pofesh * Blog FIRE WATCH BY CONNIE WILLIS 5/30/2023 0 Comments And when Michael, Merope, and Polly finally get to World War II, things just get worse. And seventeen-year-old Colin Templer, who has a major crush on Polly, is determined to go to the Crusades so that he can “catch up” to her in age.īut now the time-travel lab is suddenly canceling assignments for no apparent reason and switching around everyone’s schedules. Polly Churchill’s next assignment will be as a shopgirl in the middle of London’s Blitz. Dunworthy, into letting her go to VE Day. Merope Ward is coping with a bunch of bratty 1940 evacuees and trying to talk her thesis adviser, Mr. Michael Davies is prepping to go to Pearl Harbor. Scores of time-traveling historians are being sent into the past, to destinations including the American Civil War and the attack on the World Trade Center. Publication date: February / October 2010 0 Comments THE REINTEGRATORS BY WILL WEISSER 5/30/2023 0 Comments Each of the main characters goes through a significant arc and ends up with a rather different outlook than they had at the beginning of the novel. I think Hunter in particular is extremely well developed, with his autism handled sensitively and sympathetically. The world and its characters are well thought out – the world building takes the interesting approach of hinting at what’s going on and letting you fill in the blanks. I found myself very much reminded of Horizon: Zero Dawn (and occasionally The Matrix) throughout the novel, and if you enjoyed the story of that game then this is definitely one for you. is thoroughly explored and makes for interesting reading. The Strand is a great concept and I have difficulty doing it justice here, but its ability to set traps, shape-shift into giant monsters roaming the land, etc. The world is partially covered in The Strand – living metal inhabited by seemingly malevolent AIs who are frequently at war with humans and one another. What a great start to 2018! Ankaran Immersion is a Cyberpunk adventure set in an intriguing post-Apocalyptic future. Not only is the Tome and Tankard the first publication to review ANKARAN IMMERSION, but the book got on the right side of Wol from the very beginning and didn’t let up: 0 Comments DON WINSLOW KINGS OF COOL 5/30/2023 0 Comments The walk-ons who pop up just long enough to get caught in the crossfire are too interchangeable for tears, and not even Chon’s deployment to Afghanistan and his encounter with a bomb are cause for alarm. Since fans know that Ben and Chon and their childhood friend O-for-Ophelia will still be around to peddle primo product in Savages, The Association’s threats don’t carry the menace they would outside the wonderful world of prequels, and readers are free to enjoy the proceedings as deliriously overgalvanized, intermittently hilarious ritual. Quick as a sentence fragment, Winslow is piling on the violence, the flashbacks to an earlier generation of Southern California surfers and hippies, and the one-word paragraphs, as he makes a strong bid for the James Ellroy Award for Self-Indulgent Prose. Chon is not the person to take this challenge lying down, and soon he’s struck preemptively at a couple of Association minnows he unwisely leaves alive-a decision that acts like the starting gun at a marathon. So successful is their business, in fact, that Duane Crowe, of The Association, pays Ben a visit gently suggesting that they either submit a monthly charge to the established network of importers or take their business elsewhere. The year 2005 finds Ben Leonard and his buddy Chon doing what they do best: helping Orange County get high on Ben’s custom-bred hydroponic grass. Winslow offers a prequel for his drug-war epic Savages (2010). 0 Comments THE OLD DRIFT BOOK 5/30/2023 0 Comments On the face of it, the form and storytelling are familiar, recalling many of the sweeping, colonial narratives authored in decades past in the global north. Stylistically, the novel is something of a Trojan horse. Over its course we meet, among many others, blind British tennis player Agnes who marries across the colour bar, a philandering doctor intent on finding a vaccine for AIDs, the Zambian astronaut who never was, and a woman covered in hair. Similar in scope to The Eighth Life, which R also enjoyed, the novel begins in 1904 with a small pioneer settlement near Victoria Falls, and traces how the connections and traumas forged in that messy collision of people ricochet down the generations. Spanning more than a century, a large cast of characters and numerous countries, The Old Drift is a proudly ambitious book. Their favourite read not featured on my list was The Old Drift by Zambian author Namwali Serpell. Having been keen to expand their horizons, they had embarked on an international quest, using the List on this blog as a source of ideas and supplementing these with their own discoveries when they felt like it or didn’t like my choices (the best way to use this website, if you ask me). Like many over the past couple of years, they’d had a tough time and found solace in reading. 