COFFEE NOIR BLACK BROWN KOREAN MOVIE

In order to make a living, he works as a chauffeur, but is determined to sell
the shop as soon as possible but ensuring he gets the highest amount for it.
Shin Ha-kyun plays an entrepreneur who runs a DVD shop in a once-prospering but
now somewhat dead shopping district. 7" works well combining elements of a
comedic nature with more thrilling moments. Indeed, the concept of a film
largely set in a DVD room sounded like an intriguing one.Īlthough it didn't
quite deliver in the same way as a film called "Karaoke Crazies" that was
released in June and predominately set in a Karaoke bar, tonally "Room No.
Therefore, it seemed like there was enough strong pedigree involved to warrant
attention. Directed by Lee Yong-Seung who made the impressive "10 Minutes," it
was produced by Myung Films headed by influential film producer Sim Jae-myung.
The one I was most eager to see was "Room No. I certainly wasn't able to see all
that many, but from the films I saw with the exception of one, it was a stronger
year for Korean films at the festival in terms of world premieres. In the 21st
edition, while there were some films of the non-Korean variety I was keen on
seeing such as the "Psycho" documentary "78/52" and the acclaimed horror film
"Raw," for the first time I was adamant on catching Korean genre films at

commemorates Welles’ iconic 1958 filming.A scene from "Coffee Noir: Black Brown"

_ In recent years I have been inclined to pick non-Korean films at the Bucheon
International Film Festival (BIFAN) because the selection of foreign films
tended to be stronger. Touch of Evil’s famous opening sequence, which was shot
in one long continuous take, was filmed in the streets and alleys surrounding
the Samesun, though the area has changed considerably in the ensuing years and
is largely unrecognizable from its on-screen stint. Originally built in 1904,
the neo-Italianate columned structure was formerly known as the St. That
building is no longer standing but the neighboring property, from which Susan is
spied upon, remains intact and is now a hostel known as Samesun Venice Beach. In
the dark tale of a narcotics officer’s honeymoon gone wrong, newlyweds Susan

Welles’ 1958 film noir Touch of Evil was largely shot on location in Venice

historic studio. Paramount Pictures expanded its studio space in the late 80s
and early 90s, annexed Marathon Street which used to run in front of it, and
acquired several acres of land, resulting in the Bronson Gate now being located
within the walls of the lot.

When Norma arrives at the gate, a guard tries to bar her entrance, to which she
says, “Without me, there wouldn’t be any Paramount Studio!” Though many fans
mistakenly snap photographs of the Melrose Gate that now stands at the lot’s
entrance, in actuality it was the Bronson Gate, which formerly marked the front
of the property, where Norma admonished the guard. In a last ditch effort to
save her career, Norma heads to Paramount Pictures to speak with Cecil B.

life, also masked as Blair General Hospital in the 1960s television series Dr.

Fans can catch a glimpse of it by taking the Sony Pictures Studio Tour, or from
outside the gates on Culver Boulevard near where it intersects La Salle Avenue.
Much of the MGM backlot was sold off in the 70s, but thankfully, the Art
Deco-style Thalberg Building, which was built in 1938, still stands. At the time
of filming, the 185-acre studio belonged to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The rear side
of the Irving Thalberg Building at Sony Pictures Studios was used as the
exterior of the hospital in the movie. After their first attempt fails, Nick
winds up in Blair General Hospital. Who can forget the iconic image of a
turbaned Lana Turner donning a white crop top and shorts while fiddling with a
tube of lipstick at the beginning of The Postman Always Rings Twice? Frank
Chambers (John Garfield) and Lana’s sultry Cora Smith plot to kill Cora’s
husband, Nick (Cecil Kellaway), in the 1946 film.

Blosser sees Docebo, Seismic, and Litmos as WorkRamp’s top rivals, with Seismic
drawing particular ire over its acquisition of training platform Lessonly last
August.īlosser attributes the broader industry’s growth to an increased desire
for companies to attract, develop, and retain talent. “ we released a new

COCKPIT BOEING 777 300ER

1/17/2024

Once checked in, I headed through security using my Clear membership and went to
the American Express Centurion Lounge, which is near Gate B22 in Terminal 4 at
Sky Harbor Airport. I also arrived three hours prior to the scheduled departure.

The check-in process was quick and easy as this is the only flight that British
Airways operates out of Phoenix, and I did not wait more than five minutes. In
Phoenix, there are two agent stations for priority passengers in premium cabins
or with elite status, and three for those in economy. I have Platinum status on
American Airlines, which gives me Oneworld Sapphire status. The priority
check-in desk can be used if you hold elite status on British Airways or a
Oneworld alliance partner. Premium economy tickets do get an extra bag
allowance, so you could bring a cabin bag plus a personal item on board and
check up to two additional bags of up to 23 kilograms (51 pounds) for free.
Normally I would not check a bag, but I packed my medium-size Away suitcase
because London was not my final destination and I was going on an extended trip.

