This website is running since 2006, but gets updated regularly. A new design is
in the making...

      artist statement:

           As our daily Internet
           routines are eagerly
           collected by algorithms
        and permanently adhered onto
our digital selves to be exploited
       as big data, what, rather
        if data collections
      would trigger an installation
        or performance?

     My work explores the
      usually hidden functionalities
         of technology, making aspects
         such as real-time data collection,
          as in weather or environmental
             data, or user classification
              of our personal information
                throughout networked
                   and AI systems, visible.

                         By translating the
                          logical and
                         metaphorical
                        components of our
                       (Inter-) networked
                      digital world – e.g. interfaces
or languages such as HTML –
                      into physical, material, even
                     edible format, and by twisting
                    their original intention
                  with humor and absurdity,
                 the controlling aspects
             of networked structures
        become powerless,
       nullified really, and
      a shell rather that
     can be used for
    reflection, play,
  and re-evaluation.

@ Chronus Art Center, Shanghai.

Light and Dark Networks consists of two online "data performances"
— taking place at sunset and sunrise, respectively — inspired by
the structures of natural networks and affected by weather and
environmental changes in Shanghai. The piece was originally
commissioned for Sunrise/Sunset for artport at the Whitney
Museum of American Art's website in 2011 using NYC data.
Depending on the time of day virtual creatures — a spider
in her spiderweb, during daytime, or mushrooms popping
out from their mycelium, during nighttime,
(which I'm impersonating) — perform
different "data dances"...
Check in on them occasionally...
...until May 23!

RECENTLY: We=Link: Sideways @ Chronus Art Center, Shanghai.
I am utmost excited and very honored to be part of WE=Link:Sideways
an exhibition about the history of net art at the Chronus Art Center
curated by Zhang Ga, opening on November 21, 2020.
The exhibit shows 22 works by 28 artists and artist collectives,
from the pioneers of net art to millennials!
Works can be visited in the gallery and online until May 23, 2021.

We=Link: Sideways is co-presented online with Haus der
Elektronischen Künste (Basel), ZKM | Center for Art and Media
Karlsruhe, V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam), Ars at
CERN (Geneva), Elektra (Montreal) and many others, and presented
in collaboration with artport of The Whitney Museum of American Art.

  RECENT ARTICLE:
A great essay titled "Sideways" by Zhang Ga accompanying the
exhibit We=Link: Sideways is published on Leonardo.
"The exhibition 'takes the purported net art's *dead end* as
a new starting point to chart a discursive trajectory of the practices
since then, in the many manifestations of network-based art...
Sideways reveals the continuum of the Avant-garde *nettitudes* inherent
in the works of these net artists... Two works under the auspices of
SUNRISE / SUNSET will take over the exhibition website and several
partner institutions' websites... by direct intervention based on local
time and environmental data... revealing the intrinsic logic of locality
in globality, and the disruptiveness and transformative nature
of the network."

  RECENT ARTICLE:
"Traces of Life at the Hive Art Community"
by Danni Shen for Creatrix Magazine,
November 15, 2020. It states:
"In the interconnected networks of the Internet, where freedom
is increasingly indistinguishable from control, Traces of Life
offers up strategies to diversify and decentralize virtual space
through creating community, cultural narratives, empower
marginalized voices and collectives, while deconstructing and
complicating lived experience in and out of the infosphere."

  October 22, 2020
I've been invited by The Hive
to perform a networked performance piece from 2011
- interACTicons. A challenge to work within
the constraints of Zoom!

"interACTicons" questions online activities and re-enacts
social-media terminology. Using its audience-submitted video
database (collected in 2011-12) to replace "likes" or "follows"
et.al. in websites with video enactments of these terms, the
performance is driven by a historical list of the most used
social-media sites from 9 years ago, while its score is built on
the fly. Following this data stream Yuki Kawahisa and I will
re-enact ideas from back then and juxtapose these with a new
physical vocabulary - on Zoom.

Part of The Hive Art Community's exhibit "Traces Of Life"
curated by Fang Yu Liu and Kathie Halfin. Other performers
this evening were Cayla Skillin Brauchle and Jana
Astanov.

In this fantastic group show, my brother Michael and I were collaborating

The English translation for this automat as a "finite state machine"
defines it as a mathematical model of computation, a system
which can only be in exactly one of a finite number of states
(endlicher = finite) at any particular moment.
Enacting this simple computational rule in a performative take,
the Endlicher siblings make this abstract machine "their" automat.

Turned into ceramic plates they transcend their usual function of "taking"
users'
personal data by "giving back" to the audience - by serving finger-food and
short movie-clips.

The Old Internet is outmost thrilled to receive compliments in:

who talks about ye olden days of the world wide web.
Just trying to imagine the Internet in the 90s, even, proves difficult;
there's so few archives around to showcase what Aunt Sue's Geocities
looked like. So it's a fine and noble task to keep circulating that historical
memory. "
