MESSAGE FROM THE RESEARCHER

"We at Gondwana see this as a wonderful synergy between technology and people
resulting in real data directing our conservation management activities. Our
EcoCamp guests love getting involved and our management team love the results!!
~ Jono Berry"

SNAPSHOT SAFARI INTRODUCTION

Snapshot Safari looks to citizen scientists from around the world to identify
wildlife caught on camera. With millions of images collected annually,
participants have the opportunity to search for wildlife in remarkable
ecosystems featuring a variety of habitats, such as the unique Karoo and Fynbos
vegetation of South Africa, the great wildebeest migration of Tanzania, and the
recovering wildlife populations of Mozambique. We are working with conservation
and research teams across Africa to use this data to ensure the protection and
proliferation of African mammals.

Once classified and validated, the camera trap data is made available for
scientific and educational purposes throughout the world. Snapshot Safari
enables researchers to closely examine questions of species coexistence,
competition, trophic interactions, and other ecological relationships across a
variety of habitat types, community compositions, and management strategies. The
results contribute to the development and refinement of important methods to
conserve some of the most beloved species and ecosystems on our planet.

Classified data and bulk image downloads for Seasons 1-11 of Snapshot Serengeti
are available through the Labeled Image Library of Alexandria (LILA). Labeled
images from six other sites (Kruger, Kgalagadi, Karoo, Mountain Zebra, Camdeboo,
and Enonkishu) are also available on LILA for download. Ecologists who wish to
access metadata and use data for publications should email
snapshotsafari@gmail.com with details about your research questions.

Images captured by Snapshot Safari are licensed under a Creative Commons
Attribution 4.0 International License. To view a copy of this license, visit

Most of the images found in the species menus come directly from our camera
traps, but occasionally we will display photos from other image databases so our
volunteers get the clearest view of an animal while classifying. You can find a
complete list of image attributions here.

Helpful Tips

 * Click on the "Snapshot Safari ->" tab at anytime to return to the main page.
 * The FAQ section is located under the "About" tab for each site
 * A note about using hashtags:

A hashtag can be a powerful tool in terms of searching for related content. Here
at Snapshot Safari, hashtags are useful to find unusual sightings and to search
for images of specific animals. Having said that, used wrongly or overly
zealously hashtags can become a nightmare. If you are not 100% sure of the
identification of an animal, then don’t hashtag.

It is not necessary to hashtag every image you flag for discussion. Try and be
selective and choose unusual images or those with some scientific relevance.
Think what might be useful to the scientists or other citizen scientists. Our
convention in Snapshot Safari is to use only a dash (-) in animal names with
several words. If you use underscore (_), those images won’t show up in the same
search. We would appreciate it if you'd use only the dash (-).

For more information, see FAQ #10.
