CLINICAL TRIAL SERVICES

We, at CVS Health Clinical Trial Services™, are working to advance health care
by making clinical trial research more accessible to all communities, with a
focus on improving health outcomes and enhancing the effectiveness of clinical
trials.




THE NEED FOR CHANGE

Clinical trials are important research programs designed to evaluate the safety
and effectiveness of new medicines, vaccines, devices and other therapies. They
are required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to evaluate whether such
therapeutics should be approved for use in clinical practice and by patients.
Lasting months or even years, these studies are critical to the advancement of
health care and depend on the participation of clinically-appropriate
volunteers.

Despite their importance, 80% of clinical trials do not meet designated patient
enrollment deadlines, with over 10% of research sites failing to enroll even one
patient. Of patients actually enrolled in trials, an average of 30% drop out for
reasons including inconvenient trial site location, complex participation
requirements and trial duration.1

CVS HEALTH CLINICAL TRIAL SERVICES CAPTURES EARLY EMERGENCE OF SARS-COV-2
VARIANTS

During a nine-month contract with the Federal Government, CVS Health Clinical
Trial Services (CTS) analyzed COVID-19 test results from retail locations in 35
states and Washington, D.C. The data analyzed provided trends and patterns of
COVID-19 infections, illustrating the importance of real-time tracking. While
the study was ongoing, CTS data delivered early identification of increases in
COVID-19 infections and relative comparisons in infection rate between
unvaccinated and fully vaccinated populations.

COVID-19 TRIAL RECRUITMENT SUPPORTING DIVERSITY INCLUSION

A recent COVID-19 trial required a large volume of COVID-19 positive patients to
enroll in the trial within five days of their swab test. Through our engagement
with communities across the U.S., we were able to engage approximately 4,000
interested and qualified individuals per week and invite them to participate in
the study.

A primary objective of our efforts was to ensure representation of diverse
populations in the study. Inclusion of individuals from varied races, age,
ethnicities and gender provides a more complete view of the patient populations
that can respond differently to therapies. We are proud to share that close to
49% of the individuals in this COVID-19 effort who opted in to learn more were
from diverse populations.

From precision patient recruitment with a trial ready, diverse population to
trial delivery and real-world evidence generation, we are working to make
clinical research more effective and easier for people to access and to
participate.

the local services that we offer to the people that come through our doors every

In fact, more than 85% of Americans live within 10 miles of a CVS retail health
location where we offer over 125 health care services and administration of over
25 vaccines.

In addition to our established health care services, our experience also
includes clinical trial support. We have delivered over 200 in-home clinical
trials by Coram®, engaged and pre-screened hundreds of thousands of individuals
for study participation, worked with top pharmaceutical and medical device
companies on real-world evidence generation, and have contributed to a number of
peer-reviewed research publications. Our model is reflective of the value
achieved by keeping the patient at the core of what we do.


ON THE FRONT LINES, ADVANCING HEALTHCARE

We have collaborated with the pharmaceutical industry to help facilitate
clinical trials for investigational COVID-19 vaccines and treatments. Using a
specially designed digital model and screening protocols, CVS Health engaged
more than 300,000 volunteers who met the study inclusion criteria for COVID-19
vaccine trial consideration and helped them connect to studies close to where
they live.

By engaging volunteers who match both the rigorous clinical and location
requirements, we can improve access to clinical trials and participants’ ability
to stay in these critical studies.
