MAX VERSTAPPEN CONTRADICTED HIMSELF AFTER FINISHING SECOND AT THE MIAMI GRAND
PRIX ON SUNDAY.

Max Verstappen contradicted himself in the aftermath of the Miami Grand Prix,
suggesting that he was struggling with understeer and a lack of grip, despite
previously claiming that his collision with the bollard at the Turns 14 and 15
chicane did not cause damage that affected his lap time.

Verstappen was in the lead of the race when he failed to make the chicane entry
at Turn 14. To avoid losing too much time through the challenging section of
track, the Dutchman scampered over the kerb, picking up damage to the underside
of his RB20 and clattering the bollard sending it onto the racetrack and
eventually triggering a virtual safety car.



Later in the race, a safety car triggered by Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant
handed the lead to Lando Norris. Taking the restart in second place, Verstappen
was unable to lay a glove on the McLaren driver, who opened up a lead of over
seven seconds with the Red Bull ace forced to settle for a P2 finish.

When asked after the race whether damage from his trip over the kerb cost him
time, Verstappen replied: “It didn’t feel different, so I don’t know. Maybe it
was already damaged. I don’t know. I mean I hit that thing and then my pace was
the same so I didn’t really know if there was damage.”

However, these comments were not echoed by team principal Christian Horner.
Verstappen’s boss explained: “He hit the bollard around Lap 20, and that’s
actually done quite a lot of damage to the underside of the car, so we’ll have
to look at exactly what the effect of that has been.”



In the aftermath of these comments, Verstappen changed his tune and when Red
Bull released their post-race press release, the three-time world champion was
quoted as complaining about a lack of grip and understeer at the Miami
International Autodrome.

“When we took the car back to the garage, we also found that the floor was
damaged and had a hole in which could have been picked up from hitting the
cone,” Verstappen explained, caveating his performance.”

He added: “Ultimately today we were not quick enough. The Safety Car did not
help us but we still had plenty of opportunities to win the race and
unfortunately, we lacked pace. We also struggled with the tyres and balance of
the car all weekend and I never felt too comfortable in the car.

“In the high speed, I was understeering and we also struggled a lot with the
grip with the tyres. It wasn’t our best weekend and it really shows that
everything needs to work well to win races and it is not as easy as people might
think.”

Following his P2 finish in Miami, Verstappen has actually extended his
championship advantage to 33 points, but the Dutchman now faces regular
competition from the likes of Norris and Charles Leclerc, as well as potential
future team-mate Carlos Sainz with Ferrari preparing a major upgrade package for
the upcoming race in Imola.
