LIST OF ALL OUTPUT FORMATS

CaptionSync produces a wide variety of output file formats to support captioning
for broadcasts, DVDs, videotape, web players, video-sharing sites, and podcasts.

At the end of this article you can find media samples that you can use with
these outputs. Please open a Support Ticket to request specific samples of these
caption files.

If you're looking for encoded captions/subtitles, where the caption file is

Following is a list of the various output file extensions and what they are
typically used for:

  TRANSCRIPTS AND SUPPORT FILES

  .CLEAN.TXT Clean text transcript without any timing information, formatted
with blank lines between speaker changes.   .CLEAN.PDF Clean text transcript in
the .pdf format, without any timing information, formatted with blank lines
between speaker changes.   .CLEAN.DOCX Clean text transcript in the .docx
format, without any timing information, formatted with blank lines between
speaker changes.   .TXT Raw text transcript without any timing information but
may contain sync markers (used for redos).   .ID A simple XML file noting the
original AST ID pertaining to the submission (only present for AST-Link
submissions which are not Batched)


  PRODUCTION TRANSCRIPT FILES

  .PROD.TXT A time-stamped text transcript, with a timestamp at every speaker
change and periodically within each speaker’s monolog. NOTE: This format can
also be requested as a Captioning output, in which case timestamps will be
placed at a fixed frequency of 60 seconds.


  WEB RESULT TYPES

  .ADB.XML DFXP timed text for Flash (uses dur syntax). Also used for Panopto
Lecture Capture systems. See .DFXP.XML below for DFXP timed text with begin/end
syntax.   .ASS Advanced SubStation Alpha format. This caption file is used by a
wide variety of software packages -- particularly open-source and freeware
packages. Examples include: iSubtitle, Handbrake, DivX, PS3, VLC, and MPlayer.  
.VTT WebVTT format for HTML5 video. The syntax for the align: tag is A:middle.  
.2014.VTT WebVTT format for HTML5 video. The syntax for the align: tag is
align:middle.   .noalign.VTT WebVTT format for HTML5 video. This format does not
store alignment information.   .SRT Captions for YouTube, older JW FLV Player or
for DVD subtitles longer than 32 characters per line   .QT.XML QuickTime TeXML
subtitles. These are like QT.TXT (see below) but have a more modern UTF-8
character set support.   .QT.TXT Text track captions for QuickTime video or
audio (.MOV, .MP3, .M4A, .M4V, .MP4, .WAV, …). See QT.XML above for more modern
character set support.   .QT.SMIL + SMIL pointer file to tell the QuickTime
player how to play the QuickTime text track captions with the QuickTime video or
audio   .SMI SAMI captions for Windows Media video or audio (.WMV, .WMA, .ASF,
.MP3, .WAV, …). Also used for Camtasia and other systems.   .ASX + ASX pointer
file to tell the Windows Media player how to play the SAMI text captions with
the Windows Media video or audio   .WMP.TXT   Captions for embedding into
Windows Media video (.WMV)   .RT RealText captions for RealMedia video or audio
(.RM, .RA, .MP3, .WAV, …)   .RT.SMIL + SMIL pointer file to tell the RealPlayer
how to play the RealText captions with the RealMedia video or audio   .DFXP.XML
DFXP timed text for Flash with begin/end tags. See .ADB.XML above for DFXP timed
text with dur syntax. Compliant with the TTML specifications.   .SMPTETT.XML The
SMPTE-TT file is the FCC standard for internet captioning. It's derived from the
DFXP format, but contains some extra fields to support the broadcast industry.
It is also sometimes called TTML, SMPTE-TTML, or SMPTE-2052. This format
supports a "708" style captions, being suitable for broadcasters looking for 708
captions or HD captions. It also supports vertical and horizontal positioning,
so it is suitable for all FCC requirements. There is an increasing number of
applications accepting the SMPTE-TT format, like Adobe Premiere.   .LRC   MP3
Lyric file   .APRESO.XML XML captions for Apreso and Echo360 Lecture Capture
systems   .PPT.XML   Captions for the STAMP plugin for Powerpoint   .TEGRITY.TXT
Captions for Tegrity Lecture Capture systems (prior to the Summer 2013 release)
  .BC.XML   DFXP captions for Brightcove Video   .ENSEMBLE.XML   DFXP captions
for Ensemble Video   .CUE.XML   Adobe Cuepoint file   .GPAC.TTXT   Caption file
format used by mp4box   .CPT.XML   XML captions for Captionate to encode into
Flash video   .QTWRD.TXT QuickTime word level text track captions for QuickTime
video or audio (.MOV, .MP3, .M4A, .M4V, .MP4, .WAV, …). Words highlighted as
spoken.   .QTWRD.SMIL + SMIL pointer file to tell the QuickTime player how to
play the QuickTime word level text track captions with the QuickTime video or
audio   .QTWRDRVL.TXT QuickTime word level text track captions for QuickTime
video or audio (.MOV, .MP3, .M4A, .M4V, .MP4, .WAV, …). Words revealed as
