Many people think that professional astronomers spend their days gazing up at
the night sky through a telescope. But this is far from reality. In this video,
I'll show you what a professional astronomer does at work in a typical day and
explain why it's much more interesting than simply staring through a telescope.

What's the difference between an astronomer and an astrophysicist? NASA's
Michelle Thaller explains that these terms are used interchangeably: both are
physicists who study objects and phenomena in the sky. How can you become an
astronomer? There is a defined path to take: Do an undergrad degree in
astrophysics, physics, mathematics or computer science, then complete a
doctorate in astrophysics. You could also work with astronomers by studying
engineering and building telescopes. In this fascinating explanation of what an
astronomer's day-to-day job actually looks like, Thaller shines a light on the
unexpected skills you might need and answers the question on every ambitious
astronomer-to-be's mind: How will I know what to discover?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHELLE THALLER Dr. Michelle Thaller is an astronomer who studies binary stars
and the life cycles of stars. She is Assistant Director of Science Communication
at NASA. She went to college at Harvard University, completed a post-doctoral
research fellowship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in
Pasadena, Calif. then started working for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL)
Spitzer Space Telescope. After a hugely successful mission, she moved on to
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in the Washington D.C. area. In her
off-hours often puts on about 30lbs of Elizabethan garb and performs intricate
Renaissance dances. For more information, visit NASA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT: MICHELLE THALLER: There are a lot of people that are fascinated by
astronomy, and they think, hey, you can actually get a job where it's your life
to make new discoveries, to actually work with larger NASA missions. So how do
you get this gig? How do you become an astronomer? For some strange reason, I
always wanted to be an astronomer, ever since I was a very small child. I think
for a while I wanted to be an astronaut, and then I actually realized I was
afraid of flying and I did not want to be an astronaut. But I loved space, and I
could just never get the questions out of my head. I was told many times I
didn't have the right personality to be a scientist. That really didn't matter
at all. That turned out not to be true. But here are some of the things that
kind of need to happen. So if you want to become a professional research
astronomer, one of the things you will have to have is a doctorate in astronomy.
Now, there are a lot of other ways to be involved in astronomy. I work with a
lot of people who are engineers who help us build the telescopes or the
instruments that we use. They, for the most part, do not have PhDs. They may
have an undergraduate degree in engineering. Some of them have master's degrees.
But usually, they actually start working in a more practical way, building the
instruments, doing some testing. They start that fairly early in their careers.
But to be an astronomer, you do have to get a doctorate. So there is a fairly
well-defined path for that. So you go through high school, and after high
school, you can apply to any number of colleges that have degree programs in
either physics, or mathematics, or computer science. Or, in some cases, they'll
actually have full degree programs in astronomy or astrophysics. And these days,
those two words, astronomy and astrophysics, are used fairly interchangeably in
a professional setting. So if you're majoring in astronomy, you're basically a
physicist majoring in things that are in the sky. So astrophysicist, astronomer,
pretty much the same thing. So what I did is, I actually did go to a
university—I went to Harvard University—that had a major in astrophysics as an
undergrad. And so we took pretty much all of the physics requirements for a
physics degree, all the math that's involved in that, too, but then there were
specialized classes in topics in astronomy. We'd read papers about the Big Bang.
We'd get together and we'D go to observatories to learn how telescopes work. And
there were classes in things like how does a star work, how does a supernova
explosion work, what is a galaxy like? And these really are physics classes.
They involve a lot of math, usually calculus—figuring out how a galaxy evolves
over time, how all the different stars work, how gravity affects everything. So
there certainly is a good deal of math and physics involved. But then, as you
become a professional astronomer, while you certainly know the basics of that
and... For the full transcript, check out

ASTRONOMER

An astronomer is a scientist in the field of astronomy who studies stars,
planets, moons, comets and galaxies, as well as many other celestial objects —
either in Observational astronomy, in analyzing the data or in theoretical
astronomy. A related but distinct subject, cosmology, is concerned with studying
the Universe as a whole. An astronomer researches the world beyond Earth.

