With support from allies like you, we can continue the timely research and incisive policy analysis that policymakers and advocates need to fight harmful laws and protect abortion access. ⚖️ Every gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar now through the end of 2023! 🎁 Visit the link in our bio or gu.tt/donate 🔗 * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 2d At the end of 2023, the US abortion access landscape remains deeply fractured. Here’s a snapshot of where abortion bans and restrictions currently stand: ❌ 14 states enforcing total bans—with 2 new bans going into effect this year ❌ 7 states restricting access before at or before 18 weeks of pregnancy—with 3 new bans going into effect this year 📢 About 18 million women of reproductive age, in addition to transgender and nonbinary people who may need an abortion, no longer have access to abortion care in their state of residence. However, states also enacted a record number of measures to protect and expand abortion access. 🎉 22 states and DC enacted 129 protections—the highest number ever enacted! In the absence of federal protections, innovative state solutions are more critical than ever to protect and expand abortion care. Our new 2023 state trends analysis breaks down all of the critical abortion policy changes this year, along with key actions on contraception and gender-affirming care. Read more at the 🔗 in bio and explore our interactive map to view abortion-related policies in effect in every state! * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 4d Today marks 50 years since the Helms Amendment was passed. Repealing this unjust policy and ensuring all abortions are performed by a trained provider or using a WHO-recommended method would drastically reduce unsafe abortions and maternal deaths. Tap the 🔗 in bio to learn more about why it’s essential to repeal Helms once and for all. * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6d The latest data from our Monthly Abortion Provision Study found that more US abortion patients are traveling out of state for care and are mainly traveling to states that border those with total or early gestational bans. As we show ⬆, Illinois saw the largest increase in the number of people traveling from out of state—and it has important policies in place to protect abortion access. 🚨 No one should be forced to leave their home state, let alone their community, for care. This cannot be the new normal. We need policy and movement-building solutions that ensure abortion access for everyone. Read more about the increase in abortion-related travel at the 🔗 in our bio. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 8d 🚨 BREAKING: The US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the baseless case attempting to restrict mifepristone nationwide. As our Vice President for Public Policy Kelly Baden explains ⬆, the stakes for abortion access and bodily autonomy in the case are high. The Court must follow the scientific evidence showing that mifepristone is safe, effective and essential. Read Ms. Baden’s full statement at the 🔗 in bio. 📢 IMPORTANT: Mifepristone is still available. We will continue to share updates as the case progresses. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 9d 🌍 Since the 2015 adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, birth rates among adolescents declined 13% globally. But progress has stalled in other areas. For instance, the global maternal mortality ratio has barely changed. It remains more than 3x higher than the target set for 2030. In a just and equitable world, sexual and reproductive health and rights would be treated as basic health care, not a political issue, and all individuals would have the knowledge, resources, and autonomy to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives. Our comment in @thelancetgroup outlines the work needed to advance sexual & reproductive health & rights for everyone by 2030. We call on countries to include #SRH services in universal health plans and budgets. Tap the link in our bio to see the article. #SDG3 #HealthForAll #UniversalHealthCoverage * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 9d More than 4.4 billion people are of reproductive age and do not have access to adequate sexual & reproductive health services over the course of their lives. Comprehensive #SRH care is core to #HealthForAll and should include services related to: • Sexually transmitted infections • Pregnancy • Sexual and gender-based violence • Reproductive cancers • Subfertility and infertility • Comprehensive sex education • Sexual health and well-being • Modern contraception • Safe abortion and postabortion care In a just and equitable world, sexual and reproductive health and rights (#SRHR) would be treated as basic health care, and all individuals would have the knowledge, resources, and autonomy to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives. Everyone has a role to play in achieving #HealthForAll. Governments and donors can prioritize equitable, comprehensive SRH services. The private sector can develop and upscale innovations in SRH service delivery. We can all advocate for safe, effective, high-quality sexual & reproductive health services for everyone, everywhere. Tap the link in our bio to see our joint brief with @1point8billion and other partners @who, @akuglobal and @unu_iigh outlining why and how SRHR should be included in #UniversalHealthCoverage. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 10d Meet our 2022-2023 Bixby Fellow, Daniel Arango Arango, who serves as the Principal Research Associate at @fundacion.orientame! Let’s remember that ensuring access to safe abortion is essential to upholding dignity, freedom and justice for all. All people need access to sexual and reproductive health care, including information and resources that lead to timely, appropriate care. That includes safe abortion as a lifesaving, life-affirming health service. #StandUp4HumanRights * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 12d Five years ago, we called for the protection of the sexual and reproductive health and rights of displaced and refugee populations in humanitarian settings, in a landmark report from the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission. This call is as relevant as ever. More than 110 million people worldwide are displaced from persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations, with women and children being disproportionately impacted. Access to essential health care during conflicts or disasters is a human rights issue. #StandUp4HumanRights #HumanRightsDay * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 13d 🚨 Abortions dropped dramatically in South Carolina from August to September 2023, according to new findings from our Monthly Abortion Provision Study. This data is the first to capture the impact of South Carolina’s 6-week abortion ban that went into effect on August 23, 2023. In the first 6 months of 2023, 42% of SC abortion patients were traveling from out of state to receive care. With abortion now banned at 6 weeks, the effects will be felt throughout the region as harmful restrictions continue to push #AbortionAccess further out of reach. 🔗 Learn more about the impact of SC’s ban and what it means for the entire Southeast at the link in our bio. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 13d 📢 Abortion access in the US remains deeply fractured, but we want to recognize some wins from the past couple of months: 🗳️ Ohio's constitutional amendment protecting reproductive freedom went into effect yesterday on 12/7. It includes protections for abortion, contraception, continuing pregnancy and more! Congrats to the Ohio voters and advocates that made that win happen! However, given the various restrictions still in effect that interfere with access in the state, Ohio does not change categories on our interactive map. Kansas's 24-hour forced waiting period was temporarily blocked by a judge in late October, along with other restrictions that created barriers to accessing care. 📢 With the waiting period blocked for now, Kansas changes categories from Restrictive to Some Restrictions / Protections! Reminder: Any ruling or measure that expands and protects access to abortion is a win in our book. To learn more about abortion policies in every state, visit the 🔗 in bio! * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 16d In conflicts around the world, women who are displaced by war face increased risk of sexual violence and barriers to health care. Their needs are urgent and must not be ignored: sexual and reproductive health services, unimpeded by violent conflict. Five years ago, the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission’s landmark report called for the protection of the sexual and reproductive health and rights of displaced and refugee populations in humanitarian settings. This call is as relevant as ever. Today, more than 110 million people worldwide are displaced from persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations, with women and children being disproportionately impacted. Displacement does not stop sexual and reproductive health needs. Women and girls have a heightened need for services because of their increased risk of STIs, unwanted pregnancy, maternal death and illness, and sexual and gender-based violence. They deserve essential, lifesaving care including secure access to #SRH services. #16Days #WomenInConflict * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 20d 📣 Want to learn about the latest research and policies shaping reproductive health and rights? It’s a great time to remember that contraception is a core component of reproductive autonomy and should be available to anyone who needs it—including trans and nonbinary folks, young people and those living with low incomes. We know that people use birth control for many reasons, including to avoid pregnancy, have healthier pregnancies or help time and space births, and more. That’s why everyone deserves access to the full range of high-quality, affordable birth control methods that work best for them. 💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽 We’re also excited for the first over-the-counter birth control pill to become available in the US early next year! This could significantly increase contraceptive access for many people. But our work to protect access is far from over. 