I was able to check in for my flight to London using the British Airways app,
but was not issued a boarding pass pending a passport check, so I stopped by the
British Airways priority desk at the airport to claim my boarding pass and check
my bag. I always like to check in for flights online or using the airline's app
on my phone. It currently shows no award availability on the British Airways leg
from London to Phoenix in October, but plenty of space in the opposite direction
in economy and premium economy.Ĭhecking in to premium economy on British Airways
I ran a few searches outside of the peak summer travel period. It's easier if
you have flexible dates, use the search-by-month tool and look at off-peak days.
If you have British Airways Avios (or can convert credit card points to Avios),
you can search for award availability on the British Airways website if you'd
prefer to book your ticket as an award. I felt it was worth it to gain more
space and upgraded service. I have flown this route in economy a handful of
times, and a few years ago, I upgraded at the check-in desk at Heathrow and paid
300 British pounds (about $385) to upgrade one-way into premium economy for the
10 1/2-hour flight back to Phoenix. I also always price out a one-way ticket
versus a round-trip, just to see all my options, and find that British Airways
often prices one-way tickets the same as round-trips. I booked 30 days out from
my departure and paid $2,994.35, which was $1,290 more than the economy fare for
the same dates. The premium economy fares for this route can range from $2,200
to over $4,000 round-trip.

The seats are comparable in size to domestic first-class recliners.įor the
Phoenix-to-London route on British Airways, the economy prices tend to be around
$1,200-$1,400 round-trip, but I have seen them over $2,000 on some dates.

I find I can relax more easily in premium economy, which offers more space and
footrests. How to book premium economy on British Airwaysīefore I decide which
cabin to book on any route, I price out my preferred dates in economy and then
also in premium economy - especially if it's an overnight flight and I want to
sleep. Here's what British Airways premium economy is like and whether it's
worth it. On the return, it departs London at 2:40 p.m. Kennedy International
Airport (JFK), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Chicago's O’Hare
International Airport (ORD), Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport
(CVG) and Nashville International Airport (BNA).īritish Airways operates several
types of long-haul aircraft, but I took a flight from Phoenix to London's
Heathrow Airport (LHR) operated by a Boeing 777-300ER which departs at 7:30 p.m.
gateways at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Phoenix Sky Harbor
International Airport (PHX), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Newark
Liberty International Airport (EWR), New York’s John F. The product is on all
the airline's long-haul aircraft, so travelers (with one "l" here in the U.S.)
will find it on most of the airline's major international routes, including to
the carrier's U.S. British Airways launched its premium economy cabins and
service way back in 2000, dubbing it World Traveller Plus.

VINTAGE CAST IRON BOOKENDS

1/17/2024

Wapak pans with this style logo were produced between 19. “The gray book” or
Early American Cast Iron Holloware by Pennsylvania collector John Tyler
documents some of the oldest cast iron you’ll find anywhere, with some pieces
dating back as far as the mid-1600s. The Book of Wagner & Griswold, which is
referred to as “the red book.” In addition to Wagner and Griswold, this volume
dives into the history of pieces produced by Lodge, Vollrath, Excelsior, and
Martin. This expansive guide covers everything from skillets and Dutch ovens to
coffee grinders and teapots produced by Griswold and Wagner, as well as brands
like Wapak and Favorite. The Book of Griswold & Wagner, also known as “the blue
book,” contains valuable information and more than 1,000 photographs that can
assist in identifying and dating many obscure cast-iron pieces. If you’re an
avid cast iron enthusiast, odds are you’re familiar with Schiffer Publishing’s
collection of resourceful cast iron guides. Having a collection of books to
reference at the ready is an invaluable tool in identifying cast iron. A Wapak
pan sporting an Indian head logo was made between 19 and is highly collectible
STOCK YOUR BOOKSHELF From scouring the Internet to hitting the books, these are
the resources that have given us the most success. Here at Southern Cast Iron,
readers routinely ask us for advice on how to identify their vintage and
unmarked cast iron, and while it’s impossible to provide a definitive guide on
identifying every maker, there are plenty of tools to help you uncover the
mystery behind your pan.

