On January 1, 2023, Mr. Toshiaki Rokunohe, Business Management Division,
Transmission & Distribution Systems Division, Power Grids Business Unit, was
promoted to fellow, the highest rank of membership in the IEEE*, the world's
largest academic research and technical standards organization for electrical
and information engineering. Fellow is a highly prestigious designation given to
members who have made distinguished achievements and revolutionary changes in
their field, and is recognized as a sign of mastery of their studies. Only about
2% of the more than 400,000 IEEE members are eligible, and only less than 0.1%
of voting members are promoted each year.

Mr. Rokunohe succeeded in commercializing the world's first SF6 gas-free 72kV
gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) in 2005. In order to reduce the use of SF6 gas,
which has excellent insulation and quenching properties but has a high global
warming potential, he achieved SF6 gas-free in the same footprint as
conventional equipment using SF6 gas by applying a hybrid solid/gas insulation
structure, establishing an air insulation/interrupting design method, and
developing a pressurized air disconnect device.

Furthermore, he participated in the Kii-Suido HVDC project and was involved in
the development of the world's first DC GIS for HVDC in 1998. He established the
foundation for compact design technology that ensures high insulation
reliability by devising a structure to control and capture the DC-specific
behavior of particles and verifying its performance through full-scale prototype
model to realize detoxification of particles in the GIS, which had been a
challenge for HVDC GIS.

This time, these efforts were recognized as "contributions to eco-friendly
compact and reliable high-voltage equipment" and the promotion to fellow was
approved.

I am very honored to receive the prestigious award of IEEE Fellow from the IEEE,
which is an international recognition of the research and development that I
have been engaged in. I sincerely appreciate my seniors who have guided and
supported me, as well as all those who have helped my work. I intend to
contribute to our business in the future by applying this knowledge to the
implementation of Hitachi Energy products in Japan, encouraged by this award.

Congratulations, Rokunohe-san, on your promotion to IEEE Fellow.

This award is in recognition of his pioneering efforts in two technologies that
have now become means of solving social issues around the world: DC GIS for HVDC
systems that enable the implementation of renewable energy and power
flexibility, and compact and highly reliable SF6 gas-free GIS using VCB*. The
recognition as a pioneer in these fields is the result of Rokunohe-san's long
years of dedication, both in the research center and in the business division.
The appointment as IEEE Fellow is the first time in the long history of
Hitachi's T&D. We, who have been involved in the business together, are
extremely happy and proud of this achievement. I look forward to his continued
success both inside and outside the company.
