A WASHINGTON, DC restaurant is making a major change and adding an automatic
surcharge to all orders.

Hill East Burger has added a 20 percent surcharge to patrons' checks in response
to a new law raising wages for restaurant workers.

Hill East Burger is adding a service charge

The burger restaurant said it applies the charge so it can better afford to pay
its staff $10-$15 an hour rather than the industry average of $6.

"We pay base wages to front-of-house staff which are 2-3x DC’s industry-standard
tipped minimum wage, depending on the role worked," Hill East Burger explained
on its website.

It also said its policy allows it to adapt to a recently passed Washington, DC
initiative which will slowly phase out the city's tipped minimum wage of $5.35
per hour.

"We’re also adapting to the ‘new world’ created by Initiative 82, which the DC
public passed in 2022 in an effort to shift restaurants away from tip-based
compensation," Hill East Burger added.

POPULAR RESTAURANT CHAIN AND HOOTERS RIVAL ABRUPTLY CLOSES DOWN FOR GOOD

Currently, bars and restaurants can pay waitstaff a base wage far lower than the
$16.10 city minimum wage, so long as tips make up the difference.

Yet, starting on July 1, the wage will go up to $8.00, and it will continue to
rise every year until it matches the new minimum wage of $17.00 in 2027.

Hill East Burger will distribute 10 percent of the surcharge to staff and keep
the other 10 percent to be better able to afford the increasing wages.

Hill East Burger is still encouraging customers to tip if they can.

MORE SERVICE CHARGES LIKELY

Most D.C. establishments are likely to add fees as the wage creeps up, according
to a recent study conducted by The Employees Policy Institute.

A recent survey found 70 percent of restaurant operators intend on adding a
surcharge.

The study, which quizzed 105 respondents, also showed that 80 percent of
respondents expected to raise menu prices due to the hike by 2027.

At least 72 percent also said they would reduce staff or consolidate positions
by 2027.

Meat lovers upset by the surcharge may be interested in new, less expensive
options at fast food chains.

Jack in the Box recently announced two new burgers with special patties.

Both the new All American Ribeye Steakhouse Burger and Bacon All American Ribeye
Steakhouse Burger are made with ribeye beef, which is usually only reserved for
expensive steaks.

"Steakhouse quality but make it Jack," Jack in the Box put in the menu
description.

The burgers are available for a limited time.

Pizza Hut is also adding a special meat filling to two new products.

Customers can now order both the Cheesesteak Pizza and Cheesesteak Melt.

The pizza chain said both new items are "cheesesteak-inspired" using sirloin
steak strips - a never-before-used ingredient at Pizza Hut.

“Using top-quality ingredients, these new Cheesesteak offerings deliver a unique
taste profile with great value. Whether in our classic pizza form or the crispy
handheld Melts, our new grilled sirloin steak is a must try," said Lindsay
Morgan, chief marketing officer at Pizza Hut U.S.

The Cheesesteak Pizza has alfredo sauce, green bell peppers, onion, and parmesan
oregano while the Cheesesteak Melt includes butter and can be dipped into a
ranch sauce.

The pizza price starts at $13.99 and the melt has a starting price of $6.99.

Both new meals will be sold at participating Pizza Hut locations only for a
limited time.

Prices will vary by location.
