PROMISE

“I’m fine, let’s go.” Shen Ruolan knew that Zhang Siye was a good person, so she
happily followed him into the teahouse in front.

After being seated, Zhang Siye ordered a few refreshments and said in a
straightforward manner: “I won’t hide it from you girl, I’m the owner of the
Four Seas Restaurant. I am very interested in the two dishes that you made
today. I wonder if the girl can pass on the recipes and the method of those two
dishes to Sihai Restaurant. Of course, you needn’t do this for nothing.”

Shen Ruolan shook her head, “Siye Zhang, I am not refusing. If the boiled pork
slices are not seasoned with peppercorns, the deliciousness will be greatly
reduced. The same is true for the cumin chicken gizzards. Without cumin, it is
just a plate of ordinary fried chicken delicacy. Both peppercorns and cumin are
produced in the south. We don’t have them here. Even if I give the recipe, it’s
useless.”

Zhang Siye smiled lightly and said, “This is an unnecessary worry girl. I have a
few friends who do business in the south, I will just ask them to buy those and
bring them back.”

Hearing this, Shen Ruolan brightened and said eagerly: “You mean you can get the
seasonings from the south? Then could you ask your friends to bring back extra?
I would like some too, besides cumin and pepper, could you ask then to get some
Sichuan pepper as well, not much, just a little. I would pass the recipe of the
boiled pork slices and cumin chicken gizzards to the Sihai Restaurant free of
charge as a gift to you.”

“Sichuan pepper? What is that?” Zhang Siye was puzzled when he heard the name.

Shen Ruolan explained: “It is a kind of pepper, but it is much smaller than the
common pepper in the north and the taste is also much spicier. When it matured,
it turns red which makes the dishes both delicious and good looking!”

Zhang Siye laughed: “This is not difficult. I will ask them to help you find it
girl. It’s just that I still have one thing to ask you. If it is something rash,
I still hope the girl will answer.”

Shen Ruolan paused and said, “Sir Zhang wants to ask, how a country girl like me
can know about the seasonings produced in the south and how I can make
delicacies like boiled pork slices and cumin chicken gizzards, don’t you?”

“You are so smart girl, I admire you!” Zhang Siye praised her sincerely. At the
same time admitting indirectly that that was what he wanted to ask.

Shen Ruolan’s eyes flashed as she smiled: “Thank you for your praise. It is just
that I cannot answer your question. All you need to know is that I am a dutiful
child and that my family is innocent. I am just doing business and I will never
get into unnecessary trouble.”

Zhang Siye looked at Shen Ruolan with a bit of amazement. He didn’t expect that
she was so smart and clever that she could see the doubts that he had in his
heart and then address them. Her attitude was completely calm and relaxed and
was not like that of an ignorant and poor country girl. But rather like that of
an adult who has seen the world and lives in the center of the city.

Previously, he was just a little curious about this little girl who knew about
seasonings and could cook, but now, he couldn’t help but respect her a little as
well.

***

Sihai restaurant was located in the very center of Xinghua Street. It was a
small two storied with carved beams and traditional windows. The decoration was
both elegant and luxurious and the dishes were well known. It could be regarded
as one of the best restaurants in Nong’an County.

The customers who came here to dine were all the upper-class people in the
county and the requirements for the dishes were naturally higher than that of
the small ordinary restaurants. Therefore as the owner, Zhang Siye has to
constantly look for new dishes to cater to the tastes of the guests.

Shen Ruolan was taken to the kitchen in the back and found that it was very
large and clean and that all the dishes were well balanced. There were also side
dishes for the boiled pork slices.

Since it was just after a meal, there were not many customers in the restaurant.
Two of the four chefs were idle. Zhang Siye led Shen Ruolan inside and
introduced her to the two idle chefs. And then asked them to learn how to make
boiled pork slices and cumin chicken gizzards from Shen Ruolan.

The two chefs were well known cooks in the county. They were both famous and
highly paid. On seeing Shen Ruolan’s skinny and ragged appearance, they despised
her from the bottom of their heart. Such a yellow haired girl will definitely
not have enough to ear at home. How is it possible for her to cook something
new?

They didn’t know what was going on with their boss or what they did wrong, that
they were punished like this.

They did not say anything, but their attitude towards her was not very good and
said it all, one sneered at her with a furrowed brow, while the other looked on.
It didn’t seem like they were learning to cook dishes from her, but rather like
they were watching the excitement from the side.

Shen Ruolan saw the contempt and disdain of these two people, but she was here
to do business, not to pick a fight with others. She has made friends with Zhang
Siye and it was not worth her time to get angry with a few worthless people.

After washing her hands, she began to select the ingredients quickly, cutting
the meat, boiling the water, adding rice wine (there was no cooking wine in this
world but rice wine could be used instead), soy sauce, pepper, noodles,
marinated starch and a dash of soy oil to prevent the clumping and sticking
together.

While she was doing this, she first chose to ignore the arrogant attitude of the
two fat cooks, just concentrate on doing things, while talking at the same time.
The two chefs looked down on her at first, but after observing her simple and
neat style as well as her skilled knife work, their attitude became much better
than before instead of being perfunctory and condescending.

The two dishes were completely mastered in less than an hour, under Shen
Ruolan’s careful guidance. The boiled pork slices with red pepper, mushrooms,
bean sprouts, tenderloin slices with a few green vegetables floating on top, the
color alone was enough to induce appetite, the only fly in the ointment was that
the peppercorns used in the boiled pork slices were replaced with regular
peppers. Although this affected the taste, it was still delicious.

The cumin chicken gizzards were replaced with sesame chicken gizzards. Although
they were not as delicious as the authentic ones, they also tasted different.
Both of them should be popular for a while after they are promoted.

After she finished teaching them, the two chefs who benefited well sent her off
politely, with the contempt on their faces long replaced with admiration.

When she came out, Zhang Siye had already left and a kid who was dressed up as a
waiter came forwards and said respectfully: “Girl, our boss has already left.
But before that he said that since you didn’t have any meals at noon that a room
with lunch should be prepared in the second floor. I have already prepared the
same, please eat right away and I will send you back when you are done. He also
explained that the north and south are quite far apart. The things that you
ordered with him won’t be here for a while, so please don’t worry. When those
things do arrive, he will immediately send them to you immediately.”

Zhang Siye was so kind and caring and Shen Ruolan was a little touched. To be
honest, she was quite hungry after cooking so long. Although there were dim sums
in the tea house, she was brought here before she could try them. When the two
cook were taught to cook, they had a bite or two to check the seasonings when
the dishes were just done. It was still not enough to feel full. So when she
heard there was something to eat, her stomach rumbled like someone was groaning.

Shen Ruolan smiled and said: “Then I will not be polite, so I will trouble you
brother, to thank Zhang Siye for me.

CHAPTER 4.1

Reply

The employees did not know what to do with a newborn child. It also wasn’t the
right moment to ask the Archduke about it. Meryl had also been pregnant at the
time when they were searching to get a nanny as soon as possible. She was on a
long leave to have her child. By the time she had finished her leave and came
back, her lady, the duchess Rachel had died and the baby, who knew nothing, was
crying until she was breathless.

Meryl, who saw everyone washing their hands off the child, got angry and left
the duchy with the crying baby in her arms. That was how Meryl became Audria’s
nanny. The death of Rachel, his everything caused the Duke to lock the gates of
the Duchy for more than a year, as he fell apart in his grief.

