THE IMPORTANCE OF PEDIGREE STUDY FOR BREEDERS

If you are a competitor looking for your next mount, unless you are conversant
in bloodlines, then pedigree study is not going to help you too much. Instead
you will look at the conformation of the prospective equines, evaluate their way
of going and their performance record if they have one. And of course ride them
yourself to see if they are a good match for you.
In contrast, if you are a breeder and want to be successful, pedigree study is
of the utmost importance because the pedigree--if it is accurate--is the map of
the genetics. And the genetics of your breeding stock and its planned mates is
what you need to understand.

Conformation and performance are of great use to the breeder as well, but the
can be deceptive and could result in the paying of a stud fee or purchase price
of a horse for your herd that will not help you reach your goal. So you need the
tool of pedigree analysis in your belt, so you don't make costly mistakes--the

REMEMBER THE THOROUGHBRED OPTION - SEVENTEEN

When bigger is not better STUDY SUCCESS!

As many have said in the past you can’t ride a pedigree, so it is no good going
on pedigree alone. But a knowledge of pedigrees can also be a great help,
although there will always be the outliers that are the exception, and genetic
diversity that should be treasured.

I was reminded of this yesterday when that great Wexford huntsman and horseman
Jeremy Cairns said to me,

“My wife’s dun hunter is ¼ trotter, ¼ Conny, ¼ Thoroughbred, and ¼ Tinker pony!
Brilliant over any jump. We have yet to find any field to contain her…wall
garden included!”

This hunter is 15.1hh but carries the weight and length of a 6ft 6ins Jeremy
with great ease.

WEIGHTY MATTERS

Talking of carrying weight, the Thoroughbred horse in general is smaller and
lighter than a warm blood…on average approx 200 lbs lighter when compared with a

USE THE POWER OF SIBLINGS WHEN PLANNING YOUR BREEDINGS

Ken McLean was the first person to point out that Tesio targeted full siblings
in his most successful breedings (Fairway xx /Pharos xx, St. Simonxx/Angelica
xx, Sainfoin xx/Sierra xx, and Stockwell xx/Rataplan xx). It was a genetic key
to the best racers he bred.

There is a positive genetic impact when close siblings are in your sport horse
lineage. Statistically, adding close siblings of important ancestors has proven
to be one of the most significant pedigree designs you can create to upgrade
your sport horse’s potency. The power in the presence of siblings, especially
full or three-quarter ones, will be demonstrated here.

“Full and three-quarter relatives in a pedigree seem to be able to gather the
strength from the past and bring it forward for utilization in the current
generation. They also appear to give a higher probability of success to the
mating” (Harper 1997, 21–22).
