Skip to content ABDELRAHMAN MOHAMED My Experience * Home * WELCOME! Today, I will take you through my honest opinion, experiences, learnings, thinking process, research experiences and decisions I had to make involving Graphic Designs thinking and reflection from my perspectives along with some others along the way. Hope it would help you or vent some of your thoughts that you didn’t express fearing embarrassment or failure or judgment! Enjoy! WHAT DID YOU DISCOVER AFTER BECOMING A GD STUDENT? (REALITY VS EXPECTATION) Looking back at the previous works that I have done as I graphic designer, the experience going through it firsthand was not what I expected. For me, of course based on the course title of graphic design, I expected work on the laptop and express my ideas and thoughts into a design however, the amount of different softwares that needed to be learned and applied in the modules were too much and I thought graphic design would have the adaptation of arts or fine arts that I would select and express in a simple way. I found out that I have entered to level 4 straight away not knowing or advised by anyone that I have to go through all the basics first (in the foundation year!) , Things were very stressful for me until I realized what I am missing. I started to work in two parallel ways , learn what I am miss slowly and grab as much as I can from where I am. Another issue I had to face was the type of feedback that I was getting. All my life I am used to getting S.M.A.R.T. feedback (Specific, Measurable, Achievable or Attainable, Realistic or Respectful and Time-based) but that wasn’t case most of the time. Getting stressed and being afraid of being embarrassed, I have decided to carryon learning on my own and forget about the assumptions made on me or my colleagues. All my expectations towards everything about graphic design completely flipped and it was definitely the most stressful and hardworking modules/year I have ever been through to the extent that I thought of changing the major and the university by mid-term, but a discussion with my father who gave me the freedom to make my own choice with no pressure, highlighting few points to me, made me go through this challenge and see it through to the end. Now, I am happy that I have made this decision, and what I really like that I keep learning new things I did not know of every day, not only about graphic design or software usage but the researches, communication skills, ideas, different markets, different businesses, psychology and a lot more than just lectures and feedback. I learned the process of thinking carefully at the beginning of everything I do and have a plan. The plans didn’t always go the way I was hoping for and that was okay too. Nothing goes as per our plans, what matter is to keep going not necessarily from the beginning, as long as we see the plan to the end. Bottom line is what I discovered was a wealth of knowledge evolving around graphic design and consequently real life. JOURNAL This is something I never thought I would do but I’m doing it anyways. Thinking of becoming a graphic designer, study it academically, started when I was a young teen with my love to colors, graphics, nature and drawing different shapes and have always thought as I always heard from my family that simplicity and modesty are the ultimate sophistication, however that quote was meant to be used in my behavior with other people in life. I have never prepared or realized what was really required to become a graphic designer until I joined the university that things started to be clearer. The amount of research I have done were huge and were confusing at the beginning. My main struggle at the research was to understand and link many terms, or big words. I got depressed and thought it didn’t make sense until I had a few discussions with family, friends, and lecturers, then things started to make more sense and made me eager to learn more. The main thing I have learned is to always have a plan of action before the start of any project. Research and gathering enough RELATIVE project information helps understanding the project question(s) or the problem in hand. Planning help have a clearer target, prepare timeline to deliver anticipating few issues along the way as I learned no plan goes as I want or desire. The most important part after planning and research is to brainstorm ideas and get feedback from different sources to get work started on the project. Two quotes helped me get to this opinion one is” a problem well stated is a problem half solved” Charles Kettering and the second quote is “To ask the right question is already half a solution to a problem” Carl Jung. We value simple things because they do all the things we need easily and none of the things we don’t. Simplicity is harmonious. Even Leonardo Da Vinci said “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” This is one of my favorite quotes, and it plays on the idea that being simple isn’t banal, or boring it’s elegant. Believe me it took a long while, depressions and stress to clearly realize all of this now, so I would advise you to be patient and always have hope because there is always light at the end of the tunnel. to get to this point, there will be bumps here and there but you will meet great people out there that has the exact goal as you and that you will be able to get out there along with them and explore greatness firsthand. #JOURNAL 2 COVID-19 with no doubt has changed all our normal behaviors and daily routines. For me, I was always following the required necessary precautions and for over 20 months, I had never tested positive. Until last December, I got infected, and it was a very painful stressful experience that