WELCOME TO THE MANAGED LANDSCAPES DESIGN LAB

How do landscapes serve as mediums of change through active stewardship
practices? What is the role of environmental management as it relates to issues
of climate change, justice, resilience and adaptation?

Welcome to the Managed Landscapes Design Lab [MDL] run by Dr. Julia Smachylo.
The lab engages with the entangled relations of human and non-human nature, with
particular attention given to the changing contours of our governance systems,
institutions, and environments. What is meant by management, maintenance, and
design in these contexts? In this regard our work is speculative, we as a lab
are constantly re-interrogating our methods, our definitions, and assumptions as
the world changes around us. Working between local, regional, and planetary
scales we investigate the trajectories of management practices across different
levels of engagement, with a focus on the changing scales and agents involved,
to envision more socially and environmentally sound futures.
