Proof of Machinehood
Extending trust from silicon-based attestation to rollups
Attest Your Device
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Automata 2.0?

Automata 2.0 is an optimistic attestation layer that extends modular trust to
Ethereum. Tethered to silicon-based hardware, the application-specific rollup
introduces an unbroken chain of trust flowing up the Web3 stack.

Along with Testnet being live, the rollout of Automata 2.0 is accompanied by a
Proof of Machinehood demo.

What is the Proof of Machinehood demo?

The Proof of Machinehood demo is a practical showcase of how the authenticity
and uniqueness of machines can be proved as on-chain verification. It performs
hardware-based attestation to establish the machine's inherent value, and is
resistant to replication or spoofing attempts.

Try out the demo to experience the first modular attestation layer in action.

What is attestation?

Just as individuals might assert their citizenship, or ownership of a Tesla,
machines can make claims about their properties, such as their security state or
the device’s certificate. Attestation allows these claims to be verified, in
confirming, for instance, that the hardware is backed by Trusted Platform Module
(TPM) technology, that it’s an unmodified Android system, or that it’s a
uniquely identifiable machine.

Attestation is the process in which claims are verified. Proof of Machinehood is
the attestation that the machine is what it claims to be. Read more in our
documentation.

What is the point of attestation?

Hardware attestations create a foundation of trust for both the device and
certain untampered computations it can perform. Once a device has been attested,
it establishes verifiable trust, and can be used by any on-chain service to
instil confidence and integrity in the overall Web3 ecosystem. This is the
premise for modular trust.

Applications are bound only by the imagination. Attestation for unique machines
can be integrated in dApps, as on-chain 2FA authentication for security, for
reward campaigns prone to sybil-attacks, and much more.

Which machines does the demo attest?

The demo for Proof of Machinehood supports a range of machines across different
operating systems. They include:

 * Android: Devices with the capability to perform attestation via Google
   SafetyNet
 * Windows: Devices on Windows Hello uses hardware Trusted Platform Module, with
   attestation performed by TPM.
 * YubiKey: Devices that support the attestation statement in packed format.

Presently, certain device types do not yet support attestation. Check back often
for updates.

How can I try the demo?

Follow along with the steps in the user guide here.

Walk me through how the demo works.

The device being attested generates a key pair which controls the smart wallet
and produces an attestation report about the machine's platform. An on-chain
contract assumes the role of the attestor, and conducts the attestation report's
verification directly on-chain and in public view. Integrity of the verification
process is enforced by the blockchain itself. The outcome is used to mint a
non-transferrable NFT that represents the results of the attestation.

Does the demo ensure privacy?

We’ve taken painstaking effort to protect your privacy.

A new on-chain smart contract wallet associated with the machine is created each
time you attest a device. Information that is disclosed with each attestation is
documented here.

Importantly, for all supported attestations in the demo, the attestation
statement generated does not uniquely identify the device.

Is Proof of Machinehood applicable beyond the demo?

Yes. There are a couple of use cases, and a live example - 1RPC, a private RPC
relay that reduces metadata exposure and prevents tracking from RPC providers.
It has protected over 8.6 billion requests across over 31 networks, with 200,000
daily users.

The underlying relay infrastructure is powered by secure enclaves running in
cloud, supported by attestations that guarantee the integrity of both hardware
and software components. Once end-to-end attestation has been completed within
Automata 2.0, 1RPC will be the first and only RPC relay that provides users with
verification of the attestation and assurance.

What should I expect to learn from the demo?

Expect to gain a clearer understanding of how on-chain verification works within
the context of Automata 2.0. Interacting with the demo also frames the
possibilities for Ethereum as machine-level trust is brought into reality in an
energy-efficient and economically viable manner.
