"Do I believe that there are some migrants who are committing crimes in the city? Yes. Yes," Adams said during a press conference. "There are people who are committing crimes in all walks of life. It's not just migrants and asylum-seekers. I think that we have a number of migrants who have committed crimes. We have a number of nonmigrants who are committing crimes." TRUMP HOLDS FOX NEWS TOWN HALL TO COUNTER CNN IOWA DEBATE WITH DESANTIS AND HALEY Crime statistics from the New York Police Department show that vehicle grand larcenies and felony assaults increased 11.3% and 6.9%, respectively, in October 2023. Robberies increased 3.5% for the month but had an overall decrease of 4.8% year to date. However, Adams added that people should not take away from his comments that a rise in crimes is solely because of immigrants. "And, so, I do not want to walk away with anyone saying that the [grand larceny auto] increase we saw in the city was just migrants. No, it's not. It was long-term New Yorkers who committed [grand larceny auto] also," he added. "But are there some crimes that migrants have committed? Yes, there are." More than 161,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in New York and sought aid since spring 2022. Adams is expecting a surge in immigrants to enter the city in the coming months, as several Democratic mayors warn that they have almost reached maximum capacity and require the federal government to take action. "New York City has begun to see another surge of migrants arriving, and we expect this to intensify over the coming days as a result of Texas Gov. Abbott's cruel and inhumane politics," Adams said in December. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston have also criticized Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) for busing immigrants to their cities, accusing him of working to "sow seeds of chaos" and refusing to create a coordinated, humanitarian plan. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER The mayors have cracked down on bus drop-off zones for travel companies bringing immigrants into their cities, limiting them to a small window and threatening to fine or sue companies that drop off homeless immigrants. Adams passed an ordinance last week that requires buses to arrive between 8:30 a.m. and noon on weekdays at a single drop-off site. The executive order also requires bus operators to provide at least 32 hours of advance notice of arrivals to limit the hours to drop-off times. To circumvent these rules, bus companies have begun dropping immigrants off in suburbs or even in different states, forcing immigrants to board transit systems into the cities. In response, several suburbs of Chicago, for example, have passed resolutions forbidding immigrants to board in hotels or to be dropped off in their villages.
