The i revealed that a cyber attack penetrated the Foreign Office’s internal systems. However, the devastating and "embarrassing" hack was kept secret from the public for years. It is thought that the Chinese and Russian hackers did not work together but instead accessed the systems at the same time in separate attacks. Britain's adversaries made it into the internal systems but were unable to access classified information, according to a GCHQ source. While the information was not classified, it may have put diplomats in hostile environments at risk. A source at the UK’s intelligence, security and cyber agency said the attack likely came from an official "accidentally” downloading malware hidden in an email. A GCHQ insider claimed that the Government kept the hack under wraps due to the “embarrassment” of the large-scale hack. They told the i: “At one point we believe both were on there. "It was very embarrassing and caused a great stir in government because they didn’t know whether they should admit it or not. Earlier this year the UK’s cyber security agency urged operators of critical national infrastructure, including energy and telecommunications networks, to prevent Chinese hackers from hiding on their systems.
