PROF RICHARD CALLAND FELLOW, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP Richard Calland has thirty years of experience in law, politics and sustainability. As a member of the London Bar, he practiced law for seven years before coming to South Africa in 1994, where he is now based at the University of Cape Town (UCT) as an Associate Professor in Public Law. In the field of sustainability strategy, Richard is a Fellow of the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership and as such has served as a member of faculty on numerous CISL leadership programmes for organisations such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, PWC, Network Rail, Namdeb, Tata, Anglo Platinum and Nedbank. He is also the co-director of the African Climate Finance Hub – the only African-based organisation with a specialist track record of working with governmental and development partners on climate finance in Africa. He was the co-lead, with Amar Bhattacharya of the Brookings Institute, of a technical task team of experts appointed by the UN Secretary-General to prepare a report on the state of international climate finance ahead of his climate summit in September 2019 and was re-appointed to provide an updated post-COVID report in late 2020. In February 2019, Prof Calland was appointed by the South African Minister for International Relations to chair an eight-person Ministerial Task Team to make recommendations on the design and establishment of a new diplomatic academy, a process that was completed on schedule in August 2019. In 2020, he was asked by the Minister of Trade & Industry in South Africa to be part of an informal advisory team to help him develop a coherent vision for the post-COVID economy. A prominent political analyst, and a columnist for the Mail & Guardian newspaper in South Africa since 2001, his latest book – Presidential Leadership in South Africa since 1994 – is due to be published in 2021. Earlier books include Anatomy of South Africa: Who holds the power? (2006), The Zuma Years (2012) and Make or Break: How the next three years will shape South Africa’s next three decades (2016). ANTON CARTWRIGHT SENIOR ASSOCIATE, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP Anton is an economist working with African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town. His research is focused on the interactions between ecological degradation and human well-being. He is director of Econologic where he has completed contracts for the World Bank, The European Union, DfID, WWF, local and international companies, NGOs and local governments. He is the founder of the company Credible Carbon, which enables poverty alleviating carbon sequestration and renewable energy projects to benefit from carbon market transactions. He is an associate of the African Climate and Development Institute and was a Lead Author of the IPCC's Special Report on 1.5C of Warming in 2018. At the African Centre for Cities, he previously convened the City of Cape Town's Climate Change Think Tank, an inter-disciplinary partnership between civil society, business and government and was part of a three-year knowledge co-generation project with the City of Cape Town around the green economy. He leads the Coalition for Urban transition's work in Africa and established the Tanzanian Urbanisation Laboratory (TULab) and the Ghana Urbanisation Think Tank. His postgraduate qualifications were obtained from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. TSOTETSI MAKONG TRADE LAW AND TRADE POLICY LECTURER, TRADE POLICY TRAINING CENTRE IN AFRICA (TRAPCA) Makong holds a MSc in International Trade Policy and Trade Law, LLM in Intellectual Property and Technology Law and LLM in Computer and Communications Law respectively from Lund University, University of Liverpool and Queen Mary University of London. He also holds a post graduate certificate in Trade Finance from Middlesex University. He is currently an employee of ESAMI based at its trade policy training centre in Africa (TRAPCA). He is charged with lecturing, research and teaching in several responsibilities ranging from policy analysis, business law, transport law, trade law to climate change and trade and environment. Previously he was a chairman of WTO Committees on Trade Related Investment Measures and Import Licensing, Coordinator and Chief negotiator of G77 and China Geneva Chapter, expert level Coordinator and Chief Negotiator of the African Group on WTO issues, and focal negotiator of the Geneva based ACP group on trade and environment, and for the LDCs on non-agricultural market access. Furthermore, he was expert negotiator of LDCs Group’s negotiations on TRIPS flexibilities and LDCs services waiver as well as Africa Groups chief negotiator on WTO’s trade facilitation Agreement. He brings a wealth of experience on matters pertaining to the African continent and regions where among others he provides research and advisory support to the individual countries, regional and continental blocks. He contributed directly in the drafting and legal scrubbing of the AfCFTA. Makong is currently on the roster of arbitrators on SADC-EU economic partnership agreement and SACU – MERCOSUR trade agreement. SUSAN NJOROGE MANAGING DIRECTOR, RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS CONSULTING Susan provides freelance/ independent consulting services to create and deliver tailored sustainability and communications solutions in strategy, programme design and implementation; capability building; stakeholder dialogue and partnerships, and reporting/evaluation to organisations that bring tangible value and contribute to building a responsible business landscape. Prior to consulting, Susan was Head of Sustainability & Community Engagement at Standard Chartered Bank Kenya. Before this, she worked with Unilever as Head of Corporate Affairs, East Africa and prior to that with DHL Express as Head of Marketing & Communications East Africa. She has held various management roles with DHL in corporate responsibility and communications in Europe and Asia. Susan also worked with CSR Europe, Europe’s leading business network for CSR, as Senior Programmes Manager leading CSR services delivery, project design and management for CSR Europe’s members. YVETTE NOWELL PROGRAMME DIRECTOR, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP (SOUTH AFRICA) Yvette has a background in high school teaching, working with non-profit organisations and a significant chapter as a social investment specialist in a corporate and investment bank. Her interest in sustainability has grown alongside her experience of different sectors and silos – and the people in all of them, who make change happen. Her facilitation style helps to level the playing field and aims to connect people, so we can be more creative and find better solutions, together. KHUMO SHONGWE SENIOR ASSOCIATE, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP Khumo has over 16 years’ experience in various senior human resources-related roles in the mining industry in South Africa. Until the end of January 2013, she was the Executive Director of Royal Bafokeng Holdings, responsible for people and sustainability. Khumo has worked in a wide variety of capacities including transformation, HR consulting, HR strategic planning, BEE and related community empowerment, HR turn-around projects, sustainable development, shared services applications, and rollouts of information technology systems. Khumo has sat on a number of boards, including Royal Bafokeng Holdings, Impala Platinum, Astrapak, Fraser Alexander, Vodacom South Africa, MB Technologies Lebone 11 College of the Bafokeng, among others. She is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI). She is also an alumna of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. Her formal qualifications are Journalism (Rhodes); BSc (Med) Hons (Psychology); MSc (Clinical Psychology) (MEDUNSA) and Executive Masters in Consulting and Coaching for Change (HEC Paris and University of Oxford). ALLEN SALO MARKETING & BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS MANAGER, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP (SOUTH AFRICA) With nearly 15 years of experience in the international tourism sector, Allen has a history of assisting tourism organisations to move towards more sustainability-focused business solutions. As Marketing and Business Relationships manager for CISL South Africa, Allen looks to deepen his own understanding of the concepts underpinning sustainable development and circularity, and to help spread the word among corporate clients in the Global South. SAM BARRETT RESEARCHER IN ADAPTATION FINANCE, INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT Sam is a researcher developing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of adaptation investments, the cash flows of adaptation, and ultimately, the commercial viability of adaptation investments. He is currently working towards developing a new direction in the study of adaptation finance that addresses the information deficit through an empirical investigation into the performance and commercial viability of private investment in local adaptation in LDCs. Through a suite of novel and innovate methods applied to the field of adaptation – including standardised investment performance ranking, portfolio analysis, asset pricing models and financial gradient approaches – his aim is to present multiple ways to empirically evaluate the performance of private investment in local adaptation, and document best practices for local actors to access, use and repay capital. MATTEO BIGONI SENIOR CLIMATE FINANCE SPECIALIST, FSD AFRICA Matteo is a stalwart believer that capital markets have a key role in financing the transformation of our society into a zero-carbon and sustainable civilisation as envisioned by the Paris Agreement. His interests are in forestry, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and biodiversity conservation. Matteo has extensive knowledge of the carbon market, CDM and international climate change policy. Prior to joining FSD Africa, Matteo worked at the Climate Bonds Initiative as Head of the Certification and managed the Certification Scheme under the Climate Bonds Standard. He worked with and provided climate finance capacity building training to many green bond stakeholders around the world including external reviewers, government agencies, central banks, underwriters, green bond issuers and development banks. From 2015 to end of 2016, he was Programme Manager for the Plan Vivo Foundation, a Scottish charity that manages the Plan Vivo Standard, a set of requirements for