ACADEMIC

Historically, astronomy was more concerned with the classification and
description of phenomena in the sky, while astrophysics attempted to explain
these phenomena and the differences between them using physical laws. Today,
that distinction has mostly disappeared and the terms "astronomer" and
"astrophysicist" are interchangeable. Professional astronomers are highly

LIST OF WILD CARDS CHARACTERS

This is a list of characters from the Wild Cards book series.

MAJOR

ASTRONOMER

The Astronomer is a character from the Wild Cards series of books. He first
appeared in the short story "Pennies from Hell" by Lewis Shiner in Wild Cards
II: Aces High, though his presence was earlier implied in "The Long, Dark Night
of Fortunato" in the first volume of the series. Leader of a cult consisting
mainly of superhuman aces and deformed jokers known as the Egyptian Freemasons.
The Astronomer planned to conquer the world in the aftermath of an invasion by
fungoid aliens called the Swarm. Unknown to him, the Shakti device of the
Egyptian Freemasons lacked a power source and was designed to contact an alien
organization, the Network. Once his plans were foiled, the Astronomer lived only
for revenge.

The Astronomer is an old man (born in 1925), who has thinning white hair, wears
glasses and is best described as "mole-like"; he is also noted as having a
disproportionately large head, the upper part of which enlarges further when he
is fully empowered. He has wiped his own memory of all events prior to becoming
the Astronomer. The Astronomer usually uses a wheelchair, although the proper
use of his Ace powers can allow him to walk. The Astronomer practices a horrific
form of death magic, gaining immense energy through the ritualistic slaying of
his victims (usually young women). He greatly enjoys having Demise slowly kill
the victims, taking their suffering from projected death as his energy source.

QUOTES:

Sam: So what is your plan? What do you want to do?::Maggie: I just want his
dignity, that's all. I want him hopeless, loveless, finished off! I just wish
him ill, very very ill.::Sam: How ill are we talking here?::Maggie: I'm not
saying I want him dead. But, should that occur... people die every day, why
should he be any different? I'm just thinking on my feet, though. I don't have
to decide the death part right now, I can just wait and see how I feel once his
dignity's a thing of the past.

Maggie: You know Sam, French men are very small.::Sam: Yeah?::Maggie: But not
this guy. It's like Godzilla's tail! He could take down Tokyo with that thing!

Maggie: What's your name?::Sam: Mike.::Maggie: What's your name, Mike?::Sam:
Sam.

Sam: I'm the Milky Way Man, and I know everything!

[watching Anton and Linda on the camera obscura, without sound, Sam and Maggie
ad-lib their conversation with French accents]::Sam: Look, my darling, I wanted
to show you how well my hands fit on top of my knees, and also to give you a
little...::Maggie: Get away from me. Get away from me, please. You are
rude.::Sam: Oh, but I love you, my little lamb. I must have you. My love is
throbbing at quite a fevered cadence.::Maggie: But you cannot have me. My love
is reserved for another.::Sam: You cannot mean...?::Maggie: Yes! The Milky Way
Man!::[on the screen, Anton turns away from Linda]::Sam: No, no, no! Anyone but
him! No, this is a man who can predict Alpha Cluster emissions. Next to him, I
am nothing. I'm a worm, I'm a little...::Maggie: Yes, I love his emissions. Not
every man...::[they crack up laughing]::Maggie: ...can be the Milky Way
Man.::Sam: No.::[on the screen, Anton sulks]::Maggie: What will you do
now?::Sam: Forlorn, I will wander the earth by myself - thinking of you and
pausing occasionally to have the sex with the skullses. Heh-heh.::Maggie: That's
good. Now be quiet about that, or I will make you...::[Linda stuffs a pecan into
Anton's mouth, and then licks her fingers]::Maggie: Eat another one of these
pecans!::Sam: I like! Oh, this is very good.::Maggie: Look how I'm licking my
fingers. You like that?::Sam: I like everything, I am French.

Sam: Oh my God! Oh my God he's killing her!::Maggie: Yeah, he's killin' her all
right, and she's loving every minute of it!

