SAFE SHAPE EXHIBIT

SAFE SHAPE is a “pop-up” traveling exhibit in the form of a pavilion that
operates as a mock drug consumption room (DCR).

This exhibit was constructed to project an image of reason/science/rationality
and an unwavering commitment to humanistic enterprises without taking cues from
repressive and stigmatizing institutions and without resorting to a defensive
posture.

SAFE SHAPE’s design elements and content were conceived from a passion to
educate the public on the philosophy and practice of harm reduction. The exhibit
stems from the belief that the integration of public health and activist
architecture-design is not only achievable but can serve the best interests of
the entire community.

WHAT IS A DCR?

Supervised injection facilities (SIFs) are controlled health care settings where
people can more safely inject drugs under clinical supervision and receive
health care, counselling and referrals to health and social services, including
drug treatment. There is overwhelming evidence that SIFs are effective in
reducing new HIV infections, overdose deaths and public nuisance – and that they
do not increase drug use or criminal activity. There are currently 92 such
facilities operating in 62 cities around the world – but none in the U.S. (Drug
Policy Alliance Fact Sheet, 2015)

SIFs are a form of DCR specifically for injecting drug use.

SAFE SHAPE INTERVIEW

The Drugreporter team filmed a piece about the Safe Shape during the Drug Policy
Alliance conference in 2015. The video features an interview with Greg Scott who
came up with the original idea for SAFE SHAPE.