In the meantime, Audria grew up in the hands of Nanny Meryl, like a pile of
ashes that was forgotten by everyone. Ever since Rachel died, the Duke has
become dead inside. He was like a bird of prey that wanted to hunt with bated
breath during the harsh winter that could freeze everything.

Later when the buds bloomed and the animals came out of hibernation, he still
remained frozen. It was just natural that as Audria grew up, she grew to be
timid and flinched at everything. The interior of the mansion was so austere and
the young child had no choice but to look at it.

From the moment that Audria learnt that Rachel had died while giving birth to
her, she considered that everything to be her fault. She even thought that it
was wrong that she was born or that she should have died instead.

As time went by, Audria withered more and more and soon was unable to come out
of her room and preferred to stay in it. Although she was still young and was
not at the age to debut in society, in the aristocracy, where everyone valued
the connections from childhood, children of the same age moved back and forth
from each other’s families to hang out with each other.

However, Audria had no friends like that. This was what she had heard about the
Duke’s youngest daughter Audria Trudy in her previous life. She still didn’t
know how and why she came into this body.

According to Meryl and Yella, Audria did not come out of the bed like every
other day, that day.  Because there were many such days, Meryl and Yella didn’t
consider it strange. However Audria remained in the bed from morning till
evening.

It was only when Meryl approached Audria to make her have her meal that she
found that things were strange. The room was cold and different, so Meryl had
lifted the quilt even though she knew that it was disrespectful. And found two
pillows placed vertically sided by side instead of Audria who should have been
there.

Soon, there was a frenzy to find Audria and shortly afterwards she was found.
Audria had collapsed under the fence after she had escaped from her room. After
this, Audria suffered from high fever and did not wake up. Until the moment that
‘she’ opened her eyes instead. At that moment, a hypothesis came into her head.

‘Audria Trudy was dead’. It was possible that she stopped breathing when she
was suffering from high fever. And at the same time, she died and entered into
her body instead.

And then she wondered ‘Then what about me? I wonder what happened to my body.’

Then maybe after she fell off a cliff, her body was drifting somewhere in the
sea, hung on a rock or a branch, slowly decaying as it was and becoming the prey
of beast or was found by someone else instead.

Either way, she couldn’t confirm things right then. After waking up from a high
fever, if she suddenly wanted to find about a merchant who had the same name as
her but no other connection whatsoever, it would be strange and surprising for
everyone.

First of all, she needed to adapt to this body. From a poor and working class
merchant, she had to become Audria Trudy, the abandoned daughter of the Duke,
who believed that she was the cause of all misery.

After thinking of these things, she sighed. What Audria was hoping for wasn’t a
wealthy family. She felt that it was good to be poor. The life she wanted to
live was a contented life with her beloved family in a warm home.

However, though the world gave her the opportunity to live once again, it did
not give her the opportunity to live happily with a family.

She had to live abandoned by her family again. This fact was quite dreary.
Except for the fact that she was the daughter of Duke Trudy, Audria’s situation
was not very good.

Though she was born as a child of the Duke, she was thrown away due to
resentment and had never got everyone’s attention and care. And then she
isolated herself in her room. In such a bad situation, Audria had to adapt to
her new body and her circumstances where all the information she knew was based
on hearsay and rumor.

She doubted that there was anything that she could do with her body. Until then,
she had always stayed in her room and talked very little. It was said that she
was talkative if she spoke more than one sentence a day. What could she do as
such an Audria Trudy?

In retrospect…. The first time that she opened her eyes, it was really strange
that she was unable to talk. Now she realized that it was because, she had not
spoken for a long time before she had gotten sick, which had caused her throat
to become blocked.

She spent some time thinking about the Audria Trudy who became more silent with
each passing day. The more that she thought about it, the more that she felt
that it didn’t make sense. She couldn’t wait to see whether she could do it? She
thought that she has to somehow do it.

CHAPTER 1.1

Posted on August 12, 2021 by perfectships
Reply

t was midsummer, the sun was shining brightly and the cicadas buzzed.

The queen had arranged for a banquet in the royal gardens, situated in the
western suburbs of the capital and every lady in the capital came to enjoy the
flowers.

It was even rumored that the Queen Mother wanted to choose the princess for her
youngest son Zhao Wang.

In Xuanyu pavilion the actors danced brandishing their sleeves, while singing
‘Rouge fan’.

Sheng Xiyan leant against the railing, swishing the sherbet in her cup
indifferently. In the amber of the fruit juice, her beautiful face was reflected
faintly.

The eyebrows are picturesque, with peachy cheeks and snow white skin.

This was her in the prime of her life.

However, after today, she will be like a flash in the pan, withering completely
just when she should have blossomed most beautifully.

Sheng Xiyan’s eyes dimmed and she put down the glass cup, straightened her
skirt, got up and walked out of the Xuanyu Pavilion.

‘Rouge fan’ has been performed quite a few times and there have long been some
ladies who couldn’t sit still; who came out to take a breather, admire the
flowers and play, in the garden full of colorful flowers, filled with the
singing of birds.

In her previous life, she had obediently kept to her seat and never left it from
the beginning till the end.

Until the Queen Mother’s decree fell like a bolt from the clear blue sky.

The decree allowed both her and her cousin Zhao Yuanrou to be married to Zhou
Jingxun, the Hou Shizi of Yongning at the same time.

The marriage contract between her and Yongning Hou Shizi was made when she was a
child. The three books and six ceremonies were halfway through. The marriage
date was fixed about a month ago and now she was just waiting for the marriage
to take place and receive her marriage certificate.

Zhao Yuanrou is the only daughter of her aunt, who was the cousin of her
stepmother and is only two months younger than her.

The customs of the previous dynasty still prevailed in this one; even though
this dynasty has been around for a hundred years and the previous one has long
been abolished.

She never understood why the Queen Mother made such a decree, but she had to be
obedient and was unable to resist. In the end, she had to marry into the
Yongning house on the same day as Zhao Yuanrou.

She hadn’t known until after her marriage that Zhou Jingxun was displeased about
the marriage contract with her. And that he had appealed to his elders several
times to dissolve the marriage contract. In the end, he had jumped into the lake
with Zhao Yuanrou to die.

The queen mother was moved by their affection and decided to fulfill their
desire.

Sheng Xiyan tucked her wind-blown hair behind her ears; with a faint smile on
her lips that didn’t reach her eyes.

Whether it was regarding the marriage contract or to be married as a concubine,
she did not have any right to alter anything in her previous life.

Her wedding in the previous life was a big joke. And she had sat alone in the
new house all night. The very next day, she was declared ‘seriously ill’ and was
never able to leave the yard again.

What was even more ironic was that after she died of an actual illness, she
learnt that her life was actually nothing more than a novel; and the
protagonists of the novel are her fiancé Zhou Jingxun and his white moonlight
Zhao Yuanrou.

The two are happy and were inseparable in love and she was just a vicious female
character who frustrated them while she was alive.

Because of her existence, the two of them went through various misunderstandings
and quarrels each and every time but because of their love they were inseparable
even in the face of danger. Every misunderstanding just made them love each
other more.

In the end, her ‘death due to illness’ helped them accomplish their deep
feelings. Zhou Jingxun also became the most powerful minister of his era in this
great dynasty with the help and support of Zhao Yuanrou. Their deep and abiding
love made a great story.

It was much more ‘interesting’ than ‘Rouge Fan’.

But in this life, Sheng Xiyan doesn’t want to be the vicious female character!

