And this is another, a duet with the Dan Sultan that strikes a beautifully
tender note. How many of Kelly’s songs have grown on me over time? Heaps.
Spiritual and biblical imagery are another of the recurring themes in Kelly’s
lyrics. Told from the point a view of John Johanna, a man on trial for murder,
who explains that his actions were a result of God telling him what to do, this
track strikes an excellent groove, despite the morbid subject matter. Kelly
referred to this track as a “miracle” and “the most precise song I’ve written”.
One of the constant themes throughout Kelly’s work is regret, and this is an
excellent example, with the narrator wishing he could turn back time to right
his wrongs: “I know my prayer’s in vain / But for a second, I’ll pretend / That
I can start today again”. With tenderness in his voice, this was an interesting
choice for the opener of the “…nothing but a dream” album, given just how mellow
and the track is. The chords, of course, firmly belong to the Hoodoo Gurus’
“Bittersweet”. For this track PK took Cave’s lyrics, at the latter’s behest, and
constructed a downbeat tune which – lyric-wise – is a throwback to old gospel
hymns. Over time, I have come to appreciate it more, but it certainly is not at
the top of my Kelly album list. “Wanted Man” was released to mixed reviews and I
admit that, on first listen, I was slightly unenthused. God’s Hotel (1994,
co-writer Nick Cave).Vika and Linda Bull add the glorious finishing touches to
this simple piano-based tune. The lyrics leave a little to be desired, but the
intent is obvious nonetheless: a man has finally found love. One of the
highlights of the album “Smoke”, this is a classic bluegrass track with typical
Kelly lyrics of pining for a lost love: “But I still miss you/Whenever I turn
out the light/I still miss you/Night after night after night after night”.Uncle
Bill sound like they are having a rollicking good time, and I can confirm that
on the night I saw them they definitely were. Night after night (1999, co-writer
Gerry Hale).And I like the nod to Elvis in the first line: “Are you lonesome
tonight?…” Graham Lee’s pedal steel and Chris Wilson’s harmonica are perfect
country-soul accompaniments. In its own way it is as catchy a tune as he has
written. Somebody’s forgetting somebody (somebody’s letting somebody down)
(1985)Ī beautiful, country-tinged track, with Kelly in a wistful and reflective
mood.A wonderful addition has been the Bull sisters and their incomparable
backing vocals, which are to the fore on this track. In the latter part of his
career, Kelly’s crack band has included guitarist Ash Naylor, bassist Bill
McDonald, pianist Cameron Bruce, drummer Dan Luscombe, as well as his nephew Dan
Kelly on guitar. This track was a definite return to form and had many of the
hallmarks of his earlier work, including the stirring guitar riff and touch of
keyboards. “Life Is Fine” was Kelly’s first solo release of original material in
five years. A love song given perfect weight by the soulful voice of Dan Sultan,
whose interplay with the female backing vocals adds to the groove. This
foot-tapper is one of the highlights. I enjoyed “The Merri Soul Sessions” and
really, one could not help but marvel at the variety of talented singers and
musicians assembled for the project.

   The gorgeous piano intro gives way to hot and dusty imagery Australian

   previous incarnation with The Dots. I have seen him play solo, with his new
   band, with bluegrass bands, with Neil Finn, and with his old band The
   Messengers (particularly at a memorable gig in Bendigo three decades ago).
   From the Botanical Gardens to the Music Bowl, to Hamer Hall, to Festival
   Hall, I have lost count. How many times have I seen him perform live? I

larger fish types we know - monkfish, swordfish, tuna, and cod - are at the
point of collapse. The United Nations forecasts that in 10 years, 50 percent of
fish will be extinct or not worth fishing. As for the whales, they were awesome
not because of their size but because they seemed so aware - so human. Birds
would glide alongside the ship, and the sea was a lovely cacophony of light and
sound. Through it all, Antarctica was breathtakingly beautiful, with icebergs
framed in turquoise and air so clean your lungs would leap to take it in. In
2011 for the first time, as a direct result of Sea Shepherd’s efforts, the
Japanese whaling fleet quit midway through the season, catching only 170 whales
versus its much larger target catch of around 1,035. Our objective was simply to
get in the way and thus stop the killing of threatened and endangered species.
The Japanese media label Sea Shepherd “ecoterrorists,” but the organization has
a strong ethic that means it would never do anything that would injure a human
being. This kind of pursuit and harassment happened on and off for three months
because as long as we kept it up, whales, especially endangered humpbacks, were
not being killed. The harpooners countered with powerful water cannons when our
speedboats tried to get close enough to hurl rancid butter on their decks (which
would spoil the whale meat’s taste) or to entangle and stall their propellers
with chains. Our ship-based helicopter, two Zodiac speedboats, and three Sea
Shepherd vessels began pursuing the harpoon ships through the ice pack. On a
stunning, sunny New Year’s Day 2011, we spotted two Japanese harpoon ships. I
joined up as a ship’s engineer on the 200-foot vessel Steve Irwin, which set
sail out of Hobart, Tasmania, toward Antarctica. So I decided to go over to the
dark side and act. But I knew that in many arenas governments regularly fail to
protect their citizens’ long-term interests. As a businessperson, I also
shuddered at the thought of protesters taking matters into their own hands. But
life demands a balance, and I needed to give and to grow. I was well aware that
my life could be in danger from possible rammings or collisions amid high seas,
gale-force winds, and icebergs. The research is widely seen as an excuse to sell
the subsidized meat to a Japanese public increasingly turning away from it.įor
what it’s worth, I hate conflict, and being in my 40s, I feel fear. Sea Shepherd
vessels use aggressive tactics to stop damage to the sea and its creatures,
especially the slaughter that Japanese whalers continue under a technical
“scientific research” loophole despite a 1986 international moratorium on
commercial whaling. I knew I needed a break, so I put my life on hold for three
months and took on what was to me an enormous personal challenge: I joined the
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s activist campaign against the whale hunt in
Antarctica. However, after 18 years on the corporate ladder in London, I could
hardly even imagine that way of being anymore. Have you noticed that when you

than the building in front of you? When I was in my 20s, nature had been part of
my life, and I had thrived on freedom.
