SPOTLIGHT: MAY 27, 2022

Congratulations, Class of 2022! Friday’s Commencement ceremony celebrates the
1,099 undergraduate and 2,590 graduate students receiving MIT diplomas this
year. Alumna Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the WTO, will deliver the
address.

New graduate Ayomikun “Ayo” Ayodeji, an active community builder who is
double-majoring in chemical engineering and management, aims to improve
electricity access for communities back home in Nigeria, and across the African
continent.

It’s known on campus as “The Sponge.” But junior Karyn Nakamura recently
transformed Simmons Hall’s iconic façade into an interactive canvas. “In Karyn
we have an artist who is a peer,” says Joshua Higgason, a technical instructor
in theater arts.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Political science graduate student Milain Fayulu is on a mission. Born in the
Democratic Republic of Congo, Fayulu is telling, and selling, the story of his
nation in the hope of aiding its people and transforming its economy.

AROUND CAMPUS

Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson, the president of Iceland, visited MIT Friday. The
delegation toured the Media Lab and spoke with campus leaders and professors
about a variety of topics, including AI applications and the Icelandic language.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Postbac researcher Jessica Chomik-Morales hopes to inspire a new generation of
Spanish-speaking neuroscientists with her podcast, “Mi Última Neurona.” Postdoc
Arturo Deza says: “Even if you’re not a scientist, it’s really going to
captivate you.”
