support the strikes? Vote in our poll to have your say. A series of national walkouts and regional strike action will start in February ( Image: Getty Images) * News * Politics * Football * Celebs * TV * Money * Royals By Freya HodgsonOnline Reporter * 11:06, 16 Jan 2023 * Updated11:30, 17 Jan 2023 * * * * * | * * 55 * Comments * | Bookmark Millions of children face online learning once again as teachers plan to go on strike next month - and we want to know what you think. The National Education Union (NEU), which has 300,000 members, announced national strikes on February 1 and March 15 and 16, as well as regional action on four other days. Around 90 percent of overworked and underpaid school staff balloted by the NEU in England backed walkouts as part of a dispute over pay and working conditions. More than 23,000 schools in England and Wales are expected to be hit by the first walkout, with heads given guidance on switching to online lessons if they haven't got enough staff to keep schools open. Teachers are furious at the Government’s 5 percent pay offer for most experienced staff, which is equivalent to a 5 percent real terms wage cut due to high inflation, says the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretaries of the National Education Union, said: "The average 5% pay rise for teachers this year is some 7% behind inflation. In the midst of a cost of living crisis, that is an unsustainable situation." Education secretary Gillian Keegan has labelled the move “deeply disappointing” and said children were still struggling to recover from the impact of the Covid pandemic on their education. Industrial action will also take its toll on parents, who will need to arrange childcare for the seven days of strikes.