I wish no one goes through it. Being isolated for 3 weeks, have no taste for anything, always feverish and weak plus thoughts of my assignments and pending work, learnings, feedback, and delivery timelines made it even worse. I was so stressed and overwhelmed by the idea of not finishing the assignments on time or learning what I need to finish by the deadline and most of all the idea of being of failing and being embarrassed. Until my father told me, it is okay to be sick, people get sick all the time for different reasons, and we always do what we can within our control. We don’t always control the outcome, and this could be a very good experience for you to learn something new about life. This discussion made feel a little better and I did what I could with what I have learned, and the results didn’t make me feel so bad, however I felt embarrassed, and I decided to do better and put more efforts in the next assignments. Lesson learned is that life will always be full of challenges and obstacles not planned for and I must accept and face them to reach my goal at the end.! #REFLECT (SUMMATIVE FEEDBACK FOR 4015 & 4016) I am very simple down to earth person, love arts and drawing along with other things. I am very impatient and get uncomfortable and stressed when work is not completed on time, I have difficulties asking for help specially from people with attitude or sarcasm. To avoid getting stressed, I’ve started being more proactive and paying attention to how I am reacting to make sure I am being motivated and becoming more efficient. I also started asking for help from people who are knowledgeable, kind, and willing to help. I have created a lot of sketches for ideas of design so I can add those into the softwares being used in this module. I have difficulties using all the adobe suite software, putting those sketches to actual design but I have focused on two of the suite software through tutorial videos and practicing every day for two hours. I have different feedback on my work some were positive, and some were very depressing I believe it’s the way and style we get the feedback that makes the positive impression! Effective planning with time management were a great key for my current module and unlike my previous one which was a hectic also chaotic experience. I have learned that when I get stuck, I go back to the basics. For graphic design basics talk about no more than 3-4 colors and use typography hierarchy and a simple illustration, I did that many times and it seems to be working fine. Looking back at the two courses assignments I had been through and thinking about what really happened, I clearly realized now that for sure things could have gone a lot better. There were things within my power and control and others beyond my control. My first reaction to what happened was not good at all, I was overwhelmed by embarrassment to the extent of thinking to change the university and the career. However, after few discussions with all my family and different advice I was given, I have realized decided that I CAN and WILL carry on becoming a graphic designer as I have always wanted. I feel better venting those reasons out maybe it could help someone else, and These are not excuses to make me feel better but rather points I have taken into consideration and started working on with a plan. The first reason in my opinion is that I have joined the university to year one straight to level 4 not to the foundation year and this was not my fault. I came to admission, and I was told straight away that I am eligible to join year one without going through foundation year based on my final grades and ILETS score. No one told me that there were 3 levels of graphic design that I must go through and learn first. The second reason was all the adobe software suite that I had no idea about and had to learn by watching different videos on my own, this idea of learning has created more issues, it was very time consuming and was not the right way to learn since I was scattered around many software not focusing on learning one or two. Also, time constrain to go through a proper course to master the software at the time. The third issue was getting infected with COVID-19 4 weeks before the deadline of the assignments, missing too many lectures and feedback. The main factor in my decision to carry on was not to feel the complete failure and not to waste a full year of my life without learning from the experience. I must thank my parents who were very supportive in any decision I was going to make. I also must thank my lecturers who helped highlighting my issues in a professional way. On a positive note, and based on the work I have done, I realized that I have always tried and didn’t give up even without knowing all those reasons. I stood out, I tried and added as much design as I could, did a lot of research before beginning to work to make sure the information and design is expressive and simple to understand as well from my point of view. RESPOND TO YOUR OWN SELF-EVALUATION TO: WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT YOU? THE WAY YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE PERCEIVED BY OTHERS. When I think about responding to myself evaluation, I can’t help but thinking of Feedback and how effective it is in this process. I have learned experienced several types of feedback till today, some were positive, some were professional some were motivating, and some were demoralizing and depressing (careless, sarcastic, not respectable, or judgmental). I understand that people are different in delivering what they want or how they deliver their feedback to anyone. As a student, it is my right to get proper specific feedback, which was not