0 Comments MADE IN LOS ANGELES BY MŒBIUS 5/30/2023 0 Comments Education & FellowshipsĪfter graduating from David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA at the top of his class, Dr. This detailed knowledge of facial aesthetics and underlying facial anatomy has made him one of the most sought-after facial paralysis surgeons in the world.Īs such, he has been featured in The New York Times, the Oprah Winfrey Show, People magazine, Discovery Health, and The Doctors television show, among others, for his distinct expertise in the field. Large chronological gaps exist, frustratingly for the reader, because black voices have simply not been systematically recorded throughout history. Starting from Roman times, the book is a compelling chronicle of the lives of black Tudors, Georgians, Victorians, and soldiers in the first and second world wars. He argues that "the denial and avowal of black British history, even in the face of mounting documentary and archeological evidence, is not just a consequence of racism but a feature of racism." The thesis running throughout the book is that black Britons have been systematically excluded from British history. The book accompanies a superb BBC Two documentary, which is much more crowd-pleasing in tone. The refrain David heard was the same that I heard: "Go back to where you came from." "Black and British" is a detailed rebuttal of the racist lie that black people do not belong in Britain. Growing up in Britain in the 1970s, I was subjected to the same type of racism as this book's author, David Olusoga. 0 Comments SUMMARY OF MARCH BY GERALDINE BROOKS 5/30/2023 0 Comments In 2019, Georgetown Art History graduate student Theo Northam discovers a portrait of a horse in a “FREE” pile outside his neighbor’s house. For the reader, Jarret and Lexington’s story unfolds chronologically and in extensive detail, thus the reader is privy to information these modern researchers never uncover long before it even occurs to them to consider looking. Jess and Theo gradually uncover fragmented elements of Lexington’s story, collecting them together in hopes of gaining a greater understanding of his history. Jarret’s story spans 25 years, Martha Jackson’s story encompasses two years, and Theo and Jess’s story takes place over the course of a single year. Horse is structured to encompass three separate storylines, set in the 1850s, 1950s, and 2019. The chapters about the enslaved character Jarret adhere to the historical custom of placing the enslaver’s last name before the enslaved person’s first name, i.e. It also depicts animal neglect and abuse. This guide follows the 2022 first edition hardcover copy of the novel.Ĭontent Warning: Horse contains depictions of enslavement and racism toward Black people, both historically and in the present, including racially-motivated violence and the use of racial slurs. 0 Comments TREASURE ISLAND STEVENSON 5/30/2023 0 Comments Learn about the major environmental problems facing our planet and what can be done about them! Such views, expressed in the Old Testament as well as in the Gospels, continue to influence the direction of Western culture to the present day. Conquering peripheral tribes, such as the Hebrews, introduced a patriarchal, death-centered system (symbolized by the blade) that valued aggression and dominance and denigrated earlier faith in the Goddess. Minoan Crete marks the last instance of this social and religious organizational pattern. Religion celebrated life and nature, with the Goddess (symbolized by the chalice) being the primary figure of worship. "Neolithic art and funerary practices demonstrate that women were the equals of men. 0 Comments THE SHACK WILLIAM P YOUNG BOOK REVIEW 5/29/2023 0 Comments That’s to be expected when you have people like Eugene Peterson making statements such as, “This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” did for his. The movie itself is set to be released in 2017, but the hype and anticipation has already started to build. Recently the trailer for the movie based on Young’s book was released. The book originally written as a Christmas gift for a family has sold over 20-million copies and become one of the top 70 books in the history of printed books. It ascended to the top of the best-selling lists (including the New York Times and Amazon), and like many successful books often do, it has now morphed into a movie. In 2008, William Paul Young wrote a book titled The Shack that was instantly a best-seller. 0 Comments <<Previous AUTHOR Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
