Dr. Deere's wisdom, warm and digestable scholarship and transparency all
packaged up in a neat Zondervan book/bundle for a song via Amazon.com; get a
copy ASAP and go on a private retreat to get back to 1st century Christian
Basics 101: hearing God speak NOW 24/7 as your Coach, Guide, and Mentor. Can't
stop reading and rereading this awesome how-to practical guide on escaping
"yellowed pages" of Bible theory to reliving the book of Acts in the now.
Pastor/professor Deere's been on both sides; former prof at
fundamentalist/cessationalist Dallas Seminary; now living/experiencing the
supernatural presence and power of An Awesome God who won't be boxed up into
private quiet times and 2-3 hours on week-ends.
Deere's greatness is his balance; savvy scholarship emphasizing authority of
Scripture but warm application showing you how experience/know God as The Coach
who directs his kids in the game of life by a myriad of methods formerly viewed
as the exclusive property of 1st Century (book of Acts) Christianity.
Jack gives you all the stuff you need to activate; coupled with hints, tips,
warnings, dangers and pitfalls; shows how to be winsome and positive and come
off not looking wild, weird, strange, and armed/dangerous to any local church
fellowship.
After you get it down pat enough to move on; see also his sequels also available

Lots of excellent advice for incorporating the gifts of the Spirit into your
life and ministry. Here's an example:
In the New Testament, the government of the local church was given to the elders
of that church, not to itinerant prophets, nor to the prophets within that
church. Paul wrote, “The elders who direct the affairs of the church are worthy
of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching (1 Tim.
5:17). There are two groups in the church that continually cause problems for
the leadership of the church. One group is the prophetic people. Because they
frequently have visions, dreams, and unusual impressions, they may have a
tendency to think they know more than the leadership of the church. Some get
offended when the leadership doesn’t listen to them. They assume they know
better what the Lord wants for the church. The other group that frequently
causes difficulty is the intercessors. Intercessors are people whose primary
ministry is to pray. They spend long hours in prayer—frequently more than anyone
else in the church. Sometimes this makes them feel more spiritual than the
leadership, and they resent not having a significant say in the affairs of the
church. Both of these groups, the prophets and the intercessors, are required by
God to submit to the elders.

I wish I could find the "Surprised By The Voice Of God" 2-set cassette tape
messages in CD or even DVD format. On the second tape, Jack Deere talks about
some very well-documented, eye-witness accounts of men literally hearing from
God, prophesying, the prophesies coming to pass, all either during or around the
time of the Reformation, WELL after the Holy Bible was written...and godly
people are STILL hearing from God in everyday life. Why haven't we heard these
stories before, you may ask? Well, one example is that in an early publication
of a particular book that gave very detailed information on people who heard
from God and prophesied and so forth...When that publication was reprinted and
there was commentary on it, not only had some of the ACTUAL TEXT purposely
changed, but the commentary was debunking the original text based on personal
bias and not Scripture, indicating it wasn't really what it purported to be or
that the people were mistaken as to what actually occurred. To some extent, Dr.
Deere (a former naysayer of God speaking today and the gifts of the Holy Spirit
not being for today himself) revealed an actual conspiracy against Biblical
declarations of God speaking and the Holy Spirit moving today as reported in
Biblical times. He brings up two really good questions that there is ZERO
Biblical answer for: WHEN did God stop speaking and the gifts of the Holy Spirit
stop in Scripture? And if the believers in Bible times NEEDED the voice of God
and the gifts of the Holy Spirit for their daily lives, then why don't we as
believers today? Another really good point addressed: The Bible tells us what is
sin, but the Bible does not tell us who in our lives struggles with certain sin
who we can lovingly minister freedom to, as well as other issues that aren't
even sin in a person's life, but needs ministry nonetheless. He makes it very
clear that God speaks apart from the Bible today, BUT NEVER IN CONTRADICTION TO
THE BIBLE. The Bible is STILL THE STANDARD to test what we believe God is saying
to us.
All this stated, I don't know much about Dr. Jack Deere's theology other than
what I've heard on these two cassettes and 3 CDs I've heard of his, so this
review is strictly on the 2 cassettes...and I HIGHLY recommend you get your
hands on a cassette player or boom box with a cassette player and GET THESE
CASSETTE TAPES!

I am blessed by Jack Deere's candor and openness in this book. He shares from
his own experience and he is willing to help us to see the pitfalls of life in
the Spirit, but at the same time, help us to realize that a relationship with
the LORD is central, not just the words in the Bible. An excellent book that I
would highly recommend for anyone who is looking to find greater life in their
relationship to God.