always the case, however I will talk about the positive part.! While working and showing my work to others around me, they would all say that I’m creative in a way when it comes to designing and displaying information along with it and that my work is good but missing something or need a different touch to express what I mean clearly. I know that there is always room for improvement but without proper specific feedback how could I improve. Those were feedbacks I have been continuously been hearing every time when I have work on something and show it to certain people (family, colleagues or friends). As in life we all need guidance and feedback to improve ourselves and be better and so with graphic design or any other aspect in life. S.M.A.R.T feedback is the guide we need; it will erase our fears or doubts and give us directions on the way forward. Now getting the same information over and over have been a very frustrating experience despite that I actually try to put in the effort and focus but it is something to learn in life where you look back and do better and to try and avoid those mistakes. #EXPOSE This design was made by MuchaTseBle based on the great wave of Kanagawa. A picture I found on Pinterest, and I liked the details it has. The huge waves and a storm with a moon in a clear night sky. I get the feeling of rage and anger expressed by the storm and the big waves and the opposite feeling of calmness and quietness with the clear night sky with moonlight. This is a piece of art that was done after the great wave of Kanagawa. This design was created digitally using lines, colors, bits of space, a slight bit of light, and shapes. The colors and shapes come together nicely representing angry waves/storms and clear sky with moonlight. I like how consistent the designer was making it and didn’t use much color so you could have different emotions , anger or calmness or a mix of both! . There is a sense of movement within the design since the waves heighten, forming different mountains , moving around the still moon in the clear sky as if the moon is trying to calm this wave of anger! The elements of the design were good and worked in harmony expressing mixed feeling and emotions opposite each other. In a way, it delivers a message of calmness / soothing feeling and the moon in the clear sky represents that and the opposite way you see anger and rage with huge waves and storms. I believe the design is aesthetically pleasing. #EXPOSE2 I liked both designs here, what attracted my attention was the similarities in trying to find an identity, one asking many questions, trying to face his demons or true self or negative side of himself with the shadows and the question marks and the other has a fingerprint but no identity, confused or can’t see his true self. Our shadow, a term coined by depth psychologist Carl Jung, is the part of ourselves which we hide in our daily life – and we may not even be aware of. We either reject and/or repress those shadow aspects of our personalities which we find unsavory, and if we don’t immediately recognize the toxic traits in ourselves for which this applies, then chances are they are indeed being repressed. The question marks are a true expression of this confusion, many unanswered questions get bigger and bigger demanding answers But that’s okay – nobody is immune; it’s part of being a human being. And by being here and reading about it you’re taking the first step towards doing something positive and proactive about it. Challenging our shadows is a self development task, because it essentially means looking right into the heart of the most shameful and vulnerable parts of ourselves. I had to read and research a lot to understand the psychology behind it as it is not only a design with unknown face and now it does make sense. Now I wonder why I got attracted to these two designs! Just by the look of it by itself you already get the feeling of both designs are based one thing and one message and that relates to our true identity and facing our shadows or negative side of us and I believe the one with the many colors on the face is a nice detail, it compliments the design and the person within design represent our uncertainty , facing the negative part that is hidden with us and confusions. Found on Pinterest. BEAUTY Beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. It is commonly described as a feature of objects that makes these objects pleasurable to perceive. Such objects include landscapes, sunsets, humans and works of art. Beauty, together with art and taste, is the main subject of aesthetics, one of the major branches of philosophy multifaceted concept of beauty shows that perception can change depending on the individual, society and/or historical period. Physical attractiveness does create a powerful first impression on the mind, so powerful in fact that we may go much beyond looks and simply start generating assumptions even if they prove not to be true. our perception of beauty produces feelings we associate with happiness – like calmness, appreciation, reflection and hope. So in essence, experiencing beauty alters our emotions and makes us feel happier. I agree with the article in what it’s trying to say and I believe beauty is important use when it comes to design though it doesn’t always have to be about beauty and we can look at the design in many different ways other than saying “This design has the perfect principles and goes together well and it’s beautiful”. However, I do believe that it’s an eye holder and crucial to look out for. In design beauty should become functional delivering pleasure feeling and relieved eyesight and emotion. THE NEW UGLY In my opinion, I believe this article is more