<p> As one of your constituents, I am writing to urge you to do everything in your power in the coming weeks to secure passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, a critical piece of legislation that would improve the lives of millions of families
around the country, particularly families of same-sex couples and interracial couples. <br><br>Despite the landmark Supreme Court decisions for the freedom to marry in 2013 and 2015, marriage equality is again at risk. Associate Justice
Clarence Thomas, in his concurrence in the decision overturning Roe v. Wade, wrote that the Court "should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents," including Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized marriage for
same-sex couples nationwide. Justice Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito also issued a formal rebuke of Obergefell on the Court's opening day in October 2020. <br><br>Passing the Respect for Marriage Act is an important way to send a message of
dignity and respect for all LGBTQ families. It would also codify protections for interracial couples that were secured by the landmark Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia.<br><br>The most recent polling shows that 71% of Americans
support marriage equality higher than ever before. This bill is about freedom and fairness for all Americans, and it is about being pro-family values that all of us can support, no matter our political affiliation.<br><br>When a vote on the
