Around July 2024, my hosting company, SiteGround, set out a notice that they
would start automatically upgrading all our sites to run on PHP 8 — if you
hadn’t manually upgraded them yourself first.

I had been hearing “PHP 8 will break webcomics running on older Wordpress
plugins” since 2023, so I knew it was important to be proactive about this!

If you have multiple domains on SiteGround, they each have their own PHP version
settings. That meant I got to handle erinptah.com (which has comics on the
subdomain shine.erinptah.com), bicatperson.com, and leifandthorn.com separately.

Backstory: The plugin I use to make polls on the Leif & Thorn site has a
“display a random open poll” option. So for several years, when I had a poll
question that wasn’t time-sensitive or on a deadline, I would just leave it open
indefinitely.

I just went through and closed them all! Which is why some of these are very
old.



Every once in a while, you may see a shiny new poll that revisits one of these
questions. Maybe a few years down the line I’ll do a post that rounds up “all
the original versions of a poll vs. the reprises of those polls.”

Miscellaneous things I’ve done to customize my webcomic layouts. Part 1 covered
edits that apply to comic-specific plugins, plus some definitions of the basic
technical terms. These are more general things you can do on any Wordpress-based
site, or, in some cases, any site at all.

(This is part of the “how do I webcomic?” series, with useful information on all
kinds of comicking-related topics.)

Disclaimer: some of these are extremely hacky. If you know how to edit the
actual underlying PHP, you’ll probably be tearing your hair out at how clunky
they are. This is for those of us who are a few steps down the tech-savviness
ladder.

A tip I wrote up for a recent @WebcomicTalk discussion on Mastodon, figured I’d
share it here.

kinds of comicking-related topics.)

If you share links to your comic updates on most social media, they should
automatically pull an image to go with the link. Maybe it’s the full comic page!
Maybe it’s your website header image. Maybe it’s broken and nothing happens at
all.

I use the Open Graph and Twitter Card Tags plugin to make sure that, not only do
mine work, they look nice.
