A robust area of low pressure will dart across central and eastern Canada through the homestretch of the workweek. A cold front attached to it and a series of energetic disturbances aloft plus plenty of Arctic air oozing south behind the front will lead to plenty of wintry weather throughout the week across a lot of the northern-third of the country. First to see the flakes fly are the northern Washington Cascades and Montana’s Rocky Front Range as well as parts of central Montana’s Plains today. Light snow will spread further southeast into Wyoming and Colorado’s Rocky Front Range this afternoon before intensifying and covering more of Colorado and northern New Mexico by Wednesday morning. Winter Weather Advisories and a Winter Storm Watch remains in place for the Oregon and Washington Cascades as well as across northern Idaho and western and central Montana. Here, snowfall totals of 1 to 6 inches will be common, as will gusts of 30 to 50 mph leading to blowing and drifting snow. Travel will be difficult, especially near Highway 83 from Bigfork to Swan Lake, Marias Pass and Polebridge, Mont., through early Wednesday. Blizzard Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are also in effect across the eastern Dakotas and northwestern Minnesota, where blizzard conditions are possible due to the combination of snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches and wind gusts up to 45 mph. In addition, Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings remain in place from eastern-most Montana to western-most Minnesota. Gusts will top out at 60 to 65 mph, blowing and drifting the snow about through this morning. Meanwhile, the cold front will mix with Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic air to produce a large band of snow, sleet and freezing rain for midweek. Significant snow is likely north of Interstate 40, 44, and 70 from Kansas and the Texas Panhandle to northern Ohio. A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will slowly sink south to Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Okla., St. Louis, Columbia and Joplin, Mo., to Indianapolis Wednesday. By Thursday, Arctic high pressure will roll into the Upper Midwest, forcing the front further south from central Texas to New York State and interior New England. This will lead to disruptive wintry weather from Albuquerque, N.M., and Dallas, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Ark., Louisville, Ky., Cleveland, Buffalo, N.Y., to Burlington, Vt., and Portland, Maine, just to mention a few cities. The end of the week will come with more uncertainty, as significant snow and a dangerous icy mix could spread into Tennessee’s Interstate 40 corridor and along the Interstate 95 corridor from northern Virginia to eastern Maine. However, the position of the cold front and the exact track of a moisture-laden area of low pressure remain uncertain this far away. Additional Winter Weather Advisories, Winter Storm Watches and Winter Storm Warnings extend from Colorado and New Mexico to central Texas and western New York from Tuesday to Friday morning. Many locations will be digging out from several inches to nearly 2 feet of snow by week’s end, the jackpot likely near and northwest of the Interstate 70 corridor in the Ohio Valley to New York State. A couple inches of snow and one-tenth to one-third inch of ice accretion is possible from near Dallas to Louisville, Ky., and west of Albany, N.Y. Make sure to download the WeatherBug app to stay up to date on the latest on this significant storm. It’s also never too early to have a supply kit packed in case of inclement weather. A simple kit including a weather radio, water, blankets, batteries and non-perishable food items will go a long way in the event of a power outage. It’s always best to avoid travel in rough weather as the roads will be dangerous.