🚨 The same legal arguments used to overturn Roe also threaten the right to birth control. With the health and rights of many people at risk, we can’t take anything for granted. The fight to ensure reproductive freedom for all must continue! We're proud to stand with @powertodecide and @bedsider today and every day to say #ThxBirthControl! * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 42d 📢 Ohioans proved yet again that when abortion rights are on the ballot, abortion wins. The stakes are high for 2024. Abortion rights measures are already on 2024 ballots in New York and Maryland, and more states are aiming to do the same. Here’s what you need to know: ✅ The #NewYork measure would enshrine protection based on characteristics like sexual orientation, gender and pregnancy in the state constitution. It would also protect residents from government actions that would curtail repro autonomy or access to care. ✅ The ballot measure in #Maryland would establish a right to reproductive freedom in the state constitution. This is a powerful safeguard against future attacks if state leadership changes. ✅ Campaigns are also underway to get an abortion rights measure on the ballot in 2024 in other states across the US. The overturning of Roe was a shock, but voters and policymakers are taking action at the state level to protect and expand abortion access. These fights are critical, but federal protections are also urgently needed to ensure access for all! 💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽 * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 42d 🚨 More than half of US clinics providing abortions to incarcerated individuals in 2020 were in states hostile to abortion, according to the latest analysis from our Abortion Provider Census. Swipe to read the key findings 👆 The number of women who were incarcerated INCREASED in 2021, which means the need for abortion services among people in prisons and jails will continue. But post-Roe restrictions and bans will push care even further out of reach. Abortion bans will force more incarcerated individuals to continue pregnancies against their will. And due to structural racism, this will disproportionately affect Black and Brown individuals, further exacerbating racial disparities in abortion access. 📢 EVERYONE deserves access to reproductive health care, including abortion care. We need policies that support access to these services for all incarcerated people. Read more about the full study at the link in our bio. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 43d These November elections proved yet again that abortion rights and access continue to mobilize broad support from voters across the country US 👏 These wins are critical in the face of increased attacks on reproductive freedom and autonomy. A reminder on where abortion bans and restrictions stand: ❌ 14 states are enforcing total bans ❗ Many more states are enforcing bans based on gestational duration that would have been blatantly unconstitutional under Roe 🚗 These bans are clustered in regions like the South and Southeast, forcing people to travel huge distances for care Our experts will continue to monitor the state policy landscape for important updates. Tap the link in our bio for more on each state’s abortion policies! * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 44d 📣 This win was critical to protect Ohioans’ bodily autonomy! A 6-week ban went into effect briefly after Roe was overturned, with devastating impacts. Huge shoutout to all the advocates on the ground who countered a tidal wave of misinformation and made this happen! @ppaohio @prochoiceoh @ourr_2023 Tap the 🔗 in bio to learn more about this critical victory via @19thnews! * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 44d Our Monthly Abortion Provision Study now captures abortion incidence data from January-August 2023. The latest findings show a slight national increase, a 100% decrease in Indiana and a sustained decline in North Carolina. ➡️ North Carolina’s 12-week ban and mandatory waiting period continue to have devastating impacts on abortion access throughout the Southeast. ➡️ In Indiana, a total abortion ban went into effect on August 21, but providers stopped offering abortion care on August 1 due to legal uncertainty. Our research continues to highlight how these inhumane restrictions and bans drastically impact those seeking care. And these barriers to abortion access continue to fall hardest on people with fewer financial resources, Black and Brown people, young people, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ communities and those in rural areas. Explore our interactive resource and learn more about our latest findings at the 🔗 in our bio. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 50d 📺 Watch our session from the Global Forum for Adolescents, now available on demand! Tap the link in our bio for the video! #1point8 #ASRHR * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 51d 🎉 We’re celebrating our 55th year of advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights! Since 1968, the Guttmacher Institute has envisioned a world where everyone can make decisions about their lives, bodies and futures with dignity and autonomy. We’ve fought to make this a reality through innovative research, incisive policy analysis and evidence-based advocacy. Our work has led to many historic wins—from our input in the creation of Title X in the US, the only federal program dedicated to providing family planning services to people living with low incomes, to our role in facilitating the decriminalization of abortion in countries like Colombia and Ireland, and so much more. In short, we’ve helped to fuel the fight for reproductive health and rights for more than half a century. 💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽 Today this fight is more necessary than ever as attacks on bodily autonomy increase in post-Roe America and globally. But we aren’t going anywhere. We’re reenergized by a commitment to center equity, justice and the needs of marginalized communities. The Southeast has some of the strictest abortion laws in the US, and North Carolina has been a lifeline for abortion seekers in nearby states. But NC’s 12-week ban and in-person counseling requirement will devastate access for out-of-state patients. 🚨 We can’t forget that the harm inflicted by bans and restrictions does not affect everyone equally. This data is the first to capture the impact of severe abortion restrictions that took effect in North Carolina on July 1—a 12-week ban and a medically unnecessary in-person visit for state-mandated counseling required at least 72 hours before the abortion. Reminder: Many people do not have the privilege and resources to overcome these obstacles to care—especially those in marginalized communities. With 1,300 fewer abortions in NC in July compared to June, the impact is clear. This US policy withholds abortion coverage from millions of people enrolled in Medicaid and other federal programs across 32 states and DC. Most of these states also have total abortion bans or bans based on gestational duration. Hyde increases barriers to care, even for people in states where abortion remains legal. We also know that the harm of Hyde falls hardest on communities that have been systematically excluded from economic opportunity, including women with low incomes and people of color. 🚨 This racist and coercive policy must end once and for all. Congress can remove Hyde and related coverage bans by passing the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act, which would guarantee coverage for abortion—no matter how much someone earns, how they're insured, or where they live. This is an enormous loss for South Carolinians' reproductive autonomy. Here’s what you need to know: 📢 Many people don't know they're pregnant at 6 weeks. 📢 SC has even more restrictions than Georgia, the other state with a 6-week ban. 📢 Even if people know they are pregnant, delays like getting an appointment, the resources to pay + making other arrangements like taking time off work means accessing care will be almost impossible. 📢 We know that anti-abortion policymakers won’t stop at a 6-week ban. The goal is always a total end to abortion access. This ban not only has devastating impacts for South Carolinians, but across the region. With this in effect, Florida is the only state in the region where people can seek abortions after 12 weeks. And abortion access is at risk there too. We know those who are already and will continue to be most impacted by abortion bans are people marginalized by systemic racism and economic insecurity. ✨ Donating to abortion funds like @carolinaabortionfund, @palmettostateabortionfund and @ARC_Southeast is more essential than ever to support people’s access to care. Visit the link in our bio for more on executive orders, shield laws and other state actions that can expand abortion rights and access 💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽 * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 4mo 🚨 After months of chaos and confusion, Indiana's total abortion ban is officially in effect. This is a devastating blow to Hoosiers’ bodily autonomy and a direct attack on reproductive rights in the state. Our abortion policy map is up to date, with Indiana moving to Most Restrictive. Abortion access has already been limited in Indiana. Hoosiers will continue to be forced to travel out of state for clinic-based abortion care, pushing essential services even further out of reach. And as bans cluster regionally, people beyond Indiana will feel the impact, especially those in the Midwest. Let's be clear: 📢 Accessing abortion care will be even more difficult–if not impossible–for those who are with low-incomes and are marginalized by structural racism. 📢 It's a total abortion ban–don’t be fooled by exceptions. 📢 EVERYONE deserves access to abortion without barriers. Essential groups like @chicagoabortionfund, @pretermclevelandohio, @iaafund and @midwest_access_coalition are working to make abortion and reproductive health care more accessible for folks in the Midwest. ✨ You can help by donating to these groups and supporting the critical work they do! For now, the ruling isn’t in effect, and access to mifepristone remains unchanged. But this case will likely end up before SCOTUS—and the same justices who overturned Roe v. Wade just over a year ago. As our Vice President for Public Policy Kelly Baden explains ⬆, the anti-abortion activists behind this case weren’t just aiming to overturn Roe. 