expressive, it goes in detail and straight to the point of what exactly is the new ugly. Darius Ou said something in the article and that is “sometimes when you follow the rules of graphic design, it gets a bit loose in a way and that you’ll have to break the rules”. I agree with that statement because when you think about it like following the rules that lead back to the past 20 century would be strange and would feel like that we are following it blindly for no reason however the rules doesn’t have to be broken more like add new rules or if possible evolve them. An itching for “ugly” could be seen as cyclical, in design circles at least. As Stephen Heller wrote in Eye back in 1993, “Designers used to stand for beauty and order. Now beauty is passé and ugliness is smart.” Heller sets out the problems with defining “ugly,” situating it in opposition to “classical” design rules around “adherence to the golden mean and a preference for balance and harmony.”This idea of ugliness as a form of rule-breaking can be traced further back in time to the design language of punk in the mid- to late 1970s, which echoed similarly establishment-baiting artistic movements like Dadaism in its use of re-appropriated letterforms and images. I like the idea that he said that “the new ugly doesn’t have to be ugly it just needs to be remembered and also different and I find to be unique in its own way. Working with the new ugly and applying it to design is breaking the normal classical rules, I find the idea to be different and unique. Maybe it’s something that many should try to do and evaluate themselves. #ARCHIVE Paula Scher Paula Scher became the art director here and began designing her first album covers and had the responsibility of designing up to 150 album covers a year. One of Paula’s greatest achievements was being the first designer to create a new identity and different promotional graphics for The Public Theater in 1994. Paula Scher is also known as an artist for her large paintings of maps covered with closely packed hand painted labelling and information. Scher began painting these colourful typographic maps of the world in 1990. They consisted of the world’s continents, countries, islands, streets and neighbourhoods. Steven Heller Heller has written, co-authored, and/or edited more than 150 books about design and popular culture. David Carson He is a designer based on making it his own way and showing his work of messy design can be very unique and can really work in the world of graphic design. Paul Rand Paul Rand was a popular twentieth century American graphic designer and art director. He produced logos for large companies such as IBM, ABC, UPS, or Steve Jobs’ NeXT, still legendary and almost unchanged to this day. By creating complete brand identities, Paul Rand transformed corporate communication in North America. He managed to persuade companies, almost on his own, that design can be a powerful business tool. Knowing about Paul Rand, based on his reputation being popular on making his own iconic design logos and the way he does his work which are: Asymmetrical layouts, sans serif typography, photography and montage. Having that kind of “recipe” to what exactly he did to make his work spread popularity I felt like in a way I can be related to him and I’d like to think of him as a role model or influence to me because he was one the most popular designers out there rest his soul and I feel like I could have learned from him because of his own creativity when making iconic logos in his own design it’s one of those things where I’d like to try for myself to see how it would go. Interview with Charles s. Anderson I like how his origin of graphic design and his origin point was that he met a retired artist which was Clyde Lewis that they’ve been friends with and ever since he passed away Charles continued to carry his own work and equipment as the starting point to expand his own career and also his inspiration as well. I find it agreeable that he said that graphic design is a viable art and has most definitely evolved throughout the years however, I don’t believe it can be used for corporate but also can be used for any product businesses too. I believe we can all agree as designers that it would be crucial like Charles said to have the ability that is obtained to illustrate whether being on a paper as a bunch of sketches and ideas or drawing digitally on a software and it is definitely the most significant steps to widen perspective and get more ideas out. After scrolling through the designs that Charles has made in his websites and or article, I believe of what he says is full proof and that is because the only things he doesn’t want for his projects that he made is to be boring or predictable and when I saw it I thought that it went way past that and seeing it shows what inspiration he tackled through his work and made it into a pop art design and it really does stand out and peaks my interest a lot because I find that when you look for inspiration such as logos and whatnot and try to make that logo in your own image, your own idea added onto it really turn out to be very unique which is one of the beauty of graphic design. WHEN LESS WAS MORE After reading the article nothing much is being said except of person talking their experiences going through being a graphic designer and having really bad luck with that referring to themself as a graphic design “slave” which I honestly I do not know what it means however, if I had to guess it’d have to mean that the designer worked hard on their projects and at the end it wasn’t how the designer expected to be in the end and would have to end up doing more to get the right results which is understandable. I