HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SOCIETY

The Hazardous Materials Society was created by the Institute of Hazardous
Materials Management as a separate, 501[c][3] non-profit organization with its
own Board. No one who participates in any IHMM credential committee also
participates in an HMS activity, the two are kept strictly separate as HMS
respects the ANSI accredited credentials of IHMM.

HMS is established to provide excellence in education, training, advocacy,
information services, meetings and networking in the fields of hazardous
materials management, dangerous goods transportation, health, and safety to
raise the level of performance and professionalism among those individuals whose
services to their communities create a safer and more sustainable environment.
HMS provides support for all 12 of IHMM’s credentials.

PROUD TO STAND WITH OUR MILITARY

IHMM has designed a hazardous materials certification specifically for those
coming out of the military and transitioning to civilian professions. The
Associate Hazardous Materials Manager [AHMM] is just that credential. You can
learn more about the AHMM here.

You’ve learned some special skills while serving our country. As you consider
your options after the service, now is the time to consider a private
certification that respects your skills and sends a strong signal to private
sector employers about the skills you have and how those skills translate into
civilian life.IHMM participates in the military service branch’s Credential
Online [COOL] program to help you. Check these DoD sites for your branch and how

Our Mission
IHMM delivers professional standards of the highest excellence for
credentials and administers and promotes accredited credential programs
for professionals in the hazardous materials, health, safety, and dangerous
goods communities of practice.
Founded in 1984, the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), a
not-for-profit organization, has been protecting the environment and the
public’s health, safety, and security through the creation of credentials
recognizing professionals who have demonstrated a high level of knowledge,
expertise, and excellence in the management of hazardous materials,
transportation of dangerous goods, environmental protection, health and safety.
Founded in 1984… Over 17,000 homeland security, environmental protection,
engineering, health sciences, transportation, and public safety professionals
have earned IHMM’s accredited Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM®)
credential. IHMM also administers the Certified Hazardous Materials
Practitioner (CHMP®), the Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CDGP®), and
the Certified Dangerous Goods Trainer (CDGT®) credentials. In 2019, IHMM
acquired ISHM and now manages the Certified Health and Safety
Manager [CSHM], Certified Safety Management Practitioner [CSMP], Associate
Safety and Health Manager [ASHM], Certified School Safety Specialist [CSSS],
and Certified School Safety Manager [CSSM] credentials. IHMM’s Top 1%
Credentials… Companies and government value the professionals who proactively
seek opportunities to develop their skills and expertise.  One of the best ways
for individuals to demonstrate their commitment to career growth is by pursuing
IHMM certifications. 
Earning IHMM Credentials provide many benefits, including improved career
prospects and enhanced earning power. Survey results indicate that the median
annual base salary of individuals holding a credential from IHMM - is $100,000,
about 20 percent greater than the median annual base salary of survey
respondents who held no certification; $83,000.  Further, when years of
experience are taken into account, salaries are approximately 10 percent higher
for IHMM certificate holders with 5 to 14 years’ experience than a professional
with the same experience not holding a credential. Employers Value IHMM
Credentials… The average student spends thousands of dollars to achieve
something that 1.5 million other students also have. While undeniably valuable,
you need more than a Bachelor’s degree in order to clearly distinguish yourself
from everyone else in a highly competitive job market.

The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) offers the hazardous
materials, dangerous goods, environment, health, and safety premier accredited
professional credentials—credentials that recognize your expertise and open up
new possibilities for you to make a significant impact on public health and
safety, the environment, your community, and your country. Elevate Your Career…
Join the Top 1% at IHMM IHMM credentials have been granted accreditation by the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI).  The CHMM and CHMP credentials
were accredited in 2009 and CDGP was accredited in 2015.  The ANSI accreditation
program is based on the International Standard ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024.

IHMM’s CHMM, CHMP, CSMP, and CSHM certification programs are accredited by The
Council of Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). CESB is an
independent, voluntary membership body for organizations that recognize, through
specialty certification, the expertise of individuals practicing in engineering
and related fields. Highest Standards of Accredited Excellence… You’ve learned
some special skills while serving our country. As you consider your future after
the service, now is the time to consider a private certification that respects
your skills and gives a strong signal to private sector employers about the
skills you have and how they translate into civilian life.

IHMM supports the Credentialing On-Line [COOL] programs run for the services and
we are here to help you transition to civilian life with a credential upon which
you can build a strong civilian career. Proud to stand with our military… IHMM
is pleased to announce that the American National Standards Institute [ANSI] has
approved Kryterion Remotely Proctored Exams for IHMM’s CHMM, CHMP, and CDGP
exams. IHMM has been using the Kryterion Remotely Proctored Exams for the CSHM
and CSMP exams since April of this year.

About 60% of Kryterion in-person testing centers have reopened. If you prefer
the comfort and convenience of taking your exam from your home or office instead
of at a Kryterion center, IHMM is ready to enroll you in a remotely proctored
examination.