🚨 Their goal is to ban abortion nationwide, at any point of pregnancy, for any reason. But that hasn’t stopped anti-abortion groups in the US from spinning a false narrative and increasing their attacks on this critical medication. 🚨 If mifepristone becomes unavailable, existing inequities in abortion access will only become worse—especially for Black and Brown people, individuals living with low incomes, young people, immigrants and others who face systemic barriers to care. The Health Equity and Access under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Families Act reintroduced in the House and Senate today aims to tackle this by: ️➡️ ️Eliminating the 5-year wait for immigrants and migrants with green cards to enroll in Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) ➡️ Ensuring access to coverage for DACA recipients ➡️ Enabling immigrants and migrants without documentation to access the ACA Marketplace Our findings from 2019 show that more noncitizen immigrants were uninsured as compared to their US-born and naturalized counterparts. Executive orders allow US state governors to enact a policy immediately 💪 After the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked last May, several governors took action. Since then, 14 governors have issued executive orders to protect abortion providers and seekers from out-of-state legal action. In our new analysis, we break down what these executive orders are, how they differ from other protections such as shield laws, and what steps state policymakers need to take next to protect abortion rights and access. Some of these critical steps include: ✅ Repealing existing restrictions on abortion care 💲 Boosting funding to abortion funds and abortion infrastructure 🤝 Building solidarity across states to counter the anti-abortion agenda In case it wasn’t already clear, overturning Roe was just one of many attacks on health care and bodily autonomy—all of which are part of a larger agenda to strip people of decision-making power over their bodies. Due to the rise of early gestational week bans, we made a change to our scoring system that more accurately reflects how 6 and 12-week abortion bans severely restrict people’s autonomy and access to essential health care. With our new scoring, North Carolina has also moved from Restrictive to Very Restrictive due to the state enforcing a 12-week ban with onerous new restrictions that have the sole aim of limiting access to abortion care. US state and local policymakers have been taking action to protect and expand abortion access, including for people who must now leave their home states to get care. Our partners in Africa, Latin America and beyond offered expertise on collaboration and movement building, illustrating how advocates in the US and around the world can learn from and support each other to protect abortion rights, human rights, gender justice and more. As all of our speakers made clear: The work to protect abortion access has no borders. It is deeply connected to other fights for health, rights and autonomy. We can and must work together to advance our vision of abortion access for everyone, everywhere. Stay tuned for more updates and insights from the event coming soon! * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 5mo 🚨 Less than a week ago, we marked one year since Roe was overturned by the US Supreme Court. We witnessed abortion rights erode as a wave of state bans swept across the US, pushing essential care out of reach for millions of people. Roe was a cornerstone of reproductive rights, but it didn’t ensure equitable access to abortion. Now, access is further limited—especially for Black, Brown and other people of color and those with the fewest economic resources. Bodily autonomy is under attack in other ways, too. Since Roe was overturned, anti-abortion state legislators have introduced a slew of bills targeting the health and rights of LGBTQ+ communities, including bans on gender-affirming care for young people. Our experts have closely monitored these harmful impacts during the past year. In a growing collection of resources, including policy analyses, videos, op-eds, infographics, and more ⬆, we've outlined new ways that policymakers, advocates and donors can make a difference in our post-Roe reality. As we reflect on what’s been lost in the past year, we must also turn our attention to a new vision of equitable abortion access and reproductive autonomy. We stand in solidarity with advocates and policymakers who share this vision, and we’re as committed as ever to making it possible for all. Tap the link in bio to view all of our resources on Roe v. Wade and Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization: https://www.guttmacher.org/abortion-rights-supreme-court * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo This first year without the protections of Roe brought dangerous abortion bans, restrictions and unjust attacks on bodily autonomy. As our President and CEO Dr. Herminia Palacio notes, we have seen that the anti-abortion movement will stop at nothing to eliminate access to abortion and other essential health care that all people deserve. Yet, in the face of these relentless attacks, we know that the fight for reproductive freedom is far from over. We stand ready for the work ahead and will never stop fighting to build a future of truly equitable abortion access for all. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo Foundations and individual donors stepped up in important ways after Roe was overturned one year ago. Abortion funds, clinics and advocacy organizations saw a sharp increase in donations in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision. This influx of funds was crucial to meeting urgent needs for abortion services across the nation. It also showed just how critical philanthropy is in a post-Roe world! But more giving is needed to keep the fight for abortion access going over the long term. In a new op-ed for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, our experts Jonathan Wittenberg and Wendy Sealey share insights from leaders and advocates in the field on how donors can sustain this fight and move us closer to equitable abortion access for all. Tap the 🔗 in bio to read the article! * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo After decades of restrictions and one year since Roe was overturned, the devastating realities of getting abortion care in the US demand new solutions for lasting change. Introduced today by @repayannapressley, the Abortion Justice Act is bold legislation that would ensure essential health care for anyone who needs it! This is critical as we face an escalating crisis. Abortion is completely banned in 13 US states and unavailable in Wisconsin. This has left large regions of the country without access to essential care, and increased wait times at clinics in states where abortion remains legal. Bans hurt everyone, but they're most harmful to people who already face significant barriers to care due to systemic racism and economic injustice. This includes Black, Brown and other people of color, young people, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people living with low incomes. 🚨 When these obstacles are layered on top of each other, abortion can be pushed completely out of reach. The Abortion Justice Act would address this by protecting the right of all people—no matter who they are, where they live or how much they make—to get abortion care without unjust barriers or interference. It’s a bold step toward ensuring equitable access for all! Check out @allaboveall’s fact sheet on the bill by tapping the 🔗 in bio! * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo LGBTQ+ people need high-quality and affordable abortion care. All too often, overlapping barriers make this essential care harder to access. Our latest data show that a substantial number of LGBTQ+ individuals in the US seek and obtain abortions: as many as 16% of abortion patients don't identify as cisgender or heterosexual women. But LGBTQ+ people face unique obstacles to abortion access, including discrimination within the US health system and a lack of inclusive care that may discourage people from seeking the essential abortion services they need. Right now, we're seeing widespread attacks on the health and rights of LGBTQ+ people, particularly anti-trans legislation focused on restricting gender-affirming care for young people. The introduction of these bills has only ramped up since Roe was overturned, alongside bans on abortion in many states across the nation. 🚨 When abortion restrictions are layered on top of existing barriers, access to care is placed even further out of reach. No matter how someone identifies, everyone should be able to get an abortion when they need it—period. We can't stop fighting to break down the barriers that prevent LGBTQ+ people from getting the care they deserve. From the Hyde Amendment to state bans on gender-affirming care, anti-abortion groups have relentlessly pushed policies that undermine bodily autonomy and target the most marginalized communities. In a new op-ed for @publichealthmag, our experts Kelly Baden and Isabel Guarnieri look at ongoing attacks on abortion access since Roe v. Wade fell one year ago and offer critical steps that policymakers can take to defend abortion access. Some of the most important actions include: 💲 Reducing costs for abortion seekers 🏥 Expanding insurance coverage for abortion 🛡️ Enacting shield laws that protect patients and providers from out-of-state legal action Better state policies are crucial, but we need federal protection, too. Congress must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage Act and the HEAL for Immigrant Families Act to restore abortion rights and access nationwide. One year post-Roe, it’s clear that anti-abortion groups want to control reproductive freedom at all costs. As our experts explain, it’s time to fight harder than ever before for policies that will ensure health and rights for all. We stand in solidarity with Black communities nationwide and will never stop working to achieve justice for all. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo One year after Roe was overturned, state policy on abortion has been chaotic and confusing with devastating impacts, particularly for those seeking and providing abortions. In our new analysis with @stateinnovation, we break down the major state policy trends from the past 12 months ⬇ 📢 Bans on essential health care: Abortion is now completely banned in 13 states and continues to be unavailable in Wisconsin. This year, we also saw 17 states enact bans on gender-affirming care for young people—14 of these states have abortion bans in place. 🚨 Attacks on democracy: Anti-abortion state lawmakers have resorted to new tactics to further limit abortion access, including by changing the rules around state ballot measures that have been crucial to expanding abortion rights after the end of Roe. 💪 Actions to protect abortion: Policymakers in several states worked to expand abortion access in a variety of ways. Importantly, 9 states and DC enacted "shield laws" in 2023 to protect abortion providers and patients from punishments or investigations in states that have banned abortion. Everyone should be able to get essential health care and make decisions about their bodies and lives with dignity. In this post-Roe reality, where bodily autonomy is under threat on multiple fronts, we need policymakers at all levels to fight these attacks and step up to protect abortion access for all. Tap the link in bio to learn more about the state policies that defined this past year, and what we must do to carve a path forward for abortion rights! * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo 📣 LGBTQ+ people in the US need, want and have abortions. The latest data from our Abortion Patient Survey show that *as many as 16%* of people who get abortion care don't identify as heterosexual women. Respondents included individuals who reported that: ➡ Their gender identity was something other than woman or female, including gender nonbinary and transgender male ➡ Their sexuality was non-heterosexual, including bisexual, pansexual, and lesbian This new evidence is more important now than ever, as attacks on reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights have only accelerated in the one year since Roe v. Wade was overturned. Having accurate data on the sexual orientation and gender identity of abortion seekers can help us fight back against unjust laws and ensure that LGBTQ+ people get the essential health care they need and deserve. Tap the 🔗 to learn more about the study findings! * PreviousNext GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo Trans people deserve access to health care that allows them to make decisions about their lives and futures with dignity. That includes gender-affirming care AND abortion care. But in the year since Roe was overturned, attacks on bodily autonomy have escalated: As of June 5, 17 US states have banned young trans people’s access to gender affirming care. Many of the same states have abortion bans in effect. 🚨 All of these inhumane attacks have a similar goal: Limit people’s ability to make decisions about their bodies at all costs. Bans on essential health care also deepen the existing inequities experienced by marginalized groups like youth, people of color and people living with low incomes. That’s unacceptable. We want a world where everyone can access essential abortion and gender-affirming care when they need it, in their communities and on their own terms. To get there, we need state and federal policymakers to stand against anti-abortion and anti-trans bills, and work to protect bodily autonomy for all. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo 🏳️🌈 It's officially Pride Month! 🏳️🌈 For too long, sexual and reproductive health and rights have been treated as separate from LGBTQ issues. Pride reminds us of the need for a comprehensive approach and that advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ people = advancing rights for all! This month, we’ll share new resources highlighting critical ways that reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights intersect. This includes attacks on abortion access and gender-affirming care that we're seeing in many of the same US states. No matter someone's gender expression, identity or sexual orientation, all LGBTQ+ people need access to inclusive, affordable and culturally competent health services. Our policies and health systems must reflect these needs—it's a matter of basic dignity and autonomy. 💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽 Stay tuned for more! * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo 📣 Today is International Day of Action for Women’s Health! We’re joining colleagues and advocates around the world to amplify our demands for realizing sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice. This includes ending attacks on abortion rights and access in the US and other countries. ❌ Abortion is an experience shared by millions of people globally. What differs are the obstacles people face—legal, social, economic and more—in exercising bodily autonomy. It’s essential that policymakers, advocates and other stakeholders invest in and expand safe abortion access for anyone who needs it. And there has already been progress worth celebrating! During the past two decades, more than 50 countries have expanded the legal grounds for abortion. This has often been done to reduce maternal death and illness, ensure access to basic health care (which includes abortion services), and recognize autonomy. These are critical wins that we can build on to expand safe abortion access even further and protect the right of individuals to make their own decisions about pregnancy and childbearing. We stand in solidarity with advocates and everyone who is fighting to uphold health, rights and justice for all 💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽 * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 6mo 📣 We're proud to join our colleagues in forming a vision statement to guide our collective work: The newest Blueprint for Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice outlines 🔟 Principles to Reimagine and Strengthen Reproductive Freedom. This is an extreme violation of the dignity and autonomy of anyone who needs or wants abortion care. We expect and hope that the courts will block this horrific ban soon. Patients and providers deserve to access abortion care and do their jobs without this legal chaos and confusion. As the US abortion policy landscape shifts rapidly, we're keeping our interactive map up-to-date. Tap the link in bio for more ⬆ * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 7mo 🚨 Nebraska's governor just signed a 12-week abortion ban that is now in effect, and a ban on gender-affirming care for young people. Make no mistake: This is an outright attack on the health and rights of Nebraskans who need essential care. In case it hasn't sunk in yet, a 12-week ban *is not* a compromise. Any ban or restriction could be the one that pushes care out of reach for someone that needs it. And the dangerous clustering of state bans is a threat to abortion access across entire regions. The farther someone needs to travel, the more expensive and logistically challenging it is to get essential services. And the more likely it is that many people won't get care at all. Furthermore, any ban on gender-affirming care is an affront to young trans peoples' bodily autonomy and dignity. We must keep working to ensure that everyone can get the care they need—on their own terms. The outcome could have far-reaching consequences for mifepristone access across the nation. The evidence is clear: Mifepristone is safe, effective and widely used. After a two-day review, the @fda's advisory committee has voted to support over-the-counter status for the progestin-only birth control pill known as "OPill." A final vote is expected this summer and we'll share updates as we learn more. Everyone deserves contraception without barriers. Making birth control pills available OTC would be an important step toward expanding access for more people. 📣 Reminder: OTC pills should also be available without age restrictions and be fully covered by insurance without a prescription! Tap the link in bio to read more via @axios about today's vote and the critical benefits of OTC pill access 👆 * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 7mo Today, the @fda is reviewing the first-ever application for an over-the-counter birth control pill—the result of tireless efforts by advocates! During the meeting, our expert Dr. Megan Kavanaugh will testify alongside other reproductive health leaders on the benefits of an OTC pill, especially for adolescents. We know that young people face unique barriers to contraception. Still, the most recent data show that most adolescents used birth control the first time they had sex and the most recent time. Dozens of studies also show that increasing young people’s access to birth control *does not* increase their sexual activity. Between 2007—2014, adolescents were using more effective methods and using them more consistently—all while sexual activity rates remained unchanged. 📣 The science is clear: Making birth control pills available over the counter without age restrictions would be a public health win and a game changer for access. OTC pills should also be fully covered by insurance without a prescription! For more on the benefits of OTC access to birth control pills, tap the 🔗 in bio to read Dr. Kavanaugh's full testimony. * GUTTMACHERINSTITUTE 7mo 📣 It's #FreeThePill Day! We’re calling for a future where everyone can make their own health decisions and access essential care—including contraception. Moving birth control pills over the counter would be an important step toward expanding contraceptive access and advancing health equity! 🙌🏿🙌🏾🙌🏽 This is critical because there are currently too many barriers to accessing birth control pills, such as: 💰 Cost of a health care provider visit ➡️ Insurance coverage 🚍 Transportation ➡️ Access to childcare 💼 Ability to take time off work or school And we know that these barriers fall harder on those already marginalized by our health care system, including Black, Indigenous and other people of color, young people, immigrants, LGBTQ+ communities, those working to make ends meet and people with disabilities. 📣 We must make contraceptive care fully accessible and equitable for ALL. That's why any over-the counter pill must also be covered by insurance, priced affordably and available to people of all ages. Follow @free_the_pill to learn more!