do agree with the fact that when doing a piece of work or a full one for that matter it would represent ourselves since you as a person with the creativity and illustration has added that into a paper or digitally. #VISUALIZE 1- Your favorite designer Aside from the iconic designer Paul Rand. Personally, my favorite designer has to be David Carson and the reason why that is, is that he showed the world that designing in a messy style is a very special variant of making graphic design and that you would think that making a messy style kind of design would not be sufficient but it works really well and it kind of resembles in a way of a collage design of sorts. Carson’s way of design has given me a feeling I would not thought I’d feel based around graphic design or design in general and that feeling would the sense of freedom and why I say that is because the way I can explain it is that when attempting to do his own ways of designing, it mostly gives you more opportunities in brainstorming in what exactly comes together well in a messy style and that you can make the design in however shape or form you want it to be to make it turn out a bit identical in the way he did it except it is your idea implemented by using his way of inspiration thus, that is why David Carson is pretty much a role model and or idol to look up to. 2- Your dream career Now, besides the four design giants I’ve read about and don’t get me wrong they alongside with their work they’ve showed throughout the years, honestly like Steven Heller and seeing his career path and what he did, I’d like to be a designer based around typography and illustration and the reason why I’d like to choose that dream career path is because when I have time in my hands and that I can do whatever, I usually look up videos about typography, follow the steps, see what details can be added so I can follow that along the way and delve deeper more about typography and what it holds because like colors it has many varieties of different fonts and you can see what works best along with the colors as well. Ever since I looked through and learning about graphic design to this day and still am, I believe typography is one of if not, the most essential element that stood out towards me and there’s so much to learn and a lot I wish to discover about typography before stepping into that dream career path ahead. #INTERVIEW What is your project brief? My project brief is a musical film festival in Cairo and it takes place during the autumn season. The team and I came up with a festival brand name called Rhapsody. The festival will be held for 7 days every year. The most important thing you should know about us is that we love musical drama. The festival is broadcasting musical films from different parts of the world (cosmopolitan) to offer a different experience to our audiences and guests. It will take place in the opera house in zamalek from the 9th to the 16th of December of 2022. How did you get the idea? It was a team effort and brainstorming sessions where we exchanged ideas and we came up with the name and logo idea. The logo was based on the display font “Kare ” and inspired by the music notes on a musical sheet. Simple and reflect our love of music and inspiration. I was given the autumn season which was a great time for our guests to travel, visit Egypt and join us during the festival. What did you research about? I looked at different festivals from around the world and in Egypt. I looked up the different festival events, superstars, statistics, awards, red carpet experiences, magazines, news, and of course different opening and closing ceremonies. What I really liked about the research was the exposure to market segmentation (geography and demography) especially the age group (over 58 % in average were in the age group of 21-39 based on different festivals which was an excellent indication) to target in different marketing materials. I also got some exposure to distribution companies, sponsors, volunteers, and hosting superstars. It was a lot of information to go through, but it paved the way for my exposure and understanding of festivals to a great extent. I learned about the 12 archetypes, and it was obvious that the innocent, welcoming and trendy is the type to go. I have created a document guide asking and answering lots of questions and making notes to help me understand all the project aspects. Have you faced any struggles? Sure, I had some struggles throughout my work. My biggest struggle was learning how to build the website and static and dynamic HTML coding, and CSS coding because a website requires a lot of accurate coding and to make the content in the website position and information correctly. Watched many tutorial videos, read many documents, and completed the coding courses through Academy code. Then came the visual code studio and I started to put my learning (still learning) into my website. I have looked on other film festivals websites to basically learn their content depth and how they are showing it. I believe they are using some other software other than visual coding. The marketing campaign and expressions were also difficult to understand at the beginning and how to make the festival agenda. Like or dislike about the project? I liked the learning process during the research and the amount of ideas I have sketched and played with designing posters and billboards (which were not all developed to the end though!). I liked thinking of new creative slogans and taglines for the festival. What I dislike about it is the duration and how much it holds, and the amount of feedback stacked on one another towards me, and I understand that feedback (which were not specific in some cases) to help