smallholders and rural communities wishing to generate voluntary carbon credits by managing their forests sustainably. From 2009 to 2014, Matteo worked on the development of projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol seeking to address energy needs in rural populations in West Africa (efficient cookstoves, solar energy and sustainable wood fuel). From 2008 to 2009, he also worked in Beijing under the EU-China Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Facilitation Project and conducted research on the effective sustainability of CDM and its impact on renewable energy in China TRACEY DAVIES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JUST SHARE Tracey is executive director of Just Share, a South African non-profit shareholder activist organisation using research, engagement, advocacy and activism to drive urgent action to combat climate change and reduce inequality. Just Share works with local and international activists and responsible investors to advance sustainable finance and a just transition to a low carbon economy in South Africa. Just Share works collaboratively with environmental justice organisations and responsible investors and co-filed South Africa’s first shareholder resolutions on climate risk. She sits on the Advisory Board for the National Business Initiative’s Just Transition Pathways Initiative, and the Global Reporting Initiative’s Human Rights Technical Committee. She is recognised as an expert on responsible investment, shareholder activism and corporate governance. Tracey holds a BA LLB from the University of Cape Town and an LLM from New York University. She is admitted as an attorney in South Africa and as a solicitor in England & Wales. WILL DAY FELLOW OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP For the last 10 years, Will has been Sustainability Advisor to PwC UK. In this role he works regularly with senior staff at Board and Executive team level of global and large national companies, and governments around the world to help them better understand and identify the strategic risks and opportunities that accompany the rapidly evolving global context. In addition, he has the following roles: • As a Fellow of CISL and a faculty member of the Prince of Wales’ Business and Sustainability Programme, Will has worked with sustainability leaders from private sector and government and civil society. Clients have included: Sainsbury’s, Old Mutual, Nedbank, Kingfisher, EDF, Johnson Matthey, the Beijing Municipal government, China Telecom, Tata Group, Laing O’Rourke, Interface, the World Bank, the Africa Development Bank, Arup, Saint Gobain, Grosvenor and Coca Cola Enterprises. • Chairman of the Sainsbury’s Foundation Advisory Board which oversees the development of the retailer’s Fairly Traded procurement processes. • Advisory Board member of SDGLead, a Danish impact investment consultancy. • Chairman of On Purpose, an NGO developing leaders for Social Enterprise. • Member of the Council of Ambassadors of WWF (UK), a major global conservation NGO. Previously, he was Chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission, the UK government’s independent advisory body. A member of the P&G Sustainability Advisory Board, a global consumer goods corporation. He was involved with the establishment of Comic Relief, a major UK fundraising and grant giving organisation, and was its first Grants Director for Africa. Has been Chairman of the BBC Children in Need Appeal and was Special Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) between 2004 and 2009. For twelve years he was a Trustee, and latterly Chairman, of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). Until 2018, he was also Chairman of Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), a ‘hybrid’ non-profit company, bringing together private sector and NGO organisations to deliver WatSan services to low-income communities in the developing world. ISABELLE DJENI LEGAL EXPERT AT ZENIZENI SUSTAINABLE FINANCE Isabelle has over 17 years’ experience in the fields of law and finance in various organisations from the private and public sectors in Africa and Europe. Her areas of expertise include public policy design, analysis & advocacy, legal & strategic advisory, negotiation, sovereign debt management, investment banking and corporate governance. She led the Review and Evaluation of Côte d’Ivoire’s Financial Inclusion Support Framework (FISF) Program, a World Bank Group initiative to accelerate and increase the effectiveness of reforms to achieve national financial inclusion goals. She negotiated Côte d’Ivoire’s $524.7M Compact with the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to finance projects in the education and transport sectors, and successfully designed reforms such as online tax returns and payment systems that helped improve Côte d’Ivoire’s ease of doing business, digital reach and reducing fraud. Isabelle currently works as an expert, Finance & Africa Groups at ZeniZeni Sustainable Finance. She has previously worked as Associate Director at UBS Investment Bank, Head of legal for EcoBank Capital in the EMEA region (excluding Nigeria), Business Development Director at African Leadership Network, Ecobank Capital, and as Technical Advisor for the Minister of Budget & SOEs in Côte d’Ivoire. Isabelle holds a Master’s