[hearing Anton and Linda screaming with ecstasy]::Sam: No, she's not like that!
She likes to make love quiet and slow and gentle...::Maggie: Are you kidding?
That girl of yours is a carnival ride!

Sam: Say what you want, Linda and I are in love.::Maggie: Yeah, except for her
boning my boyfriend, you two are the perfect couple.::Sam: Listen, Catwoman. At
the end of the day, she is coming back to me, and we're gonna be happy! And
where are you gonna be? All alone somewhere, plotting some little revenge
scheme, that's where!::Maggie: Let me tell you something, Sam. Listen to me very
carefully. Are you listening?::Sam: Yes.::Maggie: The only way that girl is
coming back to you is if a blast of semen catapults her across the street and
through the window.

[last lines]::Sam: So I saw this episode of "Lassie" today. And Lassie was
accused of a crime she didn't commit, and the Ranger was coming to put her to
sleep.::Maggie: Uh-oh. How's Lassie going to get out of this one?::Sam: Well,
the little boy told Lassie that she had to go away, far away.::Maggie: For her
own good.::Sam: Yes, but you see, Lassie couldn't leave. Lassie just couldn't
leave the boy.::Maggie: What did he do?::Sam: He told her he never liked her. He
said, "I hate you, Lassie. I hate you. You're a bad dog."::Maggie: That must
have made Lassie sad.::Sam: Yes, it did. Lassie trotted off, very sadly. But you
know what happened? Lassie came home, Maggie.::Maggie: Did the little boy make
it with Lassie?::Sam: Yes. Yes he did.

Maggie: I sleep naked. It's the only way I'm comfortable, so don't think of it
as a come-on, because if you so much as breathe in my direction I will nail your
willy to that beam.

QUOTES:

Shirotsugh Lhadatt: I am the first man in space. Can anyone hear me?

Shirotsugh Lhadatt: Can anyone hear me? I'm the first man in space. If you look
up, well, maybe you'll see it. Or at least please listen. We've left the oceans
and climbed above the mountains. I'm flying. We've found the untouched realm of
God. You have to look now it's your only chance. Nothing is here yet, not even
air or water to ruin. Soon the next man will follow to touch it, and another,
and in all the rush we may again destroy it. Maybe our killing comes from the
madness of being confined? Please listen! There's no more reason to kill because
we don't have any more borders now! Can anyone hear me? If you can hear me, then
pray. The humblest of all things, the most noble. Pray for each step you take.
Make a path that's safe so those who follow shall never stumble. Dear God,
please give us your mercy. Mercy for we are lost. Forgive the irresponsible, the
trivial men who beg you from the dark for the forgiveness of your light.

Shirotsugh Lhadatt: You Prayed? That doesn't stop them from bulldozing your damn
house!

Marty: Sir, the launch pad's as ready as it's ever going to be.::General
Khaidenn: Moment of truth... Return to countdown!

Shirotsugh Lhadatt: Aw hell, I give up. "And what I see now is - " tanks
everwhere!::Marty: Open your eyes, you damn idiot, they're fakes!::Shirotsugh
Lhadatt: Fakes? [singing] All around us there's nothing but fakes... Whoa! Soar
with me on the biggest fake of all!

Shirotsugh Lhadatt: Y'know, on paper it didn't look so big.::Marty: Ideas grow;
sometimes bigger than life.

Dr. Gnomm: I'll have you know that I was flying rockets before you were even an
itch in your daddy's crotch!

General Khaidenn: Enough of this! Come down from there at once! We have to do
this. I hate it as much as you do. I thought we could really do it this time. We
can't do anything about this. Just forget it. Risking your lives? Well, it's
just not worth it.::Shirotsugh Lhadatt: I don't believe this! What are you going
to do? Just quit? If we stop here then we are a bunch of fools! That's plain
stupid! Quit before the fight even starts? Where's the glory in that? What we've
done is incredible. I'll still do it even if it means I die in the process!
Here's your chance to be in the history books instead of just reading them.
There may never be another chance like this again. Anyone who isn't with me can
leave. I will do this! I am goddamn ready do do this! All sections talk to me!