improve but at time constraints can be very frustrating. What was your role in teamwork? When I was in the team, my role was to provide them with as many ideas that were on my mind and to illustrate to them as much as I could. Festival values, benefits and advantages of the autumn season were my responsibility before we started working individually. I have demonstrated my perspective to musical film festivals along with the names, tags, and slogans as well. #INTERVIEW WITH MALAK WASSIM How did you got the idea? Spring was the chosen season for my festival and I felt like a theme that goes along with the atmosphere made perfect sense. According to the minor research I conducted, spring signifies new beginnings which in my case had to be related to women empowerment in one way or another. Usually, a person’s spark is lit up by another in terms of inspiration and motivation when it comes to new beginnings. I had to find a genre that fits this idea so I thought to myself “how about someone else’s life story?” and that’s how I settled on documentaries. What did you research about? I started by researching art concepts which I thought looked cool, but after putting the one I liked the most into practice, it didn’t work out the way I wanted it to. Then, I researched all sorts of film festivals then narrowed it down to women film festivals to see how some certain ideas were implemented. I wanted to make sure that my poster communicated the message of the festival on its own without any explanation. Are you facing any struggles.. if yes, what are the struggles? and how you overcome them? There were many obstacles that were blocking my way, and I would be lying if I said that they’re all gone. This project as a whole is very challenging as the brand as a whole needs to speak for itself, and each individual festival needs to relate to the mother brand. At first, as a group, we had trouble creating a visual identity that was applicable for the brand and made sense in every aspect there was. Individually, I struggled with creating an identity for myself that I was actually satisfied with. I felt that due to the lack of time, everything was rushed. However, I’m trying to fix that by taking one thing at a time. What do you like/dislike about the project? I like that there’s more than one brain working, but I don’t like that there’s not enough time to explore our ideas more in depth. What is your role in the teamwork? I don’t have a certain role, but so far I came up with the concept for our festival, the name, the initial colour palette, and the favicon. #OPINION Typography (Font) One of the trends that caught my attention was Typography as a central figure. Meaning, designers mostly put their focus on the texts rather than the design itself , simplifying the design more and making it powerful and elegant. make the typography into a design by using a different font with an illustration onto it. What I think of this trend is that it’s very clever and it feels like a lot of designers would take this route in making their own design that only revolves around typography and I think it’s way to add more attention whether it’s a poster or a billboard and it would bring attention towards the viewers that are looking at it as well. Sometimes, I think that some designers usually prioritize the typography adding more depth and detail rather than the design and that their aim is to ensure that the people who would look at a design that the designers made instantly pay their attention to the typography before they look at the design to see the whole thing. On font type , It seems after decades of using sans serif fonts as if there were no serifs in town, designers are looking back at serifs as a way to infuse brands with charm and character. Serif designs offer unique visual opportunities that aren’t present in a lot of major corporate branding. Round and rustic sans serifs are coming back. Sans serif designs have been a popular choice for industries such as aerospace, information, medicine, and biotech for the past 60 years. Gradient (Color) Color is a very essential and important design tool. It plays a great role in triggering feelings, emotions , psychology and behavior. It reflects on the style and archetype, tone and much more. instrumental in evoking emotion, influencing behavior, conveying tone, defining style, and much more. Color trends are going back to the basics and simple elegant path as in typography. The trends we are seeing include everything from gentle, muted tones and simplistic color palettes to comforting retro hues and 90’s nostalgia, providing innovative yet familiar pallets with a modern twist. Personally I think gradient color elements in the designs add more depth and reliable qualities. The 2022 Pantone Color of the Year – PANTONE 17-3938 Veri Peri – is all about fluidity, innovation and change. A dreamy periwinkle blue with vibrant violet-red undertones, Very Peri emanates a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence to inspire imagination and creative expression. As the world begins emerging from an intense period of uncertainty and adjusting to the new normal, Very Peri is all about embracing the altered landscape, opening ourselves up to new possibilities, and redefining our futures. Everybody recognizes color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect. Pantone 17-3938 Veri Peri Geometric Shapes (Pattern) I think shapes and geometrical patterns in design make the design unique and smooth. It could come in many ways , angels , colors and shapes , the trend is for abstract patterns. Most designers in the past used geometrical shapes with packaging more than posters or visual designs. Geometric shapes and patterns emerge