A new film documenting the resilient and passionate Cairngorm snow community in
the Highlands of Scotland and their unmatched dedication to snowsports has been
released by Patagonia. In Scotland the word “thrawn” can mean “stubborn,” but it

FREERIDE WORLD TOUR OPENER SWITCHES FROM PYRENEES TO ALPS

The organizers of the Freeride World Tour have made a quick decision to organize
the opening competition of the season in Verbier this weekend. The tour had been
due to start in Spain’s Baqueira Beret but it had been announced that wouldn’t
be happening as a warm, dry first few months of the season in the Pyrenees means
there’s inadequate off piste snow for freeriding. Thanks to what they’re
describing as a “weather window” this coming weekend: January 27-28, 2024, the
FWT team is aiming to hold the competition on Verbier’s Bec des Rosses. The Alps

LATEST WORLDWIDE SNOW REPORT

UPDATED 23 JANUARY 2024 The world's deepest snow depth reached 5 metres in the
French Alps at the end of last week - quite unusual for Europe to be leading the
way with usually a ski centre in Japan or the western US topping the tables.
However, it reflects the fact that in a week of weather extremes, which included
torrential rain at some low-lying resorts in the Western Alps for nearly 48
hours at the end of last week, higher slopes only a short distance away were
getting abundant snowfall instead.....

Passy Plaine Joux ski resort:

“Skied at Passy Plaine Joux several times in January 2024. Lovely family
friendly and chilled resort. No chairlift (although did look like one was being
built).
All runs are accessed by fast drag lifts. Skied here twice mid week and had the
runs to ourselves. The pistes were well groomed and long runs for the size of
resort. Views of the Mont Blanc valley were amazing. Very reasonable lift pass
prices. Helpful and friendly lift staff. One mountain eatery and several at the
base, all good. Plenty of free parking. Skied once at the weekend and it was
much busier at the base but still the slopes were uncrowded. 30 minute drive up
from Sallanches or Passy. When the snow's good its great for a day or two and
perfect if learning to ski or for the intermediate skier who likes quiet. Very
popular with tourers.”

Cypress Mountain ski resort:

“My family purchased annual passes ($900 for family4) in March 2023 for the
winder season of 2024 to Cypress. Due to the continue rainy weather condition
this year, we haven't got a chance to use the pass even once yet. It is the end
of Jan of 2024 now. If the temperature keeps high as 6C-10C there isn't much
time left for people to ski on the mountain. I am wondering if Cypress can
transfer this year's pass or at least credit partial paid amount (say 30% or 50%
of paid mount) to the next season. It is obviously a huge loss. I don't think we
will invest annual family passes next year again.”

Gerlos ski resort:

“Small Austrian resort towns tick a lot of boxes for me, and when I came across
this one online, I was surprised I hadn't heard of it, since it has great
credentials. The reason is that it attracts lots of Dutch, but few Brits. This
is fine by me! Mayrhofen, in the next valley, is party central for the English,
but Gerlos has plenty of advantages. It's small and pretty, with lovely
traditional chalet architecture. There is a good selection of bars and
restaurants, and an abundance of 4* hotels. Best of all, the 2 lifts in the
village are within a 5 minute walk of nearly all the accommodation, and you can
ski right into the village centre as well.
As for the skiing, well it is rather good, especially for covering the miles as
intermediates. Gerlos is in the centre of the Zillertal ski area, and is fine.
The Zell sector really stands out though, with an extensive, fairly high
altitude section (2000-2500m ) and really lovely blues and reds through the
trees lower down. Konigsleiten, at the other end of the system is also
recommended. The setting of this purpose built little village, which seems to
consist almost entirely of chalets, is lovely indeed. Situated at the top of a
pass, this resort feels quite high and remote, and looks to be pretty much all
ski in-ski out.

Overall, there are very few black runs, and the one or two we did find we felt
were little different from the reds, so it is not the place for expert thrill
seekers. Having said that, the quantity of off-piste and its easy accessibility
right by the side of the pistes, is a big plus.

The mountain restaurants and very plentiful and very good.

Other pluses: very short transfer (70 minutes from Innsbruck, we got a rare ski
session on the first afternoon), significantly lower prices than France (30%
less here for hotel, food, drink) and better mountain food. There is a better
resort atmosphere as well, and it is good to feel like you are a person, not
just a digit in a constantly churning mega ski factory. And the views are
glorious in every direction.”
