International Organization for Migration launches an appeal for $7.9 billion in
2024

[Tue, 23 Jan 2024 14:53:03 +0300]

GENEVA January 23. 2024 (Saba) - The International Organization for Migration
launched its first annual global appeal to raise $7.9 billion in 2024 to address
the increasing challenges posed by population movements.

According to Agence France-Presse, the Director-General of the United Nations
agency, Amy Pope, said in a statement that the funding is necessary to “save
lives, protect people who are displaced, find solutions to displacement, and
facilitate safe corridors for regular migration.”

Pope emphasized that "irregular and forced migration has reached unprecedented
levels, and the challenges we face are becoming more complex."

She continued, "The evidence is overwhelming that migration, when well managed,
is a major contributor to global prosperity and progress," stressing, "We are at
a critical moment and we have launched this call to help fulfill this promise."

Pope, who took office in October to become the first woman to head the agency,
stressed that "we can and must do more."

The organization indicated that funding its appeal will allow it to serve
approximately 140 million people, including those displaced within their
countries and the communities that receive them.

It is noteworthy that the International Organization for Migration was
established more than 70 years ago, but it became a UN agency in 2016, carrying
out a parallel operation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees,
albeit smaller in size.
