VENTILATION CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION TO RESPIRATORY ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

Welcome to the Medtronic Ventilation Curriculum, Chapter 1: Introduction to
Respiratory Anatomy and Physiology. This course is designed to give foundational
understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this course, you will be able to:

 * Describe the basic concepts of pulmonary anatomy and physiology and
understand the normal functioning of the respiratory system.
 * Explain how ventilation and circulation interact in the oxygen uptake and
   carbon dioxide elimination process.
 * Define the ventilation-perfusion relationship.
 * Describe the muscles of breathing and how they participate in the control of
   breathing.

This course provides one contact hour for nurses (California Board of Nursing),
RTs (American Association of Respiratory Care), EMS professionals (CAPCE), and
CRNAs (American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, B Credit).

For U.S. Healthcare Professionals, this course offers contact hours.
Participants who provide or have a license to provide healthcare in MA or VT
will not receive a contact hours certificate. This does NOT apply to EMS
professionals. HCPs who meet the expanded covered recipient provider types under
the federal Open Payments program and receive contact hours are subject to
reporting under this national disclosure program. By completing this course, you
agree to receiving contact hours and having this transfer of value reported as
applicable. Please see the Open Payments resources page
(https://www.cms.gov/OpenPayments/Program-Participants/Newly-Added-Covered-Recipients)
for more information.

RESPIRATORY COMPROMISE: USE OF CAPNOGRAPHY DURING PROCEDURAL SEDATION

The course will provide education and up to date information on respiratory
insufficiency, failure, and arrest as these are leading causes of procedural
complications and unplanned admissions, and can create a significant cost burden
to the healthcare system. This education session will review common risk factors
that may lead to respiratory compromise and will explore potential strategies
for reducing adverse events, such as continuous etCO2 monitoring.

RTs (American Association of Respiratory Care), and CRNAs (American Association
of Nurse Anesthetists, B Credit).

BEGINNING AIRWAY MANAGEMENT: TRACHEOSTOMY CARE 101

This eLearning activity focuses on the basic knowledge required to understand
and manage tracheostomy airways. We understand there are many reasons that lead
to the need for tracheostomy. Tracheostomy tubes are placed for both short term
use, and more significantly, long term use. The goal is to mitigate the number
of complications of the tracheostomy through better understanding of the
equipment, and procedures required for best practice care.
