Īt Cambridge, Walpole came under the influence of Conyers Middleton, an unorthodox theologian. More important were another group of friends dubbed the "Quadruple Alliance": Walpole, Thomas Gray, Richard West, and Thomas Ashton. At Eton he formed a schoolboy confederacy, the "Triumvirate", with Charles Lyttelton (later an antiquary and bishop) and George Montagu (later a member of parliament and Private Secretary to Lord North). Walpole's first friends were probably his cousins Francis and Henry Conway, to whom he became strongly attached, especially Henry. He was also educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. Like his father, he received early education in Bexley in part under Edward Weston. Walpole was born in London, the youngest son of British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole and his wife, Catherine. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments BEALE STREET JAMES BALDWIN I was 16, white, middle class, and had spent exactly one night of my life in New York, at a Holiday Inn. The same summer that Beale Street was published, I read it far from New York, in a quiet, leafy suburb of what was called in those days “the New South,” and the news that book brought me might as well have come from another planet. “You can beat the rap, but you can’t beat the ride,” is a saying you hear among lawyers of the criminal defense bar, and the ordeal that Tish, Fonny, and their families endure is a very harsh ride indeed. The perpetrator of the arrest-of the entire maddening injustice of Fonny’s incarceration-is one Officer Bell, a blue-eyed, red-haired New York City cop who, for no good reason, has it in for Fonny.īeale Street is a tragedy, not without hope at the end, but a tragedy nevertheless. It tells the story of Tish and Fonny, two very young (she’s 19, he’s 22) African-Americans in New York City who are in love, engaged to be married, then find the fragile trajectory of their lives thrown off by Fonny’s arrest for a rape he did not commit. The novel of the same name by James Baldwin and on which the movie is based was published in June 1974. If Beale Street Could Talk, a movie directed by Barry Jenkins, opens in limited release December 14. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments THE INVERTED WORLD BY CHRISTOPHER PRIEST Very subtly, the story shifts from a coming of age story to a bizarro, Odyssey-like journey to a chronicle of a very warped world, and back. Without giving anything away (the revealing is so much of the fun!), I'd just say that it's one of the more unique fictional worlds I've inhabited lately, to the point where comparisons are difficult - if you mash up China Mieville, Terry Pratchett and Haruki Murakami, with a dash of George Lucas, you might be in the ball park? The book is marked by a lot of playful, artful zig zags. The main business here is the building of an outlandishly original fantasy world, artfully revealed to us in provocative flashes by a young apprentice named Helward. Inverted World is the first book by Priest I've read, and I found it to be a revelation. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments SHOGUN BY JAMES CLAVELL REVIEW I read James Clavell’s Shogun so you don’t have to. It’s inconsistent, irresponsible, exoticizing, ahistorical, and long-winded. He breathes narrative … He writes in the oldest and grandest tradition that fiction knows”īut in my estimation in 2021, there is little to commend this book. It may be something that cannot be taught or earned. Reviewing the book for The New York Times in 1975, Webster Schott wrote “Clavell has a gift. I reread and live-tweeted my re-read as a stretch goal on my Patreon. However, twenty years later, as a published novelist with a doctorate in Japanese history, my opinion has changed. When I was in high school in the early oughts, I read and enjoyed the novel myself. Suffice it to say, the novel’s popularity has been exceptionally long-lived. As of this writing, a remake featuring Cosmo Jarvis and Sanada Hiroyuki is in production. It starred Mifune Toshiro and Richard Chamberlain. Five years later, Paramount Television made a TV miniseries adaptation of the novel. For many Americans, particularly of a certain age, Australian novelist James Clavell’s Shogun: A Novel of Japan was their pop culture introduction to the world of the samurai. