I honor each individual’s mental health journey by carefully adapting my therapeutic services and interventions to meet the needs of each person coming through my door while promoting the tools, resilience, and courage needed to live a fulfilling life–despite fear and anxiety. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AREAS OF SPECIALTY OCD & OCD-related Conditions OCD is characterized by unwanted intrusive thoughts, fear-based obsessions, and repetitive behaviors and/or mental rituals that may or may not be observable. The cycle is distressing, and when left untreated, it can become debilitating. Unfortunately, most people go 9-17 years before receiving a proper OCD diagnosis and treatment. This is probably because of the shame many people have about discussing OCD, the lack of education and awareness about what OCD is (and is not), and the fact that most graduate schools do not adequately prepare therapists on how to properly diagnose and treat OCD. The media often portrays OCD as a condition that describes people who are tidy or germ-adverse. While these things can absolutely be true for some people with OCD, there are myriad sub-types of OCD that too-often fall under the radar. Some common sub-types include illness-related OCD (healthy anxiety), existential OCD, relationship OCD, and harm OCD. You can read more about the subtypes here. Talk therapy and OCD do tend to not mix well, and it can sometimes make OCD symptoms even worse. This is why it is so important for people with OCD to find the appropriate treatment. Anxiety Conditions Anxiety conditions are primarily rooted in cycles of fear, uncertainty, and attempts at control. While these experiences are universal, those struggling with anxiety experience them more intensely and more frequently. When anxiety is left untreated, it can become overwhelming and impact all areas of one’s life. We are living in an anxiety and stress epidemic, and according to the American Psychological Association, stress, trauma, and anxiety has only worsened in recent years. Many people with anxiety tend to avoid the things that make them anxious, which at first, can seem like a good idea. However, this strategy usually makes anxiety worse in the long run, leading to concerns with self-esteem, relationships, and overall quality of life. Therapy can help you establish the self-compassion, emotional awareness, and practical skills needed to stop anxiety from running the show. Complex Trauma Complex trauma is a specific type of trauma that develops over time through several adverse experiences in our primary or early relationships. Some common experiences that lead to complex trauma include facing family addiction or dysfunction, religious or pervasive shaming, neglect, witnessing or experiencing domestic violence, sudden death or loss, and being bullied. Those of us who have had these types of experiences are at an increased risk for developing complex trauma. When left untreated, we can struggle with low self-esteem, painful relationship patterns, chronic self-doubt, chronic pain, fear, nightmares, insomnia, and more. It is not uncommon for people to struggle for years with complex trauma and not know that they have it. This is because complex trauma can subconsciously play out in our lives, and it can resemble symptoms of other conditions, like anxiety or depression. Fortunately, we live during a time where we know that healing from complex trauma is possible when the right support is in place. Neurodivergence Being neurodivergent can feel like this: How are they sitting still? Does anyone else hear that noise, or is it just me? These lights are really bright in here. Can they notice that I’m anxious? Do not let other people notice. Think of something to say, quick! I feel so awkward, people must notice. (Goes to the bathroom to catch a break…and maybe cry.) It can also feel like this: Finally, a place where I can move around, talk or not, make eye contact or not. Turns out that I am not the only one who gets social anxiety or is sensitive to noises and lighting! Wow, I even get to talk about my special interests here. Wait, they have fidgets?! I feel like I can be myself here. Neurodiversity is is about understanding that our differences are not an issue. When we feel disempowered, it is often because of our environment and nonsensical social demands. If you put a fish in a dessert, it will die. If you put a fish in a lake, it will thrive. Neurodivergent people thrive in the right environments. This is not to minimize that being neurodivergent comes with its challenges, because it certainly does. Finding support from a neurodivergent therapist and community can help us learn how to be more compassionate to ourselves, discover that we are less alone than we think, and empower us to advocate for our needs so that we can thrive in environments that make sense to us.