Shen Xiyan walked leisurely. Suheyuan was just in front of her. She took out her
kerchief and wiped her slender white fingers. Some white powder fell from the
cloth and scattered into the grass.

Then she turned towards Mingyue Lake; it was where the two of them tried to die
in the previous life.

The location of Mingyue Lake is a bit special. Bypassing Mingyue Lake was the
Suheyuan garden, making it the best place lotus in the summer and going back
from where she stood is the Xuanyu Pavilion where the theater was being
performed. Originally this Mingyue Lake should have a lot of visitors, but
because there was a more scenic shortcut from Xuanyu Pavilion to the Suheyuan
garden, there are fewer visitors on weekdays.

In her previous life, Shen Xiyan heard that it was an imperial eunuch who found
them that day and ensured that they lived.

The surface of Mingyue Lake was sparkling in the sunlight. From a distance, she
could see two people talking by the lake. They were standing with their backs to
her, their position very intimate.

It seems she got there just in time!

Sheng Xiyan didn’t know the exact time that they tried committing suicide; she
only came out of the Xuanyu Pavilion shortly after seeing Zhao Yuanrou leave.

This way, the closer Sheng Xiyan was to Mingyue Lake, the easier was it for her
to avoid being seen. As she was walking she had paid attention to suitable
hiding places around her. Now she just turned and hid smoothly behind an
outcropping of rocks at the closest possible distance. From where, she could
hear the happenings near Mingyue lake very clearly.

As soon as she stood still, a voice reached her ears.

“Rou’er”

Sheng Xiyan raised her eyebrows, feeling quite surprised. This wasn’t Zhou
Jingxun’s voice! Why was it the wrong one?

“Lord.” This voice on the other hand was the right one. Zhao Yuanrou’s voice was
always like this, otherworldly with a unique coolness.

“…Rou’er, please believe me, I have already asked my mother for permission to
marry you as my wife.”

“Prince.” Zhao Yuanrou sighed softly, “Why are you like this? I just see you as
a friend. You are a dignified prince with a distinguished status. We don’t make
a good match even though you are a good man.”

CHAPTER 3.2

Posted on June 9, 2021 by perfectships
1

She realized that she had died. But she was confused about what happened in
between the time that she was dead, till the time she was now alive again, in
another person’s body. Besides which, even the name was the same.

When she was forced to admit the fact that she had become Audria Trudy, she
recalled what happened to her, her face crumpled on its own. If all that she
knows about Audria Trudy was true, then she has just survived the death of this
character.

She just had no luck whatsoever. She knew all about Audria Trudy. She was in a
business that catered to the nobility. And there was not one person among the
nobles that she did not know about, both in the capital and the empire. So she
had heard all about Audria Trudy.

As well as about Duke Trudy, the only one who could compete against or surpass
the Imperial family in the empire. And about his one and only heir. If her
memory served her well, this was the year that Audria Trudy died.

There were very few people, who had seen her in person, because she rarely went
outside, so there was not much accurate information about her, but what others
built upon and talked about.

At first glance, Audria Trudy, seemed to have been born with everything from the
time she was born; but in reality, she was an abandoned child of the duke. She
had become that Audria Trudy. She still couldn’t believe it, no matter how many
times she thought about it. But at the same time, she couldn’t deny it.

This fact made Audria’s face crumple. ‘So where was her body?’

Audria did not die. But she also died long ago. Stupid and unlucky Audria, who
died in the end after sacrificing everything for her siblings. But she lived for
some reason. She had also become the youngest daughter of Duke Trudy, the head
of the best family in the empire.

Having the blood of the Archduke Trudy running through your veins is the same as
being born bedecked and dripping with diamonds. So, Audria Trudy should be the
happiest person and the object of envy for everyone.

But unfortunately that was not the case. She was turned out from her family from
birth and didn’t even come out of her room for the rest of her life. So when the
noblewomen talked about her, they always clucked their tongues as they said
“That child is so pitiful.”

Audria Trudy became an object of sympathy despite being a part of the duchy of
Trudy, which was a subject of awe and fear for everyone. But among all this,
there was a person who received admiration and envy, instead of fear from
everyone and that was the late Duchess Rachel Trudy who had passed away.

Ironically, her presence, which Rachel Trudy had prayed for, was the beginning
of the tragedy of Audria Trudy.

Unlike his publicly known image, which was what everyone else knew, the Archduke
Trudy was very much harmonious in his family. Though outwardly he had always
been plain-spoken, with a very good poker face and a very difficult person to
get along with in general.

But when he was with his wife, he was full of laughter. He always called his
wife Rachel’s name sweetly as if her name was overflowing with honey. It was
unbelievable that such a sweet sound could come from the normally low and cold
voice of the Archduke Trudy.

But unfortunately, Rachel Trudy wasn’t healthy. Her body was weak from childhood
and could catch cold at the slightest chill and then she would not be able to
get out of bed for more than a fortnight. When she was pregnant the first time,
the Archduke was more worried and scared than happy.

What if she couldn’t hold on and die while trying to have a child? Duke Trudy
left everything behind and was beside Rachel’s for the entire duration of her
pregnancy, all the way till her delivery. Thanks to his devotion, she was
healthy and gave birth to Jeremiah Trudy.

So he relaxed his vigilance. When he heard that she was pregnant with their
second child, he believed that if he took care of her the same way, by staying
by her side all the time, just like he did when she was having Jeremiah that she
would be fine.

However, as time passed, her condition only grew worse with each passing day and
in the end she was unable to recover from the exhaustion of giving birth to
Audria. So the Archduke and Jeremiah had to lose their beloved wife and mother.

Although her body was weak, she was tough with great mental strength. She always
ignored tacit rules that existed among the nobility and made all her decisions
on her own based on what felt right to her heart.

When they had a child, the nobles were different from others in that, within 100
days after the birth, the child was left wholly to the nanny.

But Rachel didn’t. She raised Jeremy on her own, until he could do most of the
things by himself. How much trouble did the Archduke Trudy and Rachel have
before they named their child Jeremiah? Among the numerous choices that she had,
that was the name which was chosen by her.

Rachel experienced everything as a mother who raised her own child. The joy of
the first time a child calls mom and dad, the first time a child turned over,
the first step that was taken and everything was a happy miracle.

From the time that Jeremiah first started talking; Rachel taught him everything
that he needed to know, starting from his letters. Rachel loved Jeremiah with
everything that she had. The archduke and Jeremy had great affection for her in
return.

When they lost her, their loss was too awful and great to bear. It was like they
had lost their whole world. Archduke Trudy felt helpless and couldn’t do
anything. The problem was that while both of them were suffering under Rachel’s
loss, there was no one to take care of Audria, who had just been born.

CHAPTER 4.1

1

The area was sparsely populated and there was a shop in the distance with its
door ajar and the sounds of laughter and the playing of mahjong come out from
time to time. There was also the sound of one or two dogs barking.

Jiang Yu hesitantly watched the young man from a distance, not daring to go any
closer.

Qiu Li turned over and laid on his back and saw a clear and bright crescent moon
outlined in the dark blue night sky.

He doesn’t remember how many years it has been since he saw such a clear and
bright crescent moon.

Qiu Li lay there for a while and then slowly got on to his knees.

His figure was long, thin and bleak and his half-sleeved T-shirt is already
covered with mud and blood till he couldn’t even see its original color.

It felt very depressing for Jiang Yu.

He walked slowly towards the end of the road and it seemed as if he didn’t feel
any of the injuries on his body.

