When Yanyi wrote The Year of Blue Water, his 2019 poetry collection that won the
Yale Series of Younger Poets prize, he didn’t want to educate people about his
experiences as a transgender Chinese American man. He didn’t realize he was
writing a book at all. At the time, he was just keeping notes of stray thoughts
that he wanted to hold onto.

Nezhukumatathil says that by taking time to consciously focus on nature, we can
center our minds, embrace beauty, and find joy in the complexities around us.