as a design trend for 2022 to add richness to designs. Designers will often use these shapes as backgrounds for their images and texts. This will give more fullness to their designs, and create space and hierarchy between the different elements that make up the visual. The geometrical pattern trend involves eye-catching and creative patterns inspired by geometric shapes. Shapes including lines , triangles, circles, squares can stand as symbols or form aesthetically attractive graphics. They may be used to break up a backdrop of solid colors and to give an aesthetic interest to it. However, in 2022, designers are using parametric geometry to bring statement patterns to the forefront. Lines in parametric patterns may change shape based on their location in relation to other lines. In contrast to the rigidity of architectural design, these patterns seem to be flowing and three-dimensional. To convey the complexity, ins-and-outs, confusion, involution, elaborateness, difficulty, and elaboration of their subject matter in the designs of 2022, parametric patterns are being utilized in combination with typography , retro designs and 3D dimensional graphics. It puts some of the old designs of the 60’s – 90’s back to life with a modern touch. Publishing I didn’t know much about publishing and book printing until I started doing this research and here is a summary of my findings . The growth of eBooks and digital marketplaces had already taken many readers into the digital age, and with self-publishing and hybrid publishing, much of the publishing process had increasingly moved into cyberspace as well, long before the pandemic. The publishing industry was better prepared than others to deal with its effects—and in some ways at least, that’s been true. These shifts tell us a few things about what to expect in 2022. Beyond the pandemic, other large-scale changes to the publishing industry are also still underway, and those shifts are expected to continue into 2022. Self-publishing authors are increasingly struggling to stand out in a crowded marketplace. New technologie like AI (Artificial Intelligence), machine learning, and cross-promotional marketing, as well as collaborative approaches and platform-building, are key trends for authors working to stand out. Don’t mistake this for the end of print books, which have been eclipsed by eBooks. Print sales remain key, and in fact, were higher in 2020 than during the same period of 2019. People are still reading in print, and now more than ever, they can get their hands on books without going to a bookstore. Audiobook sales will continue increasing, Ebooks will continue to grow in popularity. BookTok will become indispensable for marketing TikTok became the fastest-growing social media platform in 2021, and it is instrumental in branding and marketing. Authors and publishers alike latched on and began using this platform to grow their audiences and the BookTok was born and shows no signs of slowing down or going away. You can even find book reviewers on it. It is interesting to learn about the publishing industry and trends and will be following how it will shape in future. # S.M.A.R. T. PLAN #1 Plan: Improving software skills My short-term plan includes a very important goal which is improving Adobe suite skills, due to time constrains now, this plan has two folds, one is focused on learning and practicing the use of two software which would help me finish my assignment through reading help notes and watching several tutorial videos to understand how I could use most of the tools available. At the same time, I am creating many practicing files and folders, generating several 2D/3D effects, typography effects, color gradient and patterns. I do this practice on daily basis for an average of 2 hours a day and 4-5 hours on the weekend to learn as many tips as possible, tricks and discover new facts. The second fold of my plan is that I am going to have a proper intensive software course for at least half of the adobe suite or more in a professional institute in the summer and if time permit, I will finish them all. I will put everything I learn to practice on daily basis and will create projects on my own as assignment and get feedback on how could improve my drawing and designing complicated shapes. I will keep on creating practicing design in a separate file and keep them as my design assets for future. #2 Plan: Time managementIt is very important to me to have a small daily plan to go through my day, this plan is changing based on my day priorities. There is fixed time through any day though, which required for any daily routine such as sleep, meals, shower and so one and so forth. I use those as break time. Then the day I go to university, my focus is on priorities which will be to take care of the task in hand, get feedback on my work progress and take notes to work on later. I try to stay away from distractions and see how I progress against tasks I planned to finish for the day. There are few days I couldn’t finish some tasks (get stuck or need more research or feedback) so I delay them for a day off or weekend not to distract other tasks. My plan execution doesn’t always start as I planned – defer- but that is ok as I get the tasks done by the planned time or a little over it at the end of the day. I try to stay positive and motivated and If I get stuck or frustrated, I take a break and do something else to calm down and then resume my work again. I don’t like multitasking as it creates a lot of distraction and waste a lot of time even if it works sometimes. At the end of the day before going to bed, I check and review what I have planned against what has been achieved to see what to be included for later.