At first, Jiang Yu thought that he would go to the hospital, so she followed
behind him and didn’t dare to get too close. She still felt embarrassed in her
heart.

He was a murderer!

She remembered the news that said he had a strong anti-social personality.

Moreover, he was extremely dangerous because he was an expert in mental
hypnotism. At that time, the police hired the best psychiatric expert in the
country to diagnose him and the expert almost got his personal details cheated
out of him instead.

Of course, this was all the gossips that Jiang Yu saw on the internet, which she
didn’t know was true or not.

Therefore, even if she accepted the [Save the Demon Boy] task, Jiang Yu was
going to maintain a safe distance from him, until she was certain about young
Qiu Li’s risk factor.

Being reborn was not easy and she must cherish this life.

Jiang Yu kept a distance of twenty meters as she followed Qiu Li as she saw him
cross the road, walk into the Family Mart convenience store and buy an ice
cream.

The convenience store clerk was shocked by Qiu Li’s bloody face. Seeing that the
clerk didn’t respond for a long time, he threw down a bloody five Yuan before he
turned about and walked out of the convenience store.

He removed the wrapper and threw it into the trash can. While eating the ice
cream, he continued to walk forward.

Jiang Yu continued to sneak behind him as she walked towards Binjiang Road.

On the other side of the road, Qiu Li climbed over the guardrail and onto the
dam by the river.

A strong gust of wind blew; he turned sideways, put out his hands to balance as
he walked a few steps on the narrow dam.

Don’t his injuries hurt!

Qiu Li suddenly turned his head and glanced back at her.

He had deep eye sockets, peach blossom eyes and his dark eyes were endless like
an abyss.

He and Jiang Yu looked directly at each other and for a moment she felt like
there was a force like a whirlpool, in his eyes, as if he wanted to suck her
deeply into his eyes.

Qiu Li suddenly had a sneer at the corner of his mouth and then jumped into the
river.

Jiang Yu was stunned by what happened in front of her eyes.

‘This… what sort of thing was this!”

She didn’t think much about it, quickly climbed over the railing, jumped and
then climbed up the dam.

The financial center on the opposite side was shining bright with lights, the
river was rippling and a teenager appeared and disappeared from time to time in
the river.

“Help!” Jiang Yu tried calling for help from all the directions, “Someone has
fallen into the water!”

However, except for the vehicles that were speeding on the road, the surrounding
area was deserted and there were no other people around.

Since a life was at stake, Jiang Yu no longer hesitated, took off her shoes and
jumped into the river.

Qiu Li swam along the turbulent river for a while and then naturally floated up.

He raised his head, but saw that the girl in the white dress who had been
following him; had jumped into the water.

As soon as she jumped in, she sank, struggling desperately for a while and then
there was no movement.

“…”

Qiu Li swam against the current towards her, quickly caught her, lifted her body
and swam towards the river bank.

Qiu Li dragged her to the shore. The girl was soaked and unconscious and she did
not awaken.

Qiu Li patted her on the face; she shouldn’t be dead so soon!

Since she couldn’t have died, he didn’t bother to care about her, so he got up
and left.

After climbing up the dam, he glanced back.

Under the cold moonlight, the girl lay alone on the grassy shore.

The white skirt was soaked and clung to her body outlining her body clearly.

Qiu Li walked a few more steps and then stopped and cursed in a low voice:
“Fuck!”

***

Jiang Yu’s consciousness was chaotic and she felt a pair of cold palms pressing
on her chest. Fuck the force was so hard that she almost felt that her ribs were
about to collapse.

Immediately afterwards, her nose was pinched and her mouth was pried open…

Jiang Yu struggled to wake herself up and saw the handsome face of Qiu Li,
dripping with blood, very close to hers.

The lips were about to touch and the mouth had a fishy and salty taste.

Jiang Yu’s eyes widened suddenly, her brain booted with a ‘boom’ and she
subconsciously raised her hand and slapped him.

She beat Qiu Li

Jiang Yu scuttled back bit by bit as she covered her lips with her hand, looking
at him nervously as she choked on the water.

She just realized that he was just giving her artificial respiration right then
and she felt a little guilty for overreacting.

“Hey, are you okay.” She asked after there was a bit of distance between them

Qiu Li didn’t answer, touched his face and a trace of surprise passed through
his dark eyes.

After coming out of his nightmare of a childhood, for so many years, his
neuro-sensory system has become more and more numb due to emotional disarray.

There was no taste while eating, no sense of smell and not even any sense of
‘arousal’; even if he was beaten all over, his pain perception was not there.

Everything in this world makes him feel unreal.

He is crazy enough to crave gluttony, wants to get addicted to sweetness, tried
getting professional help, tried provoking people…. He somehow wanted to find
the truth of the senses and wanted to feel alive.

However, it did not happen.

Until the girl’s slap fell on his face and gave rise to a sharp burst of pain.

It let him feel…. The truth of being alive.

He leant close to her again, catching her eyes, with a sneer at the corner of
his mouth: “Dare to hit me?”

Jiang Yu was so scared that she looked at him in horror as she shook her head.

The feeling of being stared at by a crazy psychopath was too uncomfortable!

“Try hitting me again.” Qiu Li turned and showed her the other side of his face,
as he asked in a very sincere tone: “Come on, hit me again.”

Jiang Yu took a step back: “No….no.” Her hand hurts.

Qiu Li’s black eyes, which seemed to be able to see through people’s hearts at a
glance, took a passing glance at her and saw the fear in her eyes.

The tip of his tongue touched his palate and then he laughed.

TWO TAELS OF SILVER

Shen Ruolan couldn’t help but worry about handing over the food to them. If
those two people make even a little bit of trouble behind her back, wouldn’t she
be finished?

Ignoring the shopkeeper Li who was enthusiastically inviting her to drink tea,
she followed the two men into the back kitchen, rushing up to personally heat
the dishes and then bring it out by herself, thereby preventing them from having
any opportunity to sabotage things.

After the boiled pork slices were re-heated, a strong fragrance immediately
wafted and the fragrance drifted from the kitchen to the shop in an instant,
making the whole shop fragrant.

It was a much different smell from the usual boiled meat and stew and a smell
that made one’s fingers twitch for a pair of chopsticks, while inducing their
appetite.

Shopkeeper Li also smelled the alluring scent and his face was a bit
complicated. Although he still maintained the smile on his face, the smile was
as fake as it could get as if it was carved from wood.

Zhang Siye’s eyes lit up as he smiled after sniffing the aroma: “It seems that
this little girl really knows to cook with those two seasonings. I am really
blessed to try these two dishes today!” After that, he picked up a pair of
chopsticks and put a slice of boiled pork into his mouth.

Shen Ruolan kept staring at him, observing his expression, with her heart in her
throat, afraid that he would say something bad.

Fortunately, Zhang Siye didn’t say anything bad, but neither did he speak. After
taking a bite of the boiled pork slices, he took another pair of chopsticks to
try the cumin chicken gizzards.

In this way, he took one bite of boiled pork slices followed by one bite of the
cumin chicken gizzards and put down the chopsticks only after eating most of the
two bowls of the dishes.

“Siye Zhang how is it?” asked Shopkeeper Li, who looked even more nervous than
Shen Ruolan.

“Ah. It’s very good!”

Zhang Siye took out a clean veil, wiped his mouth and then made this pertinent
evaluation.

Shen Ruolan breathed a sigh of relief. The knife that was hanging over her head
fell to the ground. She opened her mouth, as she turned to shopkeeper Li with a
smile, “Siye Zhang said that it was delicious. You can try it too. Take a look
at these two dishes; aren’t these dishes made with these seasonings good?”