Shirotsugh Lhadatt: Can't you have fun? I think that by now you and God should
have worked out some kind of compromise.::Riquinni Nonderaiko: Oh you
do?::Shirotsugh Lhadatt: [gulps] Come on, be reasonable!::Riquinni Nonderaiko:
What do you mean "be reasonable?" The world is all messed up because... because
of that kind of compromise!::Shirotsugh Lhadatt: What's so bad about that?

Marty: Here's the pilot. Does he get a say in any of this?::Rocket Scientist:
[to Shiro] And what is YOUR opinion?::Shirotsugh Lhadatt: I'd kinda like to live
a while, so I vote for the safest way.::Rocket Scientist: Bah! Undue
concern.::Marty: Oh, minor detail.

(actor), Mason Adams (actor),

Plot: Now come into his full knowledge and power, the Anti-Christ in the body of
Damien Thorne is about to strike his final blow. The Christ-child has been born
again, on the Angel Isle, Great Britain (Scotland, England & Wales). The plan is
simple, find the male children born on the specified day, and kill them all.

Keywords: 666, accident, adoption, ambassador, american-flag, anal-rape, angel,
antichrist, apocalypse, atrocity
Genres: Horror,
Taglines: The power of evil is no longer in the hands of a child. The Last
Chapter in the Omen Trilogy The ultimate confrontation between good and evil!

QUOTES:

Damien Thorn: Nazarene, you have won... nothing...

Damien Thorn: Nazarene, charlatan, what can you offer humanity? Since the hour
you vomited forth from the gaping wound of a woman, you have done nothing but
drown man's soaring desires in a deluge of sanctimonious morality. You've
inflamed the pubertal mind of youth with your repellent dogma of original sin.
And now you absolve in denying them the ultimate joy beyond death by destroying
me ? But you will fail, Nazarene, as you have always failed. We were both
created in man's image, but while you were born of an impotent god, I was
concieved of a jackal. Born of Satan, the desolate one. Your pain on the cross
was but a splinter compared to the agony of my father. Cast out of heaven, the
fallen angel, banished, reviled. I will drive deeper the thorns into your rancid
carcass, you profaner of vices. Cursed Nazarene. Satan, I will avenge thy
torment, by destroying the Christ forever.

Damien Thorn: Suffer the little children to come unto me. Your words, Nazarene.
Not mine.

Damien Thorn: If Abraham was ready to slay his own son for the love of his God,
why won't you do the same for the love of mine?

Damien Thorn: You, my disciples will truly inherit this Earth!

Damien Thorn: Disciples of the Watch; I stand before you; in the name of the one
who was cast out from Heaven, but is alive in me.

Damien Thorn: "And it shall come to pass that in the end days the beast shall
reign 100 score and 30 days and nights. And the faithful shall cry unto the
Lord, 'Wherefore art thou in the day of evil?' And the Lord shall hear their
prayers. And out of the Angel Isle he shall bring forth the Deliverer; the holy
Lamb of God who shall do battle with the beast. And shall destroy him." Only it
won't be the beast that is destroyed, it'll be the Nazarene.

Damien Thorn: Oh my Father, Lord of Silence, Supreme God of Desolation, though
mankind reviles yet aches to embrace, strengthen my purpose to save the world
from a second ordeal of Jesus Christ and his grubby mundane creed. Show man
instead the raptures of Thy kingdom. Infuse in him the grandeur of melancholy,
the divinity of loneliness, the purity of evil, the paradise of pain.

Damien Thorn: He was born last night... I feel his presence. Like a virus, a
parasite feeding on my energy; trying to drain me of power. For everyday that he
lives and grows, my force will weaken.

Damien Thorn: I now command you to seek out and destroy the Nazarene child. Slay
the Nazarene... and I shall reign forever. Fail... and I perish.

