The first 13 Israeli hostages were freed from Hamas captivity Friday as part of
the captive exchange deal between Israel and Hamas; dozens of Palestinian women
and teenagers who were held in Israeli prisons were being released in exchange,
according to a spokesperson for the foreign ministry of Qatar. Separately, Hamas
also released ten Thai nationals and one Filipino national who had been held
hostage, according to Thai and Philippine officials. A pause in fighting in Gaza
went into effect Friday morning — the first respite in seven weeks of war — as
aid trucks entered the Palestinian enclave. Fifty Israeli hostages are expected
to be freed over the four-day pause in fighting in exchange for 150 Palestinian
prisoners in Israel under the agreement.

HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW:

Hamas is expected to release women and children held in Gaza, and Israel is due
to release women and teenagers held in Israeli prisons. Families of the more
than 200 hostages held by militants have raised pressure in Israel for their
release. Israel has said that for every 10 hostages released after the first 50,
the pause in fighting would be extended for an additional day.
A spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry said 39 Palestinians had been
released from an Israeli prison in the West Bank shortly after Hamas began to
release 13 hostages. However, the International Committee of the Red Cross said
it facilitated the release of 33 prisoners.
The Israeli military warned Gaza residents that “the war is not over yet,” in an
online video ahead of the start time of the temporary pause early Friday. Israel
also dropped leaflets in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis warning that moving to the
north, from where hundreds of thousands have fled the heaviest fighting, was
“forbidden.”
More than 13,300 people have been killed in Gaza and 35,180 wounded, according
to the Gaza Health Ministry’s first official toll update since Nov. 10, when it
said it could no longer keep count because of the intensity of fighting in the
enclave and communications breakdowns. At least 1,200 people were killed in
Israel in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.

ISRAEL-GAZA WAR

Israel’s military continued combat operations across the Gaza Strip, striking
major cities in the south and engaging in “intense fighting” with Hamas
militants in two key regions in the north, a government spokesman said.

Hostages: More than 100 hostages held in the Gaza Strip have been released.
Here’s what we know about the hostages released by Hamas so far.

Oct. 7 attack: Hamas spent more than a year planning its historic assault on
Israel. A Post video analysis shows how Hamas exploited vulnerabilities created
by Israel’s reliance on technology at the “Iron Wall” to carry out the deadliest
attack in Israel’s history. Traders earned millions anticipating the Oct. 7
Hamas attack, a new study found.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict: The Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has a complicated
history. Understand what’s behind the Israel-Gaza war and see the history of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