Her smile was warm and confident. Shopkeeper Li’s face was not very good. In
fact, as soon as the boiled pork slices had come out, with its tempting
fragrance and the fact that Zhang Siye had eaten several mouthfuls in a row one
after another, he knew that those two dishes were delicious.

Under Zhang Siye’s gaze, he reluctantly tasted a few mouthfuls and found that
these two dishes were really delicious. They were so delicious, with nothing
wrong with them, that he felt even more depressed.

“Shopkeeper Li, how is it? Is my food good or not?” Shen Ruolan ignored his
gloomy expression as she asked with a smile.

“Uh…Hehe, Fortunately this meat and chicken gizzards are delicious, or can they
be delicious without these two things.” The shopkeeper Li blamed the taste Shen
Ruolan’s cuisine on the ingredients. This, this was the rhythm of wanting to
withdraw.

Shen Ruolan laughed with a ‘puchi’ as she said, “It seems that Shopkeeper Li is
going to cheat and go back on his gentleman’s promise. It seems that I have not
made a deal with a gentleman today.”

“Hey little girl, what do you mean by that? Are you saying that I’m not a
gentleman?” Shopkeeper Li was blushing as he argued, looking embarrassed due to
her smile, “I’m not denying anything, I’m just telling the truth. There is no
meat and chicken available all the time. Your ingredients are also delicious. If
you can use your two seasonings to cook Chinese cabbage and carrots then the
silver will be yours!”

Shen Ruolan sneered and said: “These two seasonings are usually used to cook
meat. Wouldn’t it be difficult for me to use them to cook cabbages and carrots?
Besides, compared to ordinary stewed meat, what is the taste of my boiled pork
slices? The difference between the two cannot be mistaken by Shopkeeper Li! And
there is also the taste of the cumin chicken gizzards. Do you think that regular
fried chicken gizzards be as delicious as my cumin flavored one?”

“No, absolutely not!” Zhang Siye, who had been silent, said suddenly.

Shen Ruolan was overjoyed; Siye Zhang was trying to help her!

Zhang Siye glanced at the shopkeeper Li, before he turned to Shen Ruolan and
said: “Little girl, I think that your seasonings are very good. Without these
two seasonings, these two dishes will never be this delicious. I don’t know
about your methods, but these two seasonings, no matter how much you have, I
want it.”

Shen Ruolan didn’t answer Zhang Siye, but instead asked with curved eyes: “So,
Zhang Siye, the middleman, admits that I have won?”

Zhang Siye nodded: “Exactly!”

Shen Ruolan blinked and then smiled as she asked shopkeeper Li: “Shopkeeper Li,
Siye Zhang said that I won. What do you think?”

Shopkeeper Li’s mouth twitched. He didn’t dare to offend Zhang Siye. If he
didn’t honor his bet today, Zhang Siye would definitely despise his character
and would not continue to do business with him. He was flustered and could now
feel the difference after the loss of two taels of silver from the profit of the
four or five taels of silver that he had been anticipating.

Furthermore, what Zhang Siye had just said reminded him that the two seasonings
brought by this little girl were indeed very good. If he could buy out those two
seasonings, his future income would definitely be more than two taels of silver.

Thinking of it like this he reassured himself and smiled: “Since Zhang Siye has
spoken, I am naturally willing to give in.”

This was obviously said to please Zhang Siye.

After shopkeeper Li finished talking, he bent down and took out a conspicuous
red leather box from under the counter. After opening it with a key, he took out
a small silver ingot from the bottom drawer and handed it to Shen Ruolan.

“Girl, please take it. It was I who lost to the girl.” Although he was still a
bit ambiguous about the two dishes made by the girl, he is not the kind of man
who doesn’t admit defeat. “If the girl gets to know me better in the future, you
will know what kind of person I am.”

“Hehe, since shopkeeper Li is so sincere, then I won’t be polite.”

Shen Ruolan took the silver, though her words were polite, she didn’t want to
have any more dealings with this old fox, the old guy was a crook, slippery and
opportunistic and there was absolutely no way that she was going to have a good
relationship with him. The fourth master was here and she mostly got her two
taels of silver because shopkeeper Li wanted to use her in the future.

After she received the money, she brought up the topic that was discussed just
now: “Siye Zhang, I got those two seasonings by accident. I don’t have any stock
left in my hands. I’m afraid that I will have to disappoint you.”

Zhang Siye smiled faintly, without showing much disappointment on his face, as
he slightly nodded and said, “That’s okay.”

But shopkeeper Li, on the other hand, when he heard that Shen Ruolan did not
have those two seasoning in stock, his face dropped with disappointment while a
little regret showed along with the disappointment at the same time. Perhaps he
regretted giving Shen Ruolan the silver so quickly.

Shen Ruolan didn’t care about what he thought. After explaining, she took her
leave and left with the basket.

She planned to go on a shopping spree. There are too many things that she needs
at home; things like a bathtub, cotton clothes, cotton, rice, noodles seasonings
and so on. These things need to be purchased.  She now has the money to buy as
much as she wants.

However, she didn’t go very far and suddenly she heard someone calling her from
the back: “Girl, please wait.”

Shen Ruolan stopped and when she turned around saw that Zhang Siye had come out
of the condiment shop and was walking towards her.

“Siye Zhang, you called me for something?”

Zhang Siye approached and then stopped in front of her. “It’s just something, I
don’t know if it is convenient for the girl now? If it is convenient, please
move to the tea house in front of us to talk!”

Selena stared blankly at the arrow. “I obviously just aimed and shot at the
bull’s-eye….” She murmured.

It seems that she had no talent whatsoever in archery.

Well that was okay. As they say, a genius in one field can be a hopeless mess in
another. Selena gave a jerk and lowered her bow, as she said: “I think that I
need to practice a lot. I will practice more thoroughly from tomorrow.”

The instructor shook his head and said, “Before that,” he pointed his hand
towards the place where the arrow had flown, “Pick it up.”

“…Yes?”

“Pick it up.”

‘God damn it’ Selena rubbed her forehead

“You have to be back in five minutes and continue practicing!”

Selena found this to be greatly humiliating. She bit her teeth and broke into a
run.

***

“Even if you shoot, do you have to shoot so far away…?” Selena scowled as she
scratched her back, as she dug out the arrows.

Somehow, she felt that things have been twisted since the first day. And it was
very troublesome to go to two classes every day.

She was not actually scared of getting married or going to a matchmaker’s
meeting. Though she did not have much experience with dating in her previous
life, she was still able to hold her own for a long time.

However…  If she grabbed attention in any way…. She didn’t like it. Nor was it a
situation that she wanted to imagine. If she made a single mistake and it was
found out that she was a woman…

Selena patted her chest down and saw that it was still flat.

No matter how identical she was to Celestine, she couldn’t avoid having the
skeletal structure of her gender. She was a woman in military uniform.

Though no one looked closely at her right now, no one can predict what could
happen in the future.

She should avoid being noticeable as much as possible. It was essential that no
one ever found out that she wasn’t her brother.

‘It just meant that the basic average should be maintained.’

Selena gave a long sigh, ‘Celestine, just come back. I will give you a
concussion.’

“Where did the arrow go again?” She was sure that it had fallen at the back of
the training field, where the grass grew lushly. Finding an arrow in such a
place was like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Selena looked around nervously, ruffling her hair.