   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the difference between an astronomer and an astrophysicist?
In this fascinating explanation of what
an astronomer's day-to-day job actually looks like, Thaller shines a light on
the unexpected skills you might need and answers the question on every
ambitious astronomer-to-be's mind: How will I know what to discover?
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHELLE THALLER Dr. Michelle Thaller is an astronomer who studies binary
stars and the life cycles of stars. She is Assistant Director of Science
Communication at NASA. She went to college at Harvard University, completed a
post-doctoral research fellowship at the California Institute of Technology
(Caltech) in Pasadena, Calif. then started working for the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory's (JPL) Spitzer Space Telescope. After a hugely successful
mission, she moved on to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in the
Washington D.C. area. In her off-hours often puts on about 30lbs of
Elizabethan garb and performs intricate Renaissance dances. For more
   information, visit NASA.
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT: MICHELLE THALLER: There are a lot of people that are fascinated
by astronomy, and they think, hey, you can actually get a job where it's your
life to make new discoveries, to actually work with larger NASA missions. So
how do you get this gig? How do you become an astronomer? For some strange
reason, I always wanted to be an astronomer, ever since I was a very small
child. I think for a while I wanted to be an astronaut, and then I actually
realized I was afraid of flying and I did not want to be an astronaut. But I
loved space, and I could just never get the questions out of my head. I was
told many times I didn't have the right personality to be a scientist. That
really didn't matter at all. That turned out not to be true. But here are
some of the things that kind of need to happen. So if you want to become a
professional research astronomer, one of the things you will have to have is
a doctorate in astronomy. Now, there are a lot of other ways to be involved
in astronomy. I work with a lot of people who are engineers who help us build
the telescopes or the instruments that we use. They, for the most part, do
not have PhDs. They may have an undergraduate degree in engineering. Some of
them have master's degrees. But usually, they actually start working in a
more practical way, building the instruments, doing some testing. They start
that fairly early in their careers. But to be an astronomer, you do have to
get a doctorate. So there is a fairly well-defined path for that. So you go
through high school, and after high school, you can apply to any number of
colleges that have degree programs in either physics, or mathematics, or
computer science. Or, in some cases, they'll actually have full degree
programs in astronomy or astrophysics. And these days, those two words,
astronomy and astrophysics, are used fairly interchangeably in a professional
setting. So if you're majoring in astronomy, you're basically a physicist
majoring in things that are in the sky. So astrophysicist, astronomer, pretty
much the same thing. So what I did is, I actually did go to a university—I
went to Harvard University—that had a major in astrophysics as an undergrad.
And so we took pretty much all of the physics requirements for a physics
degree, all the math that's involved in that, too, but then there were
specialized classes in topics in astronomy. We'd read papers about the Big
Bang. We'd get together and we'D go to observatories to learn how telescopes
work. And there were classes in things like how does a star work, how does a
supernova explosion work, what is a galaxy like? And these really are physics
classes. They involve a lot of math, usually calculus—figuring out how a
galaxy evolves over time, how all the different stars work, how gravity
affects everything. So there certainly is a good deal of math and physics
involved. But then, as you become a professional astronomer, while you
certainly know the basics of that and... For the full transcript, check out

to a university—I went to Harvard University—that had a major in
astrophysics as an undergrad. And so we took pretty much all of the physics
requirements for a physics degree, all the math that's involved in that,
too, but then there were specialized classes in topics in astronomy. We'd
read papers about the Big Bang. We'd get together and we'D go to
observatories to learn how telescopes work. And there were classes in
things like how does a star work, how does a supernova explosion work, what
is a galaxy like? And these really are physics classes. They involve a lot
of math, usually calculus—figuring out how a galaxy evolves over time, how
all the different stars work, how gravity affects everything. So there
certainly is a good deal of math and physics involved. But then, as you
become a professional astronomer, while you certainly know the basics of
that and... For the full transcript, check out https:// bigthink. com/ videos/

Professional astronomers are highly
educated individuals who typically have a PhD in physics or astronomy and are
employed by research institutions or universities. They spend the majority of
their time working on research, although they quite often have other duties such
as teaching, building instruments, or aiding in the operation of an observatory.
