Copy URL ABSTRACT At the inaugural Frontiers in Hydrology Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the summer of 2022, the Hydrology Section organized a poster session and invited our 2020 and 2021 Classes of AGU Fellows, with the initial goal of both celebrating their careers as well as to provide an opportunity for an informal exchange and connection between the section's early career members and our more senior and established scientists and engineers. Due to the challenges of time zones, virtual poster presentations and other logistics, the formal poster session was adjourned but continued as a hybrid “meet-up” with six of our Section's Fellows (Suzanne Anderson, Paul Brooks, Aaron Packman, Remko Uijlenhoet, Andrew Western, and Xubin Zeng) from around the world. As you will see, what started as an informal chat quickly took deep dives into pressing issues in our section and science in general, including thoughts on how our community values (or in some cases doesn't value) multi- and interdisciplinary accomplishments, critiques of our system of rewards and awards including how we assess publication impacts and finally, a frank and honest discussion of our current efforts to diversify our community and where/why are we still failing. We hope that by sharing this open and impromptu dialogue that these discussions can expand to our entire community, and to encourage future Fellows exchanges such as this to reach our entire community of scientists and engineers. KEY POINTS * How we value our scientific contributions and impacts needs to expand beyond the traditional metrics of counting publications, grants, etc., that we have used in the past * While interdisciplinary science, broad scientific thinking and societally relevant science are often stated as important to success in hydrology, these contributions are less recognized in the awards processes than individual accomplishments or narrowly focused scientific contributions * How we do our science and how we evaluate it have significantly evolved over the timescales of the careers of our recent Fellows, but the pace of evolution must increase to address the most pressing societal issues PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY In June of 2022, six of the recently elected American Geophysical Union Fellows from the Hydrology Section sat down (some virtually, some in person) to discuss their careers, their research and to share their stories with the community of hydrologic scientists and engineers. While originally intended as a "meet and great" quickly evolved into a thoughtful retrospective on both what we value as members of a scientific community, as well as how we assess that value in our awards and recognition process. The discussion then pivots to how we can and must reach out to both broaden our community and to make our science impactful for policy and planning going forward. 1 INTRODUCTION At the inaugural Frontiers in Hydrology Meeting in June of 2022, the Hydrology Executive Sub-Committee held a poster session to recognize and meet our 2020 and 2021 classes of Fellows. Invitations were sent to all Fellows associated with the Hydrology Section in those years, with the goal of having an opportunity for our early career members to informally meet our Fellows. Due to logistical and COVID challenges, we revised the format of the session to a hybrid session and fortuitously recorded it! What began as an informal discussion with six of our recent Fellows (Suzanne Anderson, Paul Brooks, Aaron Packman, Remko Uijlenhoet, Andrew Western, and Xubin Zeng) quickly morphed into a deeper dive into the philosophies of science and a recognition of the importance of change for the future. The video (Movie 1) has only been slightly edited for time, and as you will see below, while the conversation was highly organic, we have structured the video under several general topics of discussion. This video cannot be streamed at this time, please download the video instead. Movie Download Video (.mp4 212MB) Reflections and thoughts on the future of science from AGU Hydrology Section fellows. All participants consent to having their images reproduced in this article. The full-text HTML version of this article includes video content. To view this version please visit https://onlinelinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2023CN000206. While our panel is made up of recent Fellows associated with Hydrology Section, the discussion topics and debate are not specific to hydrology. Rather it is widely applicable to all sections of the AGU, and we encourage viewers from across the AGU spectrum of disciplines to view and join in the discussion. This approximately hour-long video presentation can be viewed in its entirety, or viewers may watch in segments as outlined below in the timeline. The presentation may also be used without restriction as part of a classroom instruction to stimulate discussion, or in a seminar format. To obtain a higher resolution version of the video for classroom or seminar use, please contact the corresponding author directly (styler@unr.edu). We welcome your comments, thoughts and suggestions for future topics as well. And we thank the Editorial Board of AGU Perspectives of Earth and Space Sciences for giving us the opportunity to publish in a new and vibrant format. 2 TIMELINE OF PRESENTATION (TIMES LISTED INDICATE THE START OF A SECTION) * 0:00:00: Introduction to the presentation. * 0:03:28: Fellows introductions and their research background. * 0:22:42: How did you get to where you are and what are your philosophies of research? * 0:48:28: Lessons learned beyond academia. * 1:05:09: The value of community. * 1:07:35: Wrap up and thanks. * 1:08:5: End. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors wish to recognize the support of the American Geophysical Union and the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Incorporated through its NSF support (EAR-1848458) and the staffs of both organizations for their efforts to launch the inaugural Frontiers in Hydrology Meeting where this session was first presented. We also wish to thank the joint AGU/CUAHSI Program Committee for their extraordinary work in organizing the Frontiers meeting, and for supporting this new format for this poster session as well as the National Science Foundation (under Grants EAR-2226281 and EAR-1849458) for its support of students and early career members at the Frontiers meeting. And finally, the authors which to thank the editors and reviewers of AGU Perspectives in Earth and Space Sciences for the encouragement and kind words to support a novel format of journal presentation.