Just then, not so far away there was a glint of an arrowhead.  She walked
quickly towards it.

“I couldn’t find it because of where I was standing…” But she couldn’t finish
her statement. Because, Ignis was standing right in front of the place, where
the arrow was stuck.

Selena could only blink without saying anything. Because he was the last person
she wanted to encounter.

“You….” The man narrowed his eyes. He seemed to be observing Selena’s face,
“Celestine Evans, right?”

Ignis, the person she never ever wanted to face, was standing right in front of
her.

‘Why?…..Why?… Didn’t I make a pledge just an hour ago to never face him?’ Selena
thought with frustration.

Didn’t she keep an eye out so that she would never meet this man and stand out
in his eyes?

But what was this situation. This was a classic example of when things can go
wrong, they will definitely go wrong. She thought that perhaps her horoscope
today had the worst fortune.

“Sir Celestine Evans. That is your name correct?” Ignis smiled as he held his
hand out for a handshake, as if he cared whether he got her name correct or not.

Selena shuddered as she quickly nodded.

It was awkward. She was reminded of the etiquette rule which said that you
should never make eye contact without permission, when you face a member of the
Imperial family.

Even in this situation, the fact that she was worried about etiquette made her
give out a self-deprecating laugh.

“Yes, I am honored to meet you, your majesty.” Selena shook Ignis’ hand

“How do you know me?” Ignis asked in a surprised tone.

Selena flinched and quickly let go of his hand “Uh….. Three years ago, I saw you
for the first time from a distance, when you returned victoriously from the
battle with the Penoc Kingdom.”

Of course, it was all a lie. Selena silently rolled her eyes and said “Your
majesty’s appearance was so outstanding when you entered in the parade. How
could I forget it?”

It can be said that everything that came out of her mouth was to overcome this
situation as fast as possible. Selena gulped, suppressing her nervousness.

“Haha, though you don’t look like it, you’re really good at making jokes. Raise
your head.”

“…Yes? Even if I look up, I don’t think that I should look at your majesty’s
face.” Though Selena was reluctant to do so, she could not help but raise her
head.

And squarely met Ignis’ eyes in front of her. Ignis, when seen up close, had a
much more striking appearance than she had imagined.

His large, red eyes with long lashes were sharp but moist at the same time and
the raised nose was smooth enough to draw a curved line over it.

His red lips that contrasted with his white skin felt seductive along with his
fluffy silver hair all of the combined so beautifully together and made him look
perfect.

“She’s really fine. In fact, her strength seems to have improved a lot more than
what it was before.”

“Has it really?” Mrs. Meryl asked again and again as if she could not be
relieved even after the doctor’s assurance.

“Yes, just give her very nutritious meals and plenty of rest.” Mrs. Meryl and
Yella were relieved only after the doctor’s visit was over. Audria however was
very curious about what was happening from the time that she regained her
consciousness.

“Thank God that you are alright my Lady.” Mrs. Meryl smiled reassuringly at
Audria. As if her well-being was the most important thing for her. It was this
thing that Audria was most curious about- people who she was seeing for the
first time calling her as a ‘Lady’.

She was just a normal girl; she wanted to ask why they were calling her a lady.
But the moment she opened her mouth, nothing came out.

Like a person who has never talked before, her voice when it came out caused a
lot of discomfort as if someone was scrapping the inside of her throat. The
voice that did come out did not seem to be hers at all.

“Who…you…please?”

“My lady….. Don’t you remember me?” the woman named Meryl looked increasingly
worried “I am Meryl, your nanny.”

“Nanny…..?

“Yes. My God! You can’t remember?”

Of course she could not remember a woman named Meryl. Because there has never
been a nanny in her life. What was happening? She must have been mistaken for
someone else. But the eyes of the woman named Meryl was looking at her without
any deceit. It was a gentle, kind and warm gaze, as if looking at a child she
has cared for, from the time that she was a child.

“Then…. Perhaps….” After a moment’s hesitation Audria opened her mouth “My name
is…. What is it?”

“Yes? My lady’s name..?” Meryl’s face instantly darkened with anxiety over the
fact that she couldn’t even remember her name. Meryl looked at her with a smile
even though her face looked complicated, as if her mind was filled with many
thoughts. The smile seemed to remind her of something. The more things happened,
the more questions that Audria had. ‘Who was this person and what was she doing
to her?’

“My lady is Audria Trudy.” Meryl replied in a friendly voice

Audria’s eyes widened. “…Audria?”

“Yes, the youngest daughter of the Duke Trudy. It has been your name since you
were born, so don’t forget it.” The warm and unaffected smile and the voice
which gave the answer, was comforting. But Audria didn’t know what to say when
she heard her name and surname. She almost lost it on hearing it, ‘Audria Trudy’

She couldn’t believe it. Audria is her name. It was also the name of the
youngest daughter of the Duke of Trudy, whose name was famous for belonging to
the empire’s greatest family and one that was wealthy enough to be compared to
the Imperial family. And now the ‘Audria Trudy’ which Meryl called her as is the
name of the only daughter of the Duke of Trudy.

“I’m…Audria…Trudy….”

“Of course, my lady’s name is Audria Trudy.”

She still couldn’t believe it, but the answer that came back was the same as
before. She seemed pretty sure that she was Audria Trudy…. That didn’t make
sense in the first place. But the woman named Meryl who referred to herself as a
nanny did not seem mistaken or as if she was lying.

Her head felt jumbled and her body trembled strangely.

“My Lady…. You really don’t remember anything? If you want, shall I bring the
doctor back again?” Meryl, who noticed the whitening of Audria’s face, asked
with a worried face. Yella who was standing just by the door, opened it and was
ready to go and call the doctor back.

Audria huffed a breath and shook her head.

“Oh, my lady. Fine, I’ll just stand here then….”
“Are you really okay, Miss? If you feel even a little bit uncomfortable, tell me
right away.”

“Uh… Okay… I will”

Fortunately the doctor was not called back. However, Meryl and Yella were still
concerned and anxious and kept fussing over her again and again.

“My lady, please lie down a little longer. You need to rest your body.” On
seeing that she was still trembling, Meryl thought that she was feeling cold,
pulled up the quilt and covered Audria till her neck.

“I’ll bring you some hot soup miss.”

Meryl left the room after covering her well with the quilt. Left alone, Audria
lifted the quilt that Meryl used to cover her and looked inside it. It was
strange to see her body, looking like someone else’s. Her heart gave a violent
jump. She couldn’t sit still.

She got off the bed and set foot on the floor. Since she had been lying down for
a long time, her legs started shaking as soon as she stood up and she stumbled,
but that wasn’t what mattered now.

‘The mirror…’ she thought ‘I need to check it with my own eyes.’

Fortunately, there was a full-body mirror in the room. Audria stood before it.
In fact, a part of her had expected what happened next even before she looked in
the mirror. The moment she had stepped down from the bed, the floor was quite
far. She took a step backwards and saw that she had small feet like that of a
child, when she looked down.

When she looked up, she saw her reflection and thought ‘I have really…. Become
Audria Trudy!’ Short limbs that still had a long way to grow and a body with
pale and white skin. None of which belonged to Audria. ‘It was a child’s body…’

The twenty-six year old Madame of the Ophelia shop was now the youngest daughter
of the Duke of Trudy.

CHAPTER 3.2

Posted on May 11, 2021 by perfectships
2

“Is it absolutely necessary to explain everything to teacher Huang?”

