THE WHY BEHIND OUR COURSE

Why Pivot?
Course Outline

WHY PIVOT YOUR OIL AND GAS CAREER?

The World Petroleum Congress estimates that globally 5 million new jobs are
appearing in new energy fields, and at the same time, 14 million oil and gas
jobs will be slowly eliminated from the industry. There are not enough qualified
engineers to fill the new jobs, and paradoxically, those who are in the legacy
roles are often viewed as unqualified to take on these new roles. With the
lessons taught in the Engineer Career Pivot course, we have made pivots in our
oil and gas careers and want to help other engineering professionals in the
field do the same.

OUR COURSE

This Engineer Career Pivot course follows the Strategy Cascade method developed
by Roger Martin and optimized for use by individuals seeking to pivot their
careers.

 1. Overview of the method: the five steps to follow.
 2. Goals and Aspirations: Establish your personal goals and aspirations that
underpin your ambition and/or desire to pivot your career. Goals are
structured around financial, health, relationships, spiritual, career,
family, and other key dimensions. Test to see that your situation is meeting
    your goals and aspirations.
 3. Industries and Opportunities: Identify promising industries and
opportunities within those industries. Use the STEEPLE framework (social,
technology, environment, economy, politics, legal, ethical) to build a point
of view about how broad macro changes are driving shifts in the energy
landscape. Gauge how well positioned your industry, company, and job are
relative to these changes. Are you sensing a divergence between how you see
the world unfolding and how your company sees the world.
 4. Personal possibilities: Find your spikes (particular strengths or skills)
and troughs (experience gaps). Test to see that you in the right
role/division/company/industry in light of your spikes. Working from the
opportunities, identify personal possibilities that match your spikes. Look
    out five years.
 5. Identify your gaps: Consider a set of common gaps (storytelling, networking,
financial acumen) and opportunity specific gaps (technical skills)
 6. Build your pyramid: Identify the choices and actions that will move you to
your dream job. Foundational changes that sharpen spikes and fill troughs.

Suzanna M (Chemical Engineer)

I thoroughly enjoyed it. This made me think about aspects of the industry I
don’t normally pay close attention to.

Phil J, PE (Electrical Engineer)

It was really helpful that you included your personal examples. It gave me
confidence in the process.

John B (Mechanical Engineer)

I like that it was based on a tried and true business methodology. The
instructors were engaging and kept my interest throughout the entire course.
