This is a common problem when it comes to including people with disabilities at work. Perhaps you don’t know the right words to use or what accommodations could be helpful. And you may even be making inaccurate assumptions that a person with a specific disability can’t do certain jobs. In this session, we will foster a safe space where you can get uncomfortable and ask the questions about language and access that you may be too afraid to voice anywhere else. At the end, we’ll share ways to be a better ally to disabled colleagues and friends. SESSION TWO SESSION 2: CHECKING YOUR ASSUMPTIONS: ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND ACCESSIBILITY IN THE WORKPLACE Wednesday, June 21, 2023 — 12:00 noon – 1:15 pm ET There are a lot of assumptions of what disabled people can and can’t do at work — and those assumptions often rely on an old understanding of how assistive technology helps in the workplace. The landscape is evolving and allowing disabled people to access the tools of work in unprecedented ways. In this session, we’ll identify practices your organization might be unintentionally implementing that signal to the community that you don’t value inclusion. We’ll also delve into things you can do or change to be more inclusive. Then, the team at Remarkable US, our assistive technology accelerator, will share highlights of the assistive technology space and the different types of tools employees with disabilities can use. SESSION THREE SESSION 3: BIAS IN THE WORKPLACE: HIRING, ONBOARDING, AND BEYOND Wednesday, July 19, 2023 — 12:00 noon – 1:15 pm ET Whether you work in HR or run a team, you have to make hiring and onboarding decisions. And here’s something you may not know: Gen Z is disclosing their disabilities at a higher rate than any prior generation. That means to hire and keep young talent, it’s more important than ever to be thoughtful about your hiring process and how you support workers once they join your organization. In this session, we’ll talk about inclusive and exclusionary hiring and onboarding practices and give recommendations for ways to adjust your procedures to create a more diverse pipeline and set disabled workers up for success.