degree in Internationl & European Law from the University of Poitiers, a Master’s in Business Law from the University of Paris X Nanterre, and a Master’s degree in Internationl Business Law from the Université de Tours. MALCOLM GRAY SENIOR ASSOCIATE, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP Prior to co-founding Libryo he spent 16 years working for Investec Asset Management in several senior roles, including as Portfolio Manager of various ESG funds and Global Head of ESG. Malcolm is an admitted attorney, who graduated with a BSc in Geology and Hydrology, an LLB and an LLM in Environmental Law. Malcolm has been involved in the establishment of a number of key sustainability initiatives in South Africa and abroad. He was a founding member of the JSE SRI Index Advisory Board, the world’s first emerging market Sustainability Index. He was a member of SAICA Integrated Reporting Working Group which developed the original guidelines for Integrated Reporting () and an active participant in the early establishment of the PRI (Principle for Responsible Investment). He was the conceptualiser and founding portfolio manager of the WWF Prescient Living Planet Fund in South Africa. Malcolm is currently a Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) where he contributes and teaches on sustainability, climate change, sustainable finance, and regulation. Malcolm is also an ALI and Aspen Global Leadership Fellow. GARY KENDALL STRATEGY AND SUSTAINABILITY SPECIALIST AT NEDBANK Dr Gary Kendall has been working at the intersection of business strategy and systemic risk for more than a decade. Prior to joining Nedbank in November 2013, he was Deputy Director at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) in Cape Town for 3 years, helping business leaders in Southern Africa to understand the mounting system pressures that will reshape their operating context. Gary previously served as Executive Director at SustainAbility, a hybrid think-tank and strategy consultancy based in London, where he advised numerous blue-chip organisations - including Ford, Shell, Nestlé, Novo Nordisk, Anglo American, A.P. Moller-Maersk and Sasol – on how to strengthen their business strategies with enhanced systems intelligence. His career in sustainable development began when he joined WWF International’s Climate & Energy team in 2006, which followed 9 years in the downstream oil industry with ExxonMobil, spanning diverse roles from technical services to sales, marketing and business development. Working across Europe, the US and Asia offered Gary first-hand insight to the strategic challenges faced by one of the economy’s most important yet problematic sectors. Gary is the author of the WWF publication on electromobility “Plugged In: The End of the Oil Age”. He has a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Liverpool and has been a season ticket holder with Liverpool F.C. since 1991. JACQUELINE MUSIITWA GLOBAL LEGAL AND REGULATORY EXPERT, AND ESG ADVISOR Jacqueline Musiitwa is an international trade lawyer representing investors interested in cross-border investments and governments in improving their business environment. Jacqueline's research interests include economic diplomacy between China and Africa, environmental, social and governance performance of Chinese companies abroad and media perception of China. She has published and spoken widely on China-Africa matters in main-stream media. In addition to working as a lawyer in private practice, she has worked in various leadership capacities for the World Trade Organization, International Finance Corporation, Trade and Development Bank Group and Rio Tinto. She is a member of the International Rescue Committee UK board and has served on the boards of various institutions across Africa. Lastly, she’s a Cybersecurity fellow at New America Foundation. She has a Juris Doctor from the Melbourne Law School at the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College. MARY NJUGUNA PRINCIPAL SPECIALIST, CAPITAL MARKETS AT FSD AFRICA Mary has over 16 years’ experience in capital markets regulation and legal practice and is passionate about supporting initiatives that promote economic development in Africa. She currently manages capital market development projects in sub-Saharan Africa with specific focus on FSD Africa’s flagship Africa Regulatory Support Programme (ARSP) whose objective is to strengthen the capacity of securities regulators in the region. Before joining FSD Africa, Mary worked at the Capital Markets Authority, Kenya from 2009 to 2018 as Manager, Corporate Approvals, responsible for leading the legal and financial analysis of capital raising transactions and license applications. Prior to this, she worked as a corporate and commercial associate in a legal practice in Nairobi, providing advisory services on a variety of financial transactions. Mary holds an MSc in Finance and Financial Law from SOAS, University of London and a Bachelors’ degree in law from the University of Manchester, UK. EVANS OSANO DIRECTOR, CAPITAL MARKETS AT FSD AFRICA Evans has a keen interest in how sustainable capital markets can address social and developmental challenges in Africa. He has over 20 years of global experience in investments, financial markets and development finance. This spans sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East & North Africa (MENA), North America, Europe and South Asia covering over 30 countries. At FSD Africa he leads capital markets development initiatives across sub-Saharan Africa. These include green bond markets and market infrastructure development. He also sits on the board and investment committee of the African Local Currency Bond Fund (ALCBF). Prior to joining FSD Africa, he worked with the IFC/World Bank as Head, Efficient Securities Markets Institutional Development (ESMID) Africa. At the World Bank Group, he participated in Financial Sector Assessment Programs (FSAPs) and provided technical assistance in debt (government and corporate) and equity capital markets and institutional investors in diverse regions. Before joining the World Bank Group, he was Chief Investment Officer/Head of Investments at AIG Global Investment Group where he headed the investment team that built and was responsible for US$1 billion assets, including a pan-African total return fund that was a pioneer investor in debt and equity markets across Africa. Evans developed the first Government Bond Market Index in Kenya, a widely followed equity market index and is the co-developer of the concept of M-Akiba to distribute government securities through mobile phones. Evans holds Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree from the Maastricht School of Management, Netherlands and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He also holds two masters level degrees; MBA and MPhil (Development Economics). MAREK SOANES RESEARCHER IN CLIMATE FINANCE, INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT Marek is a climate finance expert, with over 10 years of experience across climate change mitigation and adaptation. He led IIED’s influential climate finance research programme, supporting inclusive climate finance access across public, private, and civil society actors in Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America – including working directly with commercial banks, asset managers and other non-banking financial institutions. Across Africa Marek has supported climate finance access in francophone and anglophone countries, including Mali, Tanzania, Kenya, Senegal. He possesses strong networks and knowledge across development finance institutions, foundations, northern and southern government, academia, think tanks and grassroots organisations helping unlock money and build capabilities for transformative climate change. PROF MARY SCHOLES PROFESSOR AND RESEARCH CHAIR IN APPLIED SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND Prof Mary Scholes, a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, is currently a full professor in the School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences and holder of a Research Chair in Global Change and Systems Analysis. Her research activities focus on systems analysis in a variety of disciplines including, soil fertility, food security and biogeochemistry in savannas, plantation forests and croplands. She is currently actively involved in monitoring water pollution, food security, forestry and climate change and policy implementation in South Africa. Her publication record is extensive; she has mentored over 85 postgraduate students, and she teaches at postgraduate level and undergraduate levels at the University. She has been awarded the Vice-Chancellors Teaching, Research and Academic Citizen Awards. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, the South African Academy of Science, the World Academy of Sciences and the African Academy of Sciences. She is the recipient of several national and international awards including being elected as a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. She has served on Senate at Wits for over 25 years and has served on Council for three terms. MAY THAZIN AUNG RESEARCHER, CLIMATE CHANGE GROUP, IIED May Thazin Aung is a climate finance researcher at IIED working to promote locally led adaptation and access to climate finance to least developed countries. She has extensive experience using knowledge co-production methods to engage with diverse stakeholders and using policy analysis to promote evidence-based decision-making. She has worked in various thematic areas ranging from natural resource management, just transitions to green growth where she has sought to understand impacts of environmental degradation and climate change on the most marginalized groups in society. I graduated from the University for development studies with management option. I'm a reseacher who has contributed my knowledge in research into climate change issues in Ghana specifically the farmers, market women, agro chemical sellers, and charcoal burners who are distroying the environment through bad habit of cutting down of trees without planting other trees. I have taken some assignments to educate the general public about the effects of indiscriminately of cutting down trees and effect on chemicals products on the soil. Indeed climate change is very much appreciated for us to take it seriously without compromising with quality and details of the the society. SOLAPE OLUSOWAPE HAMMOND SPECIAL ADVISER SDGS AND INVESTMENT, LAGOS, STATE GOVERNMENT Solape Hammond is the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on the SDGs and Investment.