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments ALTERED CARBON BOOKS IN ORDER If you are a USA consumer, you have the legal right, under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 to cancel your order within twenty eight (28) working days following your receipt of the goods or the date on which we begin provision of the services. Quellcrist Falconer is back from the dead, they say, and hunting her down for the First Families is a savage young Envoy called Kovacs who's been in storage. The First Families, the corporations and the Yakuza have a stranglehold on everything. Embarked on a journey of implacable retribution for a lost love, Kovacs is blown off course and into a maelstrom of political intrigue and technological mystery as the ghosts of Harlan's World and his own violent past rise to claim their due. On land, from the tropical beaches and swamps of Kossuth to the icy, machine-infested wastes of New Hokkaido the hard won gains of the Quellist revolution have been lost. Try and get above the weather in anything more sophisticated than a helicopter and the Martian orbital platforms will burn you out of the sky. And death doesn't just wait for you in the seas and the skies. An ocean planet with only 5% of its landmass poking above the dangerous and unpredictable seas. Takeshi Kovacs has come home. Home to Harlan's World. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments THE LAST DAYS OF VIDEO BY JEREMY HAWKINS So, Waring enlists the help of his two reluctant employees, wildly sexy Alaura and desperate virgin Jeff-who are almost as nuts as he is-to hatch a series of wild schemes to save their little store and fight against the corporate invaders. But everything changes in his small college town when a bright and shiny Blockbuster Video opens nearby: Clearly, this means war. You've got your Netflix and your Redbox and your DVR, so why deal with VHS tapes or scratched DVDs? Why deal with the grumpy guy at the worn-down independent video store? Well that grumpy guy is Waring Wax, and he's usually too drunk to worry about his declining business at Star Video, let alone his quickly evolving extinction in popular culture. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments NOTKER THE STAMMERER LIFE OF CHARLEMAGNE Why is the figure of Notker, one of the Swiss abbey’s monks, so relevant in the history of medieval sacred music? Gall in the development of medieval chant. We all know about the importance of the Abbey of St. Notker the Stammerer: a music composer or simply a lyricist? Notker the Stammerer was highly fascinated by the world of sounds and cultivated the art of composition in conjunction with his monastic duties.Īs a composer, he gave a valuable contribution to the development of the sequence, a particular genre of Catholic chant. Once he became part of the monastery, Notker acted as a librarian, poet and music composer.īut why was Notker addressed with the epithet “ the Stammerer”?Īccording to Ekkehard, the Benedictine monk had a severe difficulty in articulating words.ĭespite this form of stuttering, he was highly appreciated by the Emperor Charles the Fat to the point that became his occasional counselor. The life of Notker the Stammerer (latin: Balbulus) revolved around the Swiss monastery of Saint Gall where he received a refined education before being ordained as a monk. To answer these questions we’de better start with a quick overview of Notker’s biography. Was he a music composer or just a talented lyricist? 940 – 912) in the music of Medieval Church? What is the role played by the Benedictine monk Notker the Stammerer (c. 0 Comments 5/24/2023 0 Comments THE RED PYRAMID BOOK One annoying aspect of the plot I was reminded of is the way side characters are always sacrificing themselves to allow Sadie and Carter to go on with their quest. I love love love Anubis but have to keep reminding myself that Sadie is twelve! Considering that I feel so creepy when I ship her with anyone! However because of the necessary cuts I would recommend the graphic novel only to those seeking to reread the series if you've never read the Kane Chronicles the written version is a better way to start and will make you laugh like crazy. The graphic novel's story left out much of the fluff and humor of the written version, which I understand was a necessary evil to keep the graphic version as short and condensed as it was. Great art! Sadie's expressions were the perfect mix of apathy and sarcasm. 0 Comments 5/23/2023 0 Comments THE MARK OF THE TALA BY JEFFE KENNEDY “This magnificent fairy tale will captivate you from the beginning to end with a richly detailed fantasy world full of shapeshifters, magic and an exciting romance!” - RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars Perfect for fans of Game of Thrones looking for more romance. Men’s work has evolved and deepened over the last 40 years – and Robert Masters clearly has a handle on the rich history and the continuing evolution of what’s possible for men. Reading the book, it’s clear why Bill would speak so highly of it. “For Boysen: If, after 30 years, I was to write a book, this would be it! Enjoy – Love Bill” To Be A Man – an interview with Robert Augustus Mastersīill Kauth, the co-creator of the New Warrior Training Adventure and co-founder of the ManKind Project sent me Robert Augustus Master’s book “ To Be a Man” early in 2015, signed with an inscription: 0 Comments <<Previous AUTHOR Write something about yourself.
