POLL: VOTERS SAY CALIFORNIA’S BUDGET DEFICIT SERIOUS PROBLEM

A recent poll conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and
co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times revealed that half of California
registered voters view the state’s budget deficit as an “extremely serious”
problem. Additionally, 57% of voters believe that the state is headed in the
wrong direction.


IMPACT OF BUDGET DEFICIT ON STATE REVENUES

The state budget heavily relies on capital gains taxes paid by California’s
highest earners, making state revenues prone to volatility in the stock market.
Lower-than-expected revenues, delayed tax deadlines, and overspending based on
inaccurate budget projections have contributed to California’s grim financial
picture.

GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed declaring a budget emergency to dip into the
state’s rainy day reserves, cutting $8.5 billion in spending from various
programs, and reconsidering a minimum wage increase for healthcare workers as
part of his plan to address the deficit.
