« Shows Based on Christopher Bond's retelling of the Victorian pennydreadful The String of Pearls, (which was itself a retelling of a British myth, possibly rooted in truth) this musical (with a book by Hugh Wheeler) tells the tale of Sweeney Todd, a murderous barber, and his partner in crime, Nellie Lovett, a baker who disposes of the bodies by baking them into her pies. Meanwhile, Anthony Hope, a sailor who saved Todd's life, falls in love with Todd's estranged daughter, Johanna, who is being brought up as the ward of the twisted Judge Turpin. Includes the songs "Not While I'm Around," "Pretty Women," and "A Little Priest." > Show Data * Original Broadway Production Info * Cast * Musical Numbers * Cut Songs * TV National Tour Production Info * Cast * Cut Songs * New York Revival Info * Cast * Added Songs * Cut Songs * Original London Production Info * Cast * Added Songs * Cut Songs * London Revival Production Info * Cast * Recordings * Awards * Production Rights * Articles Original Broadway Production Info: Opened ................... Discuss this show in Sondheim.com's community forum: Finishing the Chat... ›› “Assassins is about how society interprets the American Dream, marginalizes outsiders and rewrites and sanitizes its collective history. "Something Just Broke" is a major distraction and plays like an afterthought, shoe horned simply to appease. The song breaks the dramatic fluidity and obstructs the overall pacing and climactic arc which derails the very intent and momentum that makes this work so compelling...” - Mark Bakalor “I found [the Sondheim Celebration's Company] to be completely delightful. Almost all of the numbers excited and energized me, and most of the scenes were about as pitch-perfect as you can get. I just sat there with a big smile on my face the whole show. Which is not to say that it is perfect...” - popcornonmyknees Explore the rest of the Finishing the Chat Community Forum With three hand-held cameras, one major theatrical milestone and nearly nineteen hours of footage, this rare and intimate look with Original Cast Album - Company is a must for any Sondheim fan.
