FIRE INFORMATION FOR RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

PROVIDING ACTIVE FIRE DATA FOR NEAR-REAL TIME MONITORING AND APPLICATIONS

The Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) distributes Near
Real-Time (NRT) active fire data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging
Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua and Terra satellites, and the Visible
Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard S-NPP, NOAA 20 and NOAA 21
(formally known as JPSS-1 and JPSS-2). Globally these data are available within
3 hours of satellite observation, but for the US and Canada active fire
detections are available in real-time.

The active fire / hotspot data can be viewed in FIRMS Fire Map or in NASA’s
Worldview , delivered as email alerts or downloaded in the following formats:
SHP, KML, TXT, WMS

FIRMS is part of NASA’s Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EO
(LANCE).

Fire Data Academy features examples of analyzing and visualizing fire data using
Google Colaboratory (Colab), Jupyter Notebooks, and Python.

ABOUT THE FIRE INFORMATION FOR RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

NASA FIRMS uses satellite observations from the MODIS and VIIRS instruments to
detect active fires and thermal anomalies and deliver this information in near
real-time to decision makers through email alerts, analysis ready data, online
maps and web services.

FIRMS was originally developed by the University of Maryland, with funds from
NASA’s Applied Sciences Program and the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization (UN FAO). It was transitioned to NASA LANCE in 2012.

FIRMS focus and objectives include:

 * Providing quality resources for fire data on demand
 * Working with end users to enhance critical applications
 * Assisting global organizations in fire analysis efforts
 * Delivering effective data presentation and management

WHAT'S NEW
 * Naming of satellites in FIRMS Attributes: To be consistent with the official
naming of satellites, the following attributes have been updated as follows:
N20 which refers to NOAA-20 (instead of 1 which referred to J1/NOAA-20); N21
which refers to NOAA-21 (and instead of 2 which referred to J2/NOAA-21).
 * NOAA-21 (JPSS-2) Fires and Thermal Anomalies are now available.
