HOCHUL: STUDENTS WHOSE FAMILIES MAKE UP TO $125K CAN APPLY NOW FOR FREE COLLEGE TUITION IN SPRING 2024 * Published: Dec. 26, 2023, 4:27 p.m. The application process for New York’s Excelsior Scholarship is now open to new applicants for the Spring 2024 term. (Staten Island Advance/Annalise Knudson) * * By * Erik Bascome | tbascome@siadvance.com Eligible New York students looking to enter college this upcoming spring can now apply for free college tuition. Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the application process for New York’s Excelsior Scholarship is now open to new applicants for the Spring 2024 term. The Excelsior Scholarship fills a tuition gap after federal and state financial aid — providing the potential for a tuition-free college experience for eligible state residents at City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY) colleges. “The Excelsior Scholarship is a game changer for students across New York State who might not have the financial means to pursue higher education,” Hochul said. “This program is making college more affordable and accessible for low- and middle-income families, giving them the opportunity to obtain their college degree. By investing in our future workforce, we are investing in our economy and ensuring a strong and prosperous future for all New Yorkers.” The Spring 2024 Excelsior Scholarship application is now open to first-time students entering college this spring and current college students who have never received the Excelsior Scholarship, with the Feb. 2 deadline just over a month away. Students currently receiving an Excelsior Scholarship do not need to complete this application to receive continued award payments. To be eligible for a Spring 2024 Excelsior Scholarship award students must: * be a resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term; * be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen; * have either graduated from high school in the United States, earned a high school equivalency diploma, or passed a federally approved “Ability to Benefit” test, as defined by the Commissioner of the State Education Department; * have a combined federal adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less; * be pursuing an undergraduate degree at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University; * be enrolled in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 credits each year (successively), applicable toward his or her degree program through continuous study with no break in enrollment except for certain reasons that can be documented; * if attended college prior to the 2024-25 academic year, have earned at least 30 credits each year (successively), applicable toward his or her degree program prior to applying for an Excelsior Scholarship; * be in a non-default status on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or on the repayment of any NYS award; * be in compliance with the terms of the service condition(s) imposed by any NYS award that you have previously received; and * execute a Contract agreeing to reside in NYS for the length of time the award was received, and, if employed during such time, be employed in NYS. The Excelsior Scholarship is provided by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), New York’s higher education student financial aid agency. In 2022, roughly 58% of full-time resident undergraduate students attended SUNY and CUNY tuition-free, including 53% at SUNY State-operated campuses and 67% at CUNY colleges. “With this program’s continued implementation, we are breaking down barriers so more low and middle-income students can benefit from a quality education, opening doors to more job opportunities, enhancing socioeconomic mobility, and fostering a more inclusive society,” said HESC President Dr. Guillermo Linares. >> MORE RESOURCES FOR NY COLLEGE KIDS >> If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
