Since its inception, WSS has personally managed or installed over 15,000 feet of TrapBag, BarrierForce Geotextile Bags, and Flint Geotubes. Installation locations include the East Coast Shoreline (Atlantic Ocean) and the Intercoastal Waterway. Coastal zones host 45% of the world's population, making protection against the erosive effects of storms and sea-level rise all the more crucial. There are a few options for protecting waterfront property. One of the best options for "holding the line" is an armored dune. Armored dunes and protective walls are ideal for water protection and facing the challenges associated with sea-level rise. This approach entails burying a protective structure beneath a sand dune, leaving the surrounding ecosystem unharmed and thriving. Armored dunes are designed and engineered to withstand powerful Nor'easters, King Tides, tropical storms, and hurricanes. You may lose the sand on top of the structure, but the remaining structures such as infinity pools, gazebos, and houses remain protected. The Dune Core permits are applicable for those beachfront property owners that have lost the protective dune habitat that once provided storm protection and yet cannot obtain a permit for a seawall. Dune Core permits are an "armored dune" with a large, engineered geotextile system that is installed and buried under a new dune system. The dune is reconstructed and is suitable for plantings and sea turtle nesting. WSS has successfully obtained Sand-Filled Dune Core permits under the State of Florida, 62B-56B for multiple customers. ADVANTAGES OF A DUNE CORE "ARMORED DUNE" VS. SEAWALL: * Dune cores must be covered with a minimum of 3-feet of sand which looks like any other dune and is aesthetically pleasing, except it is fortified with 2,700 tons of sand wrapped below to stop most direct force hurricanes. * Dune cores are "turtle-friendly" since they have to be maintained with 3-feet of sand, seawalls are not required to be covered, and offer no habitat for nesting sea turtles. * Dune cores can be installed whereby seawalls are not permitted because of distance to Coastal Construction Control Line (CCCL). * Dune cores are less expensive than higher-end seawalls. * Dune cores can be installed faster than the installation of a seawall. * Can be installed to the edge of the property line, whereby sea walls have a setback requirement.
