But there are new things. The amount and speed of international travel is unprecedented in the history of mammals on earth. Birds might still rival us (but also go through massive swings of disease), but the amount of difficulty in putting down a plague has gotten exponentially more difficult even within the past generation. There has always been wars, but the existence of doomsday devices only dates to the 1970s or so. Before that point you could watch as much of the developed world destroyed itself but the human species would live on, missing perhaps some big chunk of civilization(similar to how there were craters were cradles of civilization were pre-WW2). That is something new. What we are doing to our atmosphere is also new: chances are good that by the end of their life, just breathing outside air will be enough to significantly slow your thinking, like being in a closed garage with a running vehicle. That's the best case reasonable scenario. The bad case scenarios (1 in 20 level) they may not even make it to adulthood, if they are in the northern hemisphere, just from the atmosphere becoming completely unliveable. Condemning more children to face an unliveable world is something we never had to face: for all the problems we have to face, at least we can get a fresh breath of air outside, when the better part of the canadian shield isn't on fire at least. Starvation existed in many places and times, too, but at the same time; we chose to deal with that by just letting people starve. That there was a conscious choice by a lot of people to just let people die. Good people, a lot of them. And then some people who used to be good people, before they went through that period of their life. I look around me and I see clear signs that the city around me, and the people around me, are as broken as it is/they are because people chose to not care about it, or the people around them. It's like, it would be abandoned if there were somewhere to go. Some parts of it are de facto abandoned. And that cancer is spreading, as the larger choices of economics and geopolitics play themselves out over people on the ground. That when I count 50 businesses closed in a row, on a weekday, and then count 50 unemployed people sitting outside of the bar/injection site, i see that things can be better, but aren't.
