WHAT WE DO...

SEAWEED CULTIVATION

Seaweed farming is an increasingly important part of the global food system and
provides a range of benefits, including sustainable coastal livelihoods and
economic diversification, food production, export revenue, climate change
mitigation and adaptation, pollution control, and organic fertilizer. With
greater investments of money, technology, and know-how, Sri Lanka could offer
the perfect location to cultivate seaweed either on its own or as integrated
Mari culture, for example with shrimps, mollusks, or sea cucumbers according to
experts.

INTERNATIONAL - EXPORT

Despite the presence of identified seaweed beds in Sri Lanka, export quantities
of seaweed and related products remain relatively low. Ceylon Algae embraces to
enhance the current obstacles in the areas of Insufficient production levels,
lack of proper processing technologies and a limited range of value-added
products that have led to diminished export values.

PROMOTION FOR DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

Ceylon Algae is promoting Seaweeds as a Highly Nutritious Food in Sri Lanka as
already in Asian cuisine, seaweed is consumed in fresh, dried, flaky, and flour
forms and as a vegetable. Notably, red seaweed, commonly known as nori, is rich
in valuable edible protein and is used as an outer wrapping for sushi, either
uncooked or lightly baked. Brown seaweed is widely used in culinary
preparations, while dried Laminaria species of seaweed are incorporated into
various dishes. In addition, Seaweeds can be used in medicine, cosmetics,
textile-dying, animal feed, & fertilizer industries as a necessary factor input.