Huang Xin saw her act so indifferent and became even more energetic, saying
loudly: “It’s so disgusting. Shameless girls like you harm ballet itself.”

Jiang Yu ignored her and proceeded with the payment process. After which she got
up and left. Huang Xin was still bad mouthing Jiang Yu to her colleagues that
were standing around her.

Jiang Yu took out the phone from her pocket and said to Huang Xin in an
unhurried manner: “By the way, Ms. Huang, the things that you said to me just
now can be considered as insults and defamation. I will notarize this recording
and submit it to the public security division as an evidence for your slander.
At the same time, I will also submit a copy of the evidence to the mailbox of
the person in charge of Lingque Training Institution, so please be prepared
mentally.”

After saying this, Jiang Yu ignored the stunned Huang Xin as well as the other
surprised teachers standing around and just left the reception room.

Huang Xin knew the seriousness of what was said just said now. After a start,
she quickly caught up with Jiang Yu and squeezed out a smile with great
difficulty: “Jiang Yu, this teacher is not good. Could you please not hand over
this recording and delete it. I acknowledge that I was wrong.”

Jiang Yu could tell that Huang Xin was really nervous and scared. After all if
something like that came out, considering the popularity of Lingque Ballet, it
would definitely give rise to heated discussions on the internet.

As a teacher at Lingque, she would not only lose her job, she may be removed
from the ballet circle itself.

“Jiang Yu, you see, I know I shouldn’t have said anything hurtful to others like
I did just now, so please be magnanimous and don’t publish that recording.”

Looking at her constipated face, Jiang Yu just felt it was funny.

People who bullied others always feared facing hardships or the consequences of
their actions.

In the past, she gave up everything because she didn’t want to cause trouble,
but in return these people just bullied her more. Now she just punished them a
little, which made these people do an about turn so quickly in fright.

Of course, Jiang Yu also knew that when she pushed back like this, she could
only get emotional satisfaction for a while, but no benefits.

After rebirth, perhaps the biggest change for her was that she learned to judge
every situation like an adult.

Only children will vent their emotions however they want; but adults will always
strive to maximize their own interests.

She simply said to Huang Xin in a straightforward manner: “On two conditions.
First, publicly apologize to me in your circle of friends and apologize for all
the derogatory insults that you’ve made to me in the past three days.”

“But…”

“You don’t want to?”

“It’s no problem whatsoever, it’s just an apology.” Huang Xin gritted her teeth:
“Fine. Now what about the second condition?”

“Second, I want a spot in the ballet show that takes place at the end of the
year.”

“What! You want a spot in that show?!”

Jiang Yu nodded

“No. It’s impossible! How can you take part in that talent show?!”

At the end of every year, there will be teachers from the Esmeralda Art center
to select apprentices.

Esmeralda is the most authoritative ballet center in China. Many well-known
ballet artists in China are those who came out of Esmeralda. They were on a
whole new league compared to training centers like Lingque.

Even Bu Tanyan, the ballet queen that Jiang Yu admired the most, came from
Esmeralda.

Teachers at the Esmeralda Art center will look for the most talented ballet
students across the country and select them to give them specialized training.

The talent show that takes place at the end of the year was Jiang Yu’s only
opportunity.

“This… How can you participate in the talent show? It’s not my decision.” Huang
Xin said hesitantly and then continued: “I am not the chief decision maker.”

“There will be an internal selection in October, as long as my grades are high
and I meet the selection standards, teacher Huang should be able to help me to
get a place in that performance, right?”

Huang Xin gritted her teeth and said, “So you want to enter Esmeralda, but do
you know anything about it? The tuition fee is staggeringly high. Even if you
can get in, how can your family afford it?!”

“I will find a way to solve my tuition fees, so I don’t need teacher Huang to
worry about it.”

Huang Xin was afraid of the recording that was in Jiang Yu’s hands, so she could
only agree to her request for the time being.

She really couldn’t figure out, how Jiang Yu could have become a different
person overnight. She used to be very obedient to her teachers and never even
dared to think of pushing back. How is it that she couldn’t see throughout this
summer her methods becoming so powerful!

She didn’t dare to underestimate her anymore. After Jiang Yu left, she quickly
sent a short apology to her circle of friends saying-

‘I want to formally apologize to Jiang Yu. I have caused her harm in the past by
making many inappropriate remarks. After deeply reflecting on my mistakes, I
want to sincerely apologize to Jiang Yu: I’m sorry!’

As soon as this apologetical statement was issued, Jiang Yu’s cell phone
immediately started buzzing and vibrating continuously. All of the messages were
from the class group discussing this matter.

In the dance classes in her past life, she was completely artless; with her
extremely low self-esteem anyone could step on her, while she just gritted her
teeth and swallowed blood.

Who would have ever though that such a small person would actually make teacher
Huang Xin tender an apology in her circle of friends?

The students in the dance class all felt that this was incredible and made
various guesses. But Jiang Yu just put down the phone and ignored it all. She
has already died in her previous life and now she just wants to live the new
one.

***

On her way home, Jiang Yu receiver a message from the app, which was sent by Qiu
Li: “Have you found me?”

Jiang Yu frowned and replied: “No.”

Qiu Li: “Please hurry up. Serving this lifelong sentence is not easy.”

To be honest, even though she took on this task, Jiang Yu was still a little bit
embarrassed in her heart.

Qiu Li was a murderer and was said to be an indiscriminate one at that, with an
anti-social personality, because he killed her former husband Huo Cheng without
any motive or reason.

God only know what the young Qiu Li experienced. It was impossible for her to
contact such a person without feeling scared.

But since she has already accepted the task, she could only bite the bullet and
do it.

She said: “Can you send me the information about the you in the past?”

Qiu Li soon sent her an address. It said No.34 Ningyang Lane.

No. 34 Ningyang road was not far from where she was. She walked over to that
place by going through a few blocks.

This area belonged to the old city and was filled mostly with old and low-end
barrel units. The narrow alleyways were circuitous which would normally confuse
people.

The street lights by the roadside were very dim. Jiang Yu searched on her mobile
phone and had almost reached the vicinity of Ningyang road.

There seemed to be some movement in the front. Jiang Yu stepped forward quickly,
but saw a group of punks beating a teenager under the Juniper tree that was in
front of her.

The teenager was about sixteen or seventeen years old, with exceptionally tough
facial features, sharp eyes and looked quite a bit hostile.

He was lying on the ground, curled like a shrimp, under their punches and kicks,
but there was a blood filled and cold smile on the corner of his mouth.

“You dare to laugh!” The leader of the gangster grabbed him by the collar,
pulled him up and punched him on the face while saying: “Laugh again and I will
kill you!”

However, the other guy still laughed, in fact he laughed louder. It sounded more
and more mad, like that of a ghost from the depths of hell and was incredibly
crippling.

The gang leader punched him again and again: “Just try to laugh again! Go on
laugh!”

The other gangsters that were standing around saw that their leader actually
kept on hitting him and hurriedly grabbed him while saying: “Stop it before he
dies!”

“Rubbish.” The gang leader gave him another hard kick, swore at him and turned
to leave.

Jiang Yu hid behind the lamppost. She had already taken out her cell phone and
was ready to call the police, when she heard the gang leader yelling: “Qiu Li
you are just a mad dog that will bite everyone, go to hell!”

Soon the gangsters walked away. All the noise faded away and the night was
suddenly quiet as if the whole world had fallen asleep.

Qiu Li whose face was half buried in the mud, opened a bloody eye and saw a girl
in a white dress not that far away, hiding behind a lamppost, looking at him
with fear and worry like a frightened deer.