“A gate mark looks like a slash and was a by-product of older iron casting
methods,” he explains. Robert says a quick way to determine if the pan is early
or pre-20th century is to look for a gate mark on the bottom side. For instance,
Lodge’s iconic egg logo was created in 1973, so you can guarantee any pan that
simply has the name “Lodge” carved into the back is at least more than 45 years
old. If your vintage pan does happen to have a brand label, comparing its logo
design and font to other pans of the same brand can help give you an idea of
when it was made. “If there are markings discernible, the typeface used could be
a dead giveaway or at least point you in the right direction.” He also advises
those looking to identify vintage cast iron to take a close look at the helper
handle or tab design (if the pan has them), at the position and design of the
heat ring on the bottom, and at the pour spouts to determine the maker. “I’ll
look at the shape of the handle’s hole, if there is one, the contours of the top
and bottom, and if there are any raised or incised numbers or general markings,”
Robert says. “Typically, I will look at the handle first,” says Robert
Kellermann, who is a descendant of Joseph Lodge, founder of Lodge Cast Iron, and
the company’s primary source for identifying vintage or otherwise unmarked cast
iron. When you find a cast-iron pan whose provenance is unclear, there are
certain characteristics that will clue you in to its maker and age. Oftentimes,
the letters and numbers you’ll find on the bottom of a vintage pan denote a
pattern number or correspond to a particular cooking surface on a stove the pan
might’ve been sold with, and unusual notches could be a maker’s mark
incorporated into the piece to identify the actual person who crafted it.

For example, a Wagner skillet made to sell in a specific store would forgo the
Wagner label and rely on its signature characteristics for brand identification.
Each brand had a well-conceived signature design, but for many brands of
yesteryear, where consistency ended and mystery unfolded was with markings.Ī
skillet’s markings could range from the company’s name to a set of cryptic
letters and numbers to mysterious notches to nothing at all, and much of the
inconsistency was a result of marketing. They made glassy smooth interiors,
handles molded to seamlessly fit into a gripped hand, and walls and pour spouts
whose curvature was perfected down to minute angles. The makers of today’s
vintage cast iron were meticulously detailed craftsmen. A careful look at the
logo on a vintage pan-if it has one-can help determine its age.

UNITY ONE GANG INTERVENTION

1/17/2024

Now, a first-of-its-kind federal-philanthropic initiative is enabling APUU and
other CVI organizations across the country to expand our work.

Still, as a small nonprofit operating on a tiny budget, we have always been
aware that with more resources, we could have far greater impact. We see it in
our work every day, every time we intervene in circumstances to ensure our youth
can become the thriving adults they could be. Our staff is made up of local
residents with personal experience on the frontlines of violence - people who,
like the drafters of the 1992 treaty, have deep knowledge of our communities and
a firsthand understanding of what drives violent crime and what it takes to
prevent it.Ĭommunity violence intervention (CVI) is challenging, complex,
time-intensive, and sometimes painful-but more importantly, it is effective. Our
mission is to intervene in and stop gang and other forms of community violence,
as well as to provide support to young people vulnerable to becoming
perpetrators or victims of violent crime. Today, the legacy of the Watts peace
treaty lives on in our work at Advocates for Peace and Urban Unity (APUU). But
the chief explanation for the eventual uptick of violence in Watts is that, for
all the attention the treaty’s success received, policy makers never really
provided the material resources to address the root causes of violent crime. Its
dissolution is partially attributable to the fading of connections between the
1992 treaty’s original participants. Drive-by shootings fell by nearly 50
percent from 1991 to 1992, and gang-related homicides by 62 percent.” These
trends continued for years. While violence engulfed much of the city, Watts
remained largely peaceful there were few deaths in the area during the uprising,
and none were gang-related.Īccording to scholar Elizabeth Hinton, in the two
months immediately following the truce, “Only four people were killed, down from
twenty-two during the same period in 1991. Given the LAPD’s brutal tactics in
Watts, their presence did more harm than good - police violence was seen as a
second front in the devastating war.ĭespite the skepticism, the peace treaty
demonstrated its power just days after it was signed, when the Rodney King
verdict sparked the LA uprising. The police had virtually no understanding, or
desire to understand, the community or the sources of the violence within it. I
think we were cynical,” LA District Attorney George Gascón (who was a member of
the LAPD in 1992) recently said. “We really didn’t really believe that it was
going to work.

In brokering, writing, and enforcing the 1992 peace treaty, they took matters
into their own hands. Fed up with watching their family members, friends, and
neighbors die in an unending cycle of shootings and reprisals, a group of active
and former gang members realized that they were the only people equipped to stop
the violence in Watts. The Watts peace treaty was a community-based solution to
a community-based problem-a problem to which outsiders were largely indifferent.
The treaty also included a United Black Community Code, a list of guidelines
encouraging, among other things, education programs respectful treatment of
rivals the pooling of resources for cultural events a food bank and a hardship
fund. In April 1992, leaders from the Grape Street Crips PJ Watts Crips Bounty
Hunter Bloods and Hacienda Village Bloods met at a local mosque to sign a peace
treaty that included a ceasefire arrangement and a prohibition on drive-bys and
random attacks. Thirty years ago-following decades of gang war that had killed
thousands and traumatized countless others-the Crips and the Bloods in Watts
agreed to a truce.
