Parents can be comforted with the knowledge that Camp Tanamakoon prides itself on staffing with Counselors that are responsible, energetic, fun loving and exhibiting outstanding leadership skills. In fact most of our Counselors are former campers themselves and they return every year as role models for the children. The Counselors work under the supervision of Camp Directors and a Doctor and Nurse reside full time at the camp to supervise campers' health. Camp Tanamakoon is dedicated to the highest standards and preserves the traditional camp values while promoting the self esteem of our young campers. The program provides flexibility and the needs of each camper are taken into account. Your child will quickly feel she is part of the Tanamakoon family and will want to return every year to participate in the camp which provides life long experience for the campers. Campers live in comfortable wood cabins or platform tents. Younger campers have live in counselors. Accommodation placement is determined in consultation with the camper families in advance of the camp season. From time to time special trips are arranged for the older campers outside of the boundaries of Algonquin Park. These excursions are called tripping and include mountain biking, kayaking and canoe trips to the Ottawa and French rivers. Daily activities for younger campers are structured so that they can obtain a foundation of camping skills. Programs are filled with exciting new learning experiences and skill development. Older campers can deviate from standard programs to allow for individual interests. All activities are planned and supervised by trained Counselors who pay attention to the needs of each child. Regular activities include such things as environmental studies, wood crafting, racquet sports, mountain biking, climbing wall, archery, fitness, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, arts & crafts, live theatre acting, pottery, music and miniature horse care - just to name a few. Swimming classes include Lifesaving and Red Cross instruction. A safety system is in place to ensure your child's camp experience will be safe and accident free. Camp Tanamakoon will provide your daughter with an exceptional experience that she can apply to situations and challenges that may arise throughout childhood development and adult life. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience a real wilderness setting and develop a true appreciation for our natural environment. We invite you to take a good look at our web site. We can also provide you with a CD and brochure reading material. We are always happy to answer any detailed questions you may have. Camp Tanamakoon prides itself in offering an Ontario girls camp experience that is second to none. We would also like to leave you with this thought. Algonquin Provincial Park is one of the few places left on the planet where things are fairly much as they were since the beginning of time. Camp Tanamakoon is located right inside Algonquin Park and as such it gives the campers a sense that there was a time where things were quite different - before cities developed - and an understanding that food on the table did not always materialize from a grocery store. Campers come to realize that there is a bigger picture out there than just video games and shopping. At Tanamakoon they are surrounded by the majesty of nature and it is an experience that is an important element in a child's development. It can't be bought at a store, or absorbed in an urban environment. Tanamakoon teaches respect for our natural surroundings and provides an example that translates to a lifelong awareness. Land Acknowledgement We acknowledge that we are visitors of the Ancestral territory of the Algonquin and Nipissing people, who have been caretakers of this land since time immemorial. Camp Tanamakoon has the responsibility to uphold good relations to land, water, animals, insects, and each other. As stewards of this land, we are committed to educating campers, each other and our broader community. We promise to always listen, learn, and engage in truth-telling, looking to the peoples of this land for guidance as to how we can be good relations. As a camp, we will encourage ongoing consciousness and learning about our shared history between Indigenous and settler peoples in Canada and Turtle Island. We will take this knowledge and responsibility with us once we leave camp, whether on trip or back home, and apply this practice to all facets of our life. As settlers, we are committed to establishing and upholding good relations with Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island. KINDERCAMP At Tanamakoon girls ages 4 - 6 can have their first overnight camp experience for 3 days in early or late summer. OUTDOOR ED The Tanamakoon Outdoor Centre has operated for 27 years, for co-ed school groups mid May to mid June and the last two weeks of September. ADULT PROGRAMS Spend quality time in Algonquin Park with opportunities to share a variety of experiences with like minded, interesting people from fifty five years onward.