His eyesight was blurry because of the blood and the only thing that he could
see was her straight and long legs. It was like the muscles were made of ice
while the bones were made of jade; it was as white as the moon and was so
beautiful that he had the illusion that he was not in hell anymore.

GAMBLING AGREEMENT

The shopkeeper was quite impatient at first. Had it not been for the presence of
the distinguished guest, he would have chased out the yellow-haired girl who
looked like a beggar. After seeing the contents of the second bag that Shen
Ruolan held out, his tone became even more disdainful:

“Aren’t those just dry fennel seeds? What is so strange about those, we have a
lot of it in our shop and all of them are fresh.”

It seems cumin was a no as well.

Shen Ruolan was extremely disappointed. She wrapped up the cumin and was about
to leave. When suddenly the shopkeeper said to the man in blue robes: “Siye
Zhang, have you seen this? Now small girls come out to cheat. They take out two
unseen things and want to fool people. If it weren’t for my insight, I might
have been deceived by her. Hey the world is getting worse every day and even
young people’s hearts are bad!”

Shen Ruolan had already turned around to leave. Hearing the shopkeeper’s
ridicule, she couldn’t help but stop and turn around, staring at the shopkeeper
as she said: “It’s the shopkeeper who has no knowledge. I ask you, how did I
lie? And in what way did I lie to you?”

The shopkeeper snorted: “I have exposed you. So obviously you can’t cheat.
Otherwise you will say that these two things are condiments and sell them to
me.”

As he said that, he raised his chin in a grandiose manner, “You probably don’t
know it, but I have been in the seasoning business for a very long time, which
my Li family had been doing for generations and every Li starts to recognize and
differentiate the seasonings from the first meal. There is nothing I can’t
recognize. Just that your two things, the first one was not a seasoning at all
whereas the second one is clearly dried fennel seeds. With just these two things
you may be successful in fooling others, but trying to fool me is like trying to
blind a dog!”

Looking at his self-righteous and convinced appearance, Shen Ruolan just laughed
and said: “Just because the shopkeeper doesn’t recognize these two spices, he
insists that I am a liar. Aren’t you just biased? What if I can produce the
dishes made with these tow seasonings and the dishes are very delicious? What
will you say then?”

Shopkeeper LI squinted at Shen Ruolan as he pulled on his sparse goatee and saw
that she was dressed in rags and looked as thin as a monkey. She was just a poor
girl, who obviously didn’t even have enough to eat! What good food could she
make when she couldn’t even fill her stomach?

Of course, maybe she could cook with those two things, but just by looking at
her; it was obvious that she must have never eaten any good food. If she could
cook something delicious, it could be one of the best delicacies in the world!

It must me so!

Thinking of this, his eyes flashed as he thought what a good opportunity he had
got, so he patted the counter and said boldly: “If you can really make delicious
dishes with these two things, I will admit that I am blind, I will also pay you
two silvers if I lose, but-“

His tone changed as he asked with a slightly malicious smile as she said: “If
you can’t make it or the things that you make are not delicious, what will you
do?”

Shen Ruolan said: “If I can’t make anything, or if the things I make are not
delicious, I will leave things to your disposal, how about it?”

As soon as the shopkeeper Li heard it, he got excited. This was what he was
waiting for.

Although this yellow-haired girl didn’t seem capable of working hard, but at any
rate he could do only a little bit of cooking and he would be happy to let a
girl do it for nothing.

“Okay, it’s a deal. If you can use these two things to make something delicious
today, I’ll give you two taels of silver. If you can’t make it or try playing
some messy tricks on me, you will voluntarily serve me as a maid for life. Girl,
do you dare to agree?”

There were two taels of silver to earn. Of course, Shen Ruolan was not going to
back down with a smile. She smiled, “If there is anything I dare not agree to,
it is that I am afraid that treasurer Li will not settle the account when I win.
Let’s find a witness to be a middleman just to be safe.”

Shopkeeper Li also wants to find a middleman, otherwise this girl may renege
when she loses, then wouldn’t he have got happy for nothing?

It just so happened, that Zhang Siye, the owner of ‘Sihai Restaurant’ was here
and Zhang Siye could be regarded as a person with clout in the county, making it
appropriate for him to be the middleman.

Shopkeeper Li arched out his hand towards Zhang Siye and said with a smile:
“Zhang Siye, may I trouble you to be a witness for this matter today?”

While he was talking, the smile on Li’s face couldn’t be hidden. He really
didn’t know what good fortune he had hit today. He had negotiated a big deal
with the owner of the ‘Sihai Restaurant’ and could make more than four or five
taels in one go. And being able to get a girl as a maid for her lifetime,
although the girl was young and very thin, it was still much better than having
to pay to hire people. He was really lucky!

Zhang Siye looked coldly at both of them; saw the shopkeeper Li smiling, looking
like his winning was a forgone conclusion and then at the ragged and skinny
little girl, whose eyes were calm with a confidence that was far beyond her age.

He couldn’t help but remind her: “Little girl, just think about it, okay? If you
lose, you will be a slave. You don’t want to work like a bull and a horse in
this life. Your life and death are now because of your own words and it’s too
late to regret it. Don’t be reckless and arrogant!”

Shen Ruolan was very grateful for Zhang Siye’s kindness and she could see that
Zhang Siye was a very responsible and righteous person. She could use him as the
witness without any qualms and be rest assured of a fair judgment!

Shen Ruolan smiled and said: “Thank you Zhang Siye for reminding me. Don’t
worry, I won’t lose. I won’t go back on my words. Even if I lose, I am willing
to honor my bet. I am the only one in my family. So, I can decide for myself.”

On seeing that Shen Ruolan insisted on gambling and seeing that she was calm and
relaxed and that she had confidence in herself, he just said: “Okay, it just so
happens that I want to see how a little girl can make a dish with these two
things. What is it that you will be making?”

Shen Ruolan stretched out her hand to remove the patched cloth that covered her
basket and took out the bowl of boiled pork slices that had a layer of red
Sichuan pepper floating on it, put it on the counter and then took out the bowl
of cumin chicken gizzards and said: “Actually, I made these two dishes at home.
Just pour out this bowl of boiled pork slices into a pot and heat it up. The
other dish of cumin gizzards can just be stir-fried with a little oil. These are
the two dishes that I said. I request Siye Zhang to appraise the two seasonings
that I have used.

Zhang Siye leant down and saw a layer of Sichuan pepper on the boiled pork
slices and densely packed cumin in on the cumin chicken gizzards. He nodded and
said, “It is indeed made with those two seasonings.”

Shen Ruolan then said to shopkeeper Li: “I want to borrow shopkeeper Li’s back
kitchen for a while, otherwise these two dishes cannot be eaten and we cannot go
on with our bet.

When the shopkeeper Li saw the appearance of the two dishes, he felt bad in his
heart. He didn’t expect that this yellow-haired girl who had such a poor and
pathetic appearance could make such a beautiful dish. Looking at the boiled pork
slices which were so colorful-predominantly red with black and green mixed in.
Just looking at it will make people’s appetite increase.

And the cumin chicken gizzards- the pieces of chicken gizzards are fried till
they were golden and glistening with oil. How could it not taste good?

He secretly winked at his two assistants and said: “Wangcai, Ergou, take these
two dishes to the back kitchen and heat it up.”

On receiving the hint from the shopkeeper they each took a bowl of food and
hurried to the back kitchen.
