What the difference is between the open enrollment period and special enrollment period with Covered California? Understanding all the different health care enrollment times can be confusing, but we are here to help! Open Enrollment The open enrollment period takes place each year in the fall and winter and it’s when anyone can enroll in health coverage and members can renew and make changes to their current coverage. Special Enrollment Special enrollment happens all year long and it’s for Californians who experience certain qualifying life events, like getting married, having a baby, or losing other health coverage. In 2022, you may be eligible to enroll in a Covered California plan at a reduced monthly cost if your expected income is, for example, about $19,320 as a single person or about $39,750 for a household of four at any time of the year. To view the other household sizes, look at the 150% Federal Poverty Level (FPL) column on this chart. Regardless of when you enroll, you may qualify for financial help to lower your monthly cost of health coverage. In the State of California, having health insurance for the entire year is the law. If you don’t have it, you may have to pay a penalty, unless you qualify for an exemption. If you paid a penalty on your 2021 taxes for not having health insurance, you may be able to enroll in a health plan for 2022 during special enrollment. Just use the qualifying life event “Paid the penalty for not having health insurance” when you complete your application.
