Petrochemicals Europe has joined ChemSkills Project, a new European-funded
initiative addressing the digital and green transition in the chemical
industry. ChemSkills is about making sure that education and industry are on the
same page, creating a concrete plan to bridge the skills gap and getting the

🌍 Kicking off the European Ethylene Producers Committee (EEPC) Conference 2024
with a powerful panel discussion featuring Rafael CAYUELA (Dow), Rob Ingram
(INEOS), Cláudia Alves (Google), and Frans Stokman (Petrochemicals Europe
(Cefic)), hosted by Martin Harvey (SABIC)!

👥 With over 230 participants at the annual EEPC conference in Sitges, Spain, we
explored the challenges facing the chemical industry, particularly European
Ethylene Producers, and the opportunities that come with the necessary
transformation. The conversation focused on the growing global demand for base
products and the complexities of investing in Europe. Once investment is
secured, new hurdles such as permitting and the need for skilled talent emerge,
often leading to outsourcing.

🤝 Collaboration and innovative approaches are crucial to overcoming these
barriers, and the industry needs regulations enabling it to move from A to B
competitively and swiftly.

it takes to reach #netzero2050 🌍.

“To obtain the necessary funding, having a clear transition plan 🛣️ integrated
into the overall company strategy is key. Yet, increasing evidence shows that
despite investor expectations, only a minority of companies are developing
transition plans," says Elia Trippel, OECD - OCDE.

Such a plan should include clear deliverables, KPIs, and a timeline to provide
the needed clarity and reassurance to investors 🏛️.

The costs necessary to address the substantial changes required can become

illustrates the complex journey of petrochemicals from raw materials to everyday
products. The updated chart reflects the industry's initiatives to reduce its
carbon footprint, featuring new sources of feedstock such as #bionaphta,
#bioethanol, #pyrolysisoil, #chemicalrecycling, #hydrogen, and #biomethane.

🌍 Today at Chemelot Circular Hub, we kickstarted the first-ever Transition
Finance event, fostering discussions among industry, government, academia, and
the finance sector on the challenges in achieving 2050 goals, funding the
transition, and ensuring a level playing field.

💡 It might not be clear yet how to overcome all the challenges on the road to
2050, but one thing is certain: we need to collaborate. And the Chemelot
Circular Hub Transition Finance event provides the perfect platform. Stay tuned

De Europese chemie moet voorop willen lopen en gezien willen worden.
Dat stellen Marco Mensink en Frans Stokman van Cefic in het interview dat ik
onlangs met ze had in Brussel. Mensink: 'In Rotterdam zijn er bedrijven die
niemand kent. Waarom zouden overheden of de samenleving geld in die bedrijven
willen steken? Chemische bedrijven moeten zich veel meer laten zien. Er gebeuren
geweldige dingen. Laat dat zien. Vertel het. Breng het naar buiten!’

Dat klinkt natuurlijk als muziek in de oren van een journalist en
techniekfilosoof! In mijn hoofdredactionele commentaar ga ik daar graag op in.

🏭🌍💡An opinion piece in Bloomberg by Javier Blas: Industrial and energy
policies matter. If Europe wants to preserve some of its old industrial power,
policymakers must publicly support the petrochemical industry...

For Europe to be globally competitive, economically resilient, and ensure job
and supply security, the EU urgently needs to create business case for our
#chemicalindustry. Without it, we are facing even more significant challenges in
the imminent future:

Older facilities, built in 1960s-70s, will struggle to meet #FitFor55 goals.
With increasing carbon costs and reduced free allocations, less competitive
plants could close down, and will not be replaced by new investments. High raw
material and energy costs in Europe will make it even more difficult to compete
with imports from the US, China, and the Middle East, as these regions benefit
from lower costs and are increasing their exports to Europe.

These issues do not align with EU's ambition to prevent dependence on imports
and have self-sufficient key industries that ensure autonomy in providing basic
industrial